  1. clear coats shrink over time. I use epoxy to grain fill my guitars. I had this exact problem when I was finishing my bass. What's happening is that the finish is curing, and getting thinner as it cures, as the vapors leave the finish. care, patients, lots of coats, lots of level sanding, and lots more coats are the way to do it if you don't want to grainfill.
  2. Art & Luthier makes some amazing instruments for under 600. I bought mine from some chick for 60 dollars. It was pretty grimy and dirty lookin, so I cleaned it up good, changed the strings, and now this thing sounds better than any other guitar I've picked up in any of the shops I've been to. I call it my "slut guitar" because of the previous owner.
  3. is that a strat style jack on the lower horn facing upward? Does that work out well as far as accessability goes for the cord?
  4. 1. caulking can be used to keep the truss rod in place, and prevent it from rattling inside the neck during play; a problem that my Carvin necks have. 2. Titebond is fine for attaching fretboards. So is epoxy. 3. spokeshave, & calipers... however I have no experience with this so I would recommend anyone else's advice.
  5. lol, I saw that too. I hate Jack White even more now To me, it was like The Edge: (commentary about noise vs sound, and getting the instrument to speak the sound that's in your head) Page: (commentary about making the instrument talk, and finding its voice and how to bond with it properly) White: (i made a guitar out of a shoe, because it was hard to make it sound good... mini-me) I suppose White has an interesting point of view, as he tries to get his inspiration by making his instruments more difficult to play with... I mean, as a person who can't create anything, I gotta give him credit for being able to do what he does with what he limits himself to. But lets be real here, out of those 3 musicians, which one could be replaced by someone far more interesting? How many people do you know of who have been influenced by Jack White?
  6. Somewhere in this pile, there's a top that's being glued together. Ever think you have too many clamps, and then you do something like this and think "Why don't I have more clamps!?"
  7. Don't you hate when you try to get into a band and actually sit and listen to all their albums over and over again because you think it might be an aquired taste, and then after the 5th or 6th time on each one, you start to go "God Damnit, why am I listening to this?" *eject/put in the good stuff* Well that's how I feel about Rush And Slayer's last two albums. And The Beatles. And The Offspring. And Metallica's Load/Reload CDs. And System of a Down. And Korn without Head. And U2. And The White Stripes. etc.
  8. If you have the bridge in hand, a set of calipers, and some basic algebra under your belt, you should be able to easily figure out everything you need to know about routing for the thing. If we just hand you all the answers, you won't learn anything.
  9. The red on that guitar is messing with my colorblindness, and its bleeding into your grass, making your grass have a red hue. Its kinda trippy to look at
  10. That could be! The other part is that I think I talk too much in my build threads
  11. That's walnut? Cool. I found it in this guy's scrap wood collection. He lets me pick through and take whatever I want.
  12. There's no slide place mats that you can pick up at hardware stores or fabric places. They look like mesh thats made of rubber. You can also get no slip carpet pads, which are the same thing only white and bigger.
  13. Got all the woods picked out! I picked up a cocobolo fretboard today.
  14. This is more of an idea that came to me while I was at work. I won't be explaining much in it, as most of you know the drill. The idea I'm working with will probably make some people say "meh..." but I've never seen it done, and I want to do it. This is my experimental inexpensive build. Cherry = $10
  15. I agree with the Jeff Beck comment. *shrug* I don't like rush. The End.
  16. if you get one of those rings that goes around the switch that says "trebel/lead" or whatever on it, that'll cover up most of the damage. If you use a drill press to make the initial hole, and a good sharp bit, that'll help too... however, I don't understand how you're going to get the switch to fit in the hole without a control cavity in the back of the guitar...
  17. There's several ways to do it. Show us your guitar. Right now, we can't come up with a solution, as we don't know what kind of finish your guitar has. A painted finish will be easier to work with than a transparent finish in this case... because you know, paint is paint, and clearcoat can be more difficult than most women. We also don't know exactly where you want the switch. Do you want it on the top of the guitar where a standard LP has it, or on the side near the strap pins?
