  1. I like the PRS headstock. I built a bass from a kit and I made the headstock look like the PRS before I ever saw a PRS
  2. no rule. the magnet field of the pickups shouldn't be altered by a cover of any kind. As long as the cover doesn't interfere with the strings you're fine. (the only thing that should effect the magnetic field are other magnets).
  3. that's freakin' awesome. My next project is going to be an electric cello. I didn't even know there was such a thing as a mandocello
  4. you could recess the TOM and run the strings through the top to the back. It would probably mean refinishing if you want to get rid of the holes of the tail piece.
  5. When I was researching for my current guitar project I was intent on putting a FR on it. I have only seen one FR bridge on ebay that was specially made to be mounted without routing to an LP. It was $500 for the bridge only and it wasn't even new. FRs are really complicated. I wouldn't mess up a LP to mount one if you don't know what you're doing. If you are intent on a trem for the LP, get a Bigsby and get a really good roller bridge or special saddles for the existing bridge and install a self lubing nut and locking tuners. If you're careful and set it up perfectly, you should be able to use the trem pretty hard.
  6. I would recommend basswood with a maple top. I've seen a lot of metal-head guitars and basses built from basswood. It is light, cheap and easy to finish. It also has excellent sustain and tone for a light wood. (so it won't break your back while you melt faces!!!)
  7. I'd be willing to say that any void free, high quality plywood will make a fine guitar. I built an acoustic kit and it has plywood made from basswood. The top is solid spruce though. That said, the wood will affect an acoustic a great deal more than an electric.
  8. Oil is definitely a good finish. I have finished many things other than guitars with Tung oil and I always use it on guitar necks because it won't wear off. And it is almost impossible to screw up.
