  1. New jigsaw blades... Done done. Ok, enough of being lazy. I need to make an 18mm thick MDF template, this 6mm one is just asking for tear-out. But anyways, its time for a beer!
  2. Its gotta be the mirrored iceman for me. But it won by an inch over ALL the others - theres not a guitar here I wouldnt aspire to own or build.
  3. I'd rear-rout it, because then at least if you want to, you can buy long-shaft pots and use a pickguard - you're not restricting yourself to anything. But I'd still go for the pickguard, I think an entirely blue-stained ash body would look a little monotonous without a burst of any kind.
  4. How much would it cost to send a single bridge humbucker to UK? Just out of interest, my money's mostly going to a bass right now, but I'm interested to know...
  5. Awesome. Out of interest, how far dyou reckon that much wood will go? It'd be more than three, but I'm wondering how many guitars you could get out of it...
  6. Guitarnut, perhaps its a different scale length? I personally like it as is, without the burst. But a burst would definately look cool as well.
  7. Ok. Thanks for clearing that up for me. I'll continue my build with the iroko I have, but I'm still on the lookout for ovangkol... It looks nicer, anyways
  8. Its a bolt-on neck join, the bass is chambered with f-holes. Maple center and back are 1" thick, ash top is 1/2" thick. I know the back isnt going to have direct contact with the vibrating strings, but I was under the impression that it would help determine how the body resonates acoustically.
  9. Aye, my bad. I'm using it for the back of a bass guitar, the center is maple, top is ash, and fingerboard is wenge. I'm after something to bring the warm low-end back to the mix.
  10. Hey there, I'm on the hunt for Ovangkol (aka Shedua, hyedua, and others). Cant find it anywhere in the UK, although I'm sure I'm just not looking in the right places. I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction? I've contacted a few timber suppliers, nobody seems to have any. I'm after a 6"x1"x3ft board, preferably planed. Also, in case theres no chance of finding any ovangkol in the next few weeks, could anyone suggest an alternative? I've heard its a "cheap man's rosewood", which considering I'm not looking to spend lots of money, seems about right. I've considered walnut and sapele, but I'm not sure I'm gonna get the sound I'm after. Cheers for any help!
  11. An AMP does, a CABINET doesnt... a cabinet is just speakers in a box (speaking very generally).

  13. I know this gets said a lot around here... But drawing it out can be very helpful! Mark out where the bridge and nut are gonna go, then how many frets you're gonna have, and the point where the neck ends should come naturally. Then add your body shape, headstock, etc... Suddenly you got a big full-size drawing you can directly refer to while building. Very useful.
  14. Which titebond did you use? Two and Three are watertight, if I remember correctly, whilst One isnt, and I think thats the one everyone uses. Personally I use PVA as well, though.
  15. Yeah, adding a veneer might be the best option. I imagine the tuners would be more stable with wood around them than some wobbly washers. I always reckon if you make a mistake, its often easy to make a feature of it. For instance, why not take three .6mm veneers, and dye the middle one black? Laminate them together, glue them onto the face of the headstock, then put an ever so slight chamfer on the edges to give you a white-black-white binding sorta look?
  16. I like this bit of ash I thought I'd found a supplier for some Ovangkol, but it turns out they dont have any, and wont for some time. I'm still on the hunt for some, but I'm starting to look for alternative "warm"-sounding woods. I'm thinking Walnut...
  17. Fair do's... I gotta say, the more I look at that finish, the more I want to finish a guitar in Hammerite paint
  18. Looks pretty cool, I love the finish. I probably would've gone with pickup mounting rings, though. Why the locking nut with a strat-style trem? Pre-used neck, or are you planning to upgrade to a different trem sometime?
  19. If you're planning on re-fretting, it might be easier to buy a new fretboard. But if you're set on fixing this one, you can open the cracks a little, get some glue in there, then clamp it tight closed and leave it to dry. Only problem is that hammering in frets might cause the cracks to open up again.
  20. Also, where are you, geographically speaking? It'd make no sense mailing a fretboard over the Atlantic ocean for something like that - but if someone lives half an hour's drive away, they might be tempted. I agree with supplebanana though - it'd be much better for you to try it yourself. Dont worry about breaking it! If you're worried about the price of replacing a broken fretboard, you'd probably still have to pay for someone else to do the job for you. Only thing you'll gain from having a go is experience, which is worth a lot more than money is
  21. I never have the money to order all the parts in one go! Pay day is friday, so a new batch of parts arrives at my house usually on mondays or tuesdays I think its looking great, though. Are you gonna put a roundover on those edges? I know the RG-esque shape begs crisp lines, but I'd be afraid of dropping it and lopping my foot off...
  22. £9 each, including knobs, not bad! Cheers for the heads up
  23. Hey, I'm having trouble finding concentric (stacked) pots for sale... Or at least, for sale at less than about £20 apiece. I'm going for a 3-band EQ, two volumes, and a gain control for my bass project, so three concentric pots would do the job nicely - but I dont really want to drop that much money on some freaking pots. Cheers!
