  1. If I'm not mistaken, the negative on the 9V IS the ground. Otherwise you'd ground to a chassis I assume. Although that doesn't make much sense so someone else should clarify.
  2. I'll try to answer a couple of these (even though I have less than 1% of an hour of background in electronics). 2. I'd assume that the base is gate, collector is drain, and emitter is source. 3. 9v- goes to the ground point on the PCB and all commons go to that point. Grain of salt, all that stuff, I'm probably wrong, but this whole thing is helping me learn too, so guesses are fun!
  3. And if you ever get bored of it you could always convert it for use in a sustainer project I didn't get a chance to pick up the components last night but plan on doing it tonight. From the looks of it, this would be about the size of an older preamp, am I right about that? And to recap on the basic concept of a sustainer, the idea is to create a field (be it magnetic or otherwise) that keeps a string in motion, in motion. Is that basically correct? I don't know if I like the idea of having a huge cavity in my guitar, but I definitely like the idea of a sustainer.
  4. Thanks for that Ruby link. I'll be building that tonight!
  5. You should see the massive thread dedicated to yelling at software thieves on homerecording.org. It's insane.
  6. Wow, that purpleheart really balances everything out perfectly. Very very nicely done.
  7. Though it's a bit pricey, Cubase SX is what I've been using for years. It's a workhorse, versatile, stable, everything I need from a piece of recording software. I used to use Samplitude and it was pretty good.
  8. I officially deem this thread comedy gold. I do not like Zach's guitars or his business model (the "I am the best so I will talk trash about manufacturers who are doing better than me because that assuredly means I am the best" method). I also despise his mentality that some people don't "deserve" his guitars. Hell, if he deserves them, then anyone does. However, I do appreciate that he enjoys what he does (or at least seems like it) and doesn't let trash talkers stop him (although it's obvious he takes it all wayyyy too seriously and personal). That said, shouldn't he have made a much better video where he plays halfway decent and doesn't break a string? That is the most illogical thing about this whole mess. Anyway, thanks for giving me a good laugh today.
  9. I thought that grounding was really more of a safety precaution. I once played through a guitar that wasn't grounded, in a poorly wired room, and got zapped by my amp a couple of times. Decided to ground it and it never happened again. I'd go with a metal retainer ferrule-type thing for the back and ground it from there. Anyway, this looks like a really cool idea and has inspired me to start working on a wooden bridge design for my next guitar build. I hope this works out for you!
  10. Valley of the Damned was an incredible album. Their new stuff is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy over-produced and has tons of overly cheesy electronics stuff (it's hard for Dragonforce to be overly cheesy, but they pulled it off!). But yeah, they are pretty incredible for sure.
  11. Wow, I just started on designing a project exactly like this. It looks really good. I'm still pretty new to different scale lengths, but doesn't 24-3/4" need to be compensated with the bridge position? Or am I missing something in that? Anyway, looks like you've got a really nice build here. I'm excited to see it completed.
  12. Is it just me or are the tuner holes a bit far down? Otherwise, looks very good so far.
  13. I have a bit that's long enough to go from the neck to the bridge, and the control cavity to the bridge.
  14. I am starting to get near half-completion on the body. I glued the top on and sanded it level today. The glue residue looked gone so I decided to apply a first coat of stain. Looks like it wasn't gone, so tomorrow I'll be sanding it back, cleaning up the f-hole (I'm going for a smaller/a bit more modern + classic design and really need to make it less sloppy), and fixing a few other areas. This is starting to look like a guitar! Edit: Oh yeah, I'm going to drill the pickup wire channels in, so that's why the bridge humbucker isn't routed yet. Just thought I'd let you know.
  15. I saw Napalm Death and Kreator the other night. It reminded me why I love the genre so much. Oh yeah, and switch Taking Back Sunday and Senses Fail to emocore. Those bands are not emo by any means. You should add in metalcore and switch Norma Jean and Zao to that. Probably Converge too. Original hardcore bands were basically a faster, louder, and angrier version of punk. Oh yeah, and you're welcome for disregarding your first post. If you're going to have a discussion about genres then it's only fair to tell you where you're getting them wrong.
  16. Those are some nice pieces of mahogany you've got there. That sucks about the blank not being planed. I just got a maple blank that was unplaned and unjointed. Lazy eBayers. I'll be watching this one!
  17. Update: Almost to the point of shaping on the neck. Right now still cleaning up the truss rod channel, have to make the adjustment recess, tomorrow am going to cut it to near-depth and get the taper cut. Also got a nice maple top whose joint is drying right now. This is going to be a flat top. I'm not going to put the switch on the upper section like most LPs, because I always hit it when I get into the music. Also am going to do a semi-semi-hollow body (really just the back section of the upper half of the bell. Hard to explain without showing, so I'll route it tomorrow and have some pictures too). Slowly but surely this will get done.
  18. Using a scale isn't ripping someone off. Using a note-for-note section of one of their solos is. I doubt that you've never heard Necrophagist.
  19. It sure says something about your "writing" style that right within the first three seconds you're downright plagiarizing a Necrophagist solo. Way to go!
  20. I like the general design of the bass. However, I think that the upper horn needs some more work in its aesthetic, and the lower horn needs to flow a bit better in the center (round it a bit deeper in and it would probably look a lot better. The headstock looks a bit weird to me. But if you like the design and it plays well, then more power to you!
  21. Man, I've always wanted to build an amp. Congrats.
  22. Definitely some nice grain patterns there. It's like a cup of coffee.
  23. I really appreciate the info that you've given me on this. I'm going to pick up this book to start getting a little more serious about this kind of stuff. Thanks again.
  24. Well, I've got a Line 6 Flextone II HD. I used the cab's new setup last night at band practice and there was a hugeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee difference. My other guitarist was a little confused at how my amp was so much louder than his. I'd say that the volume increase is at least double, and the tone improvement is leaps and bounds beyond what I expected. As soon as I can afford it, I plan on going with a quality tube amp. But for now, I'm running the Rocket 50s in that cab at 8 ohms. I'm working on a cab that's going to house two of the 16 ohm speakers I took out. Wired in parallel, that would give me an 8 ohm load. And then daisy chaining these cabs, I would have a 4 ohm load, right?
