  1. i disagree on the 'swap it out for a good one' theory. I'd much rather see the 'learning' happen on a cheap Ibanez. after all..... - even the Jem is a basswood body. So the 1800 dollar guitars are made of the same wood as the 300 dollar ones. difference must be the hardware. / My opinion.
  2. I think you did great for the tools you are using. Very neat design too. Don't give up yet- find what frustrated you here on this build and recognize the things you need to improve. Router control is a learned process, patience and shallow passes are the keys. I don't use templates for anything , and the earlier stuff definitely had worse looking routs !! I think what I'm getting at is this : Templates don't equal perfection. I've seen numerous horror stories on here about templates slipping, bearings drifting/ breaking/ tearout, etc. Just refining your weaknesses will make you a better builder, a task I am still working on myself. I think its a great guitar you've made here. Keep at it and youll really knock em out.
  3. Hmmm. I can't say for sure, but that sounds *sounds* safest. Can you use two strings to line up its position better? The high and low E strung up, or even thread/twine will give you solid lines to follow. See which holes line up, and go from there. Double-check your nut-to-saddle measurement while you're there too, just to be on the safe side.
  4. I for one LOVE the knotwork !! I sport some knotwork on my skin, so I'm partial to it. Fill in the low spots with black epoxy and you'll have amazing detail to the carve. Great job, very unique !!!!
  5. That shade is great. I dressed it with my eyes and its going to look amazing! The inlays are looking mighty nice too. When I built that sorta-can-opener looking one, I thinned out the body where the tuners came thru . Down to headstock-thickness. It allowed me to use regular tuners with no issues. I know you have the Steinberger tuners already, just a thought for future reference. Lookin forward to the glorious Corvus you finish .
  6. [tone voodoo] I hear that Cherry is very trebly alone. [/tone voodoo] I have always used it in tandem with other types of wood in my builds, but I don't build too many. I've only used it few times. Saying "cherry" though,,, what TYPE of cherry is it? There are hundreds of varieties of cherry trees.
  7. I agree with Wez- padauk has a great tone. In fact, I think adding a 'toneblock' to padauk would be like adding a nitrous kit to a missle. You could do it, but I don't think it would do a whole lot. Cherry, on the other hand, could definitely benefit from chambering as well as a 'toneblock' of some sort. Anything that might add bass frequencies to the acoustic quality of the build would be good.
  8. seems to me the string spacing on the bridge is just a bit too wide. You could take the saddles off, remove a hair from each side of the G, B and E saddles ( only the inside of the E saddle ) and that would allow you to keep the 'notches' where they are, yet get them in a slightly tighter group. its a bit extreme, but it'll work.
  9. I'd have to make one... I put one in this: http://projectguitar.ibforums.com/index.php?showtopic=44630&view=findpost&p=484879 the benefits of the active part is boost. you can "add" in mid, bass and treble frequencies right on board. Easy to dial the mids out and get a great acoustic tone real quick. They are not cheap though. http://www.carvinguitars.com/products/single.php?product=501B&cid=62
  10. nothing at all, its a song that I like... it was supposed to make SENSE ?!?
  11. none of which matters since there aint no saguaro's in texas.
  12. not a wiring mod, but the "passive/active" module from carvin is amazing. pickup panning and 3 bands of cut/boost. makes for some pretty versatile tonal options.
  13. something the color of the binding would help. shame to cover up all the grain......
  14. thanks..its not markers..its normal spray job with mineral suspended in water....the mineral then is sprayed with oxides..and then finished....mat in my case, with wax I saw this " Sculpt Nouveaou patinas " in the line up there and thought it said "Script nouveaou patinas" .... Script is a Marker company here in the U.S. ..... too funny. I though you were the master of markers for a minute. Your friends guitar in the link is beautiful. All of his builds look amazing ! . Nice work on the finish here too. I like it. Markers or not.
  15. I really like it. I'm doing up a pine guitar right now and some spruce ones. never tried a pine bass, but i bet it'll sound sweet .
  16. I love the way it looks correct, only small. Great work.
  17. the black makes it look beautiful even more than before! I want it......
  18. a hinged neck. Sweet. I'm doing one on a box-guitar right now. The paintjob with markers looks good.
  19. Don't beleive my voodoo but here's my thoughts on neck carving..... * I think * that using a sander creates hot patches in the neck blank/ intruduces heat into the neck blank which can(possibly in my mind ) cause the neck blank to move . I try to carve each neck down by hand, but I've done one or two with sanders. One with a belt sander and one with a flapp-disk on a big grinder. I prefer using blades to acheive my neck profiles though. Thats just my opinion though , I have no facts or documents to back it up. Oh, and that headstock looks great.
  20. Thats just all kinds of fun, aint it ?!? I like the sun rays with the little flares along the edge too. Usually see one or the other, kinda neat how you combined the two. I'd pinch it back after a couple of months and polish it up better, but thats just me. Awesome re-fin .
  21. Well then ! I love it. So glad to see the pups in such a great looking guitar. But wait... you're on the opposite side of the world, are they reverse polarity down there ? Just funnin.. Excellent looking build Chad. You really outdid yerself this time.
