  1. I think it's 19 something...right around 20 bucks
  2. How easy is that stuff to get smooth? Sounds like a pretty good idea, but I'm having a hard time seeing how to apply it evenly. Devon
  3. What drawknife would you suggest? What do you use the X-acto blades for? What are the best tools to carve a top? Thanks, Devon
  4. I think my mom used to use that stuff for drawing paintings to scale. Does it have grid on it, or is it just clear and you look at the grid underneath? I drew my plans 1:4 last night and today. Gotta smooth some curves a little more on the full size one. Is it possible to use regular 1/4" square grid paper just taped up to the size you need? I can't make it out of the house for a few days with this snow, and I'd like to get something done. Thanks, Devon
  5. I've heard it was good. I'm just about to place the order for mine now. In the cart and everything . I'd like to know about this too. I'm a little dissapointed that you have to buy their bit to install it though. I can't find that size anywhere else. Devon
  6. Purpleheart isn't all that expensive...it's actually really cheap next ot other exotics. I bought mine from this guy but I got it from eBay. Good guy to deal with, haven't really checked out his site though. I do know that he kiln dries all of his wood. My purpleheart has a bit a a twist though, but overall I'm satisfied. Enjoy Devon
  7. That sounds like a very good idea. It will already have the hardware, and a figured maple veneer. The only problem is that it is already routed for humbuckers so you'd have to have them. Also, you said hollowbody, so I guess that's out...maybe I should've thought a little more before I posted that
  8. In the Melvyn Hiscock book he built the carved top guitar out of poplar. He said it is light, sounds good (which I find a little hard to believe), and is easy to work with. Anybody here ever tried it and have an opinion?
  9. That it will...The top is gonna be only about 3/4" thick (gotta plane some twist out of the 1" board), but the neck is gonna be about 1 3/4" and go through the whole body. I started drawing up plans last night. This think is really gonna look good I think
  10. What are the hand tools you've learned to love, what do you use them for, and where can you get them? Devon
  11. Maple it is. Ordering it now. Just a tip, looking for veneers, the cheapest place I have found them is www.rockler.com . Good prices over there . Devon
  12. I don't think I could bring myself to shoot a guitar
  13. Did anyone see Dan's offer? WOW! When I hear those words I'll know I have arrived.
  14. I'm trying to come up with a good veneer to contrast with purpleheart for my guitar. It's gonna be a 3 piece purpleheart laminate with veneer in between to contrast, then possibly more veneer (opposite shade of what's on the neck possibly), with purpleheart wings/mahongany back. The fretboard will be bocote. Anyway, my question is: should I use light (maple) or dark (walnut) veneer on the neck? Also, should I use the opposite or the same wood veneer before the wings? Thanks, Devon
  15. I wouldn't mind a copy either. signs_of_life@hotmail.com Thanks, Devon
  16. Thanks guys...I'll look into the TurboCAD thing, but I don't exactly wanna have to learn how to use a program on the computer to build my first guitar, so I think I'll just start drawing out the plans now. I was lookiing in the Melvyn Hiscock book last night, and he draws pretty much everything out full scale, so that's probably the route I'll take. Lex, How do you make a template like you're talking about? Is it MDF the shape of the body (so you can trace onto the wood), with the pickup/neck cavities in it for routing templates? Thanks again you guys. Devon
  17. Printing isn't the part I'm trying to figure out as much as learning what program to use to draw it, and how to draw it. Any alternatives to working it out on a computer. Obviously there must be, because they weren't always around :rolleyes Devon
  18. I'm soon gonna be starting a guitar, and I've heard many of you say that I need to draw it out in CAD to work out neck angle, and other flaws before I start building. I also wanna draw the right body style/headstock shape and print it 1:1. What program(s) do I need, how much do they cost, and how do I go about doing what I need to do? Thanks, Devon
  19. What about Bondo? I think Bondo comes in green doesn't it? Would it be compatible with the finish?
  20. Drop that thing and it's dead . It kinda ticked me off when he threw that Tele on the floor
  21. It's probably most of the above...if you are to the point of playing (well) John Mayer stuff, then you're probably not gonna quit, so I say just get a nice guitar. Not just for the buzzes, but for the tone. Devon
