  1. That's nice.. what kinda paint did you use nitro?
  2. Back when I used to practice 8 to 10 hours a day.. I had this same problem and had pain in my wrist real bad.. but I read some information and started doing stretching exersices with my hand(wrist)... But I can tell you this much.. Later on I got into working out.. and I'll tell you.. Weight Lifting helps you out alot... doesn't make sense.. but I don't have any problems and I can play as much as I like... I guess that when you are lifting the weights you are building up your wrist muscle all the time.. since that's what supports the weights.... just my thoughts on the matter.. I'm not saying to lift weights now.. but it's something you might want to try if everything else fails... Matt
  3. One more question since we are on this subject.. I know this was a refret job.. but if you was making a neck from scratch.. do you use a jig that has the blade to cut the fret slots.. I'm thinking about buying one.. but was wondering because it cuts straight across.. what's the best way to slot the fret slots radius wise..? You just use a small saw and cut until it's radiused with the business card line?
  4. very informative... did you not have to oilstone the frets? or does using that business card trick keep you from getting the frets unlevel? Just curious about that..
  5. lol... I was just looking at Harmony Central at the reviews some of Ed Roman guitars are getting.. most are good ratings on the guitar.. but he's not doing good because of the customer support part.. which most rated under 3... lol.. guess Ed is a hot head... it was funny reading some of those post.. P.S. No offense to anyone.. I don't even know Ed.. but just reporting what I've heard..
  6. hehe.. yeah I know but it's the only thing I could find out with Nitro vs Poly.. lol.. I'm with ya LGM.. Poly is the best it just cost alot more.. $$$$$$ lol
  7. Welcome Rob!!! Hope you learn as much as I have on this forum.. it's great!
  8. You might want to read this link.. it has some very interesting things on this subject. http://www.edromanguitars.com/tech/polyvsnitro.htm Nitro is good but comes with alot more headaches.. for example.. Nitro does dry faster between coats(also known as flash time). Takes around 5 minutes in the right conditions, and poly takes 30 to 40 before next coat can be applied. But where Poly really shines is the amount of time till polish.. which in most cases is 10 hours air dry time... instead of having to wait 3 weeks for nitrocellose to cure... but also Poly is even more dangerous so, make sure for good ventilation and use a good respirator, but you need that for spraying nitro as we'll.... Also I can understand why they deal with nitro.. it's because you can add your own colors to the clear easier. But from now on I'm a believer in PolyUrethane.. It's hard as a rock.. and looks awesome.. but then again nitro isn't bad to start off with.. it's just when you get frustrated that you'll be looking for poly.. lol.. My current choice is Nason Select Clear for the clear coat simply because it's really good paint for a better price.. just shop around for prices though it's still expensive.. PGP also makes good paint.. Good Luck on your paint job... Matt
  9. They don't call Brian "Information Junkie" for nothing!!! lol.. good job on the tutorials.. My IQ has went up in the last week..
  10. Welcome to the world of aerosol cans.. lol.. It can be challenging but done right it can result in a very good finish, just takes more effort. Here is some paints I've used with success from Plasti-Kote.. First off you'll need a good primer to help cover all the imperfections in the wood.. You'll need to apply about 3 to 4 coats for good measure. http://www.plastikote.com/plastikote/auto/...=SandablePrimer Then the colors.. apply 4 to 6 coats simply because it's from a aerosol can and they don't spray as thick... they are 6oz cans that spray really good, for some reason they spray better than the 12oz cans.. these are acrylic lacquer based.. look for CarColor on the label when you go to buy!! http://www.plastikote.com/plastikote/auto/...ct=carcolor&t=1 Then the clear coat to get the ultra glossy look.. 10 coats should be enough. maybe more remember your working with thin coats here.. instead of a hvlp gun.. or conventional gun.. in this case you'll get the same CarColor with ClearCoat.... If I remember right it's #629.. Then you must wait at least a week for it to cure some before reading LGM's post on polishing!!! Good Luck Matt
  11. Once again Brian comes through!!! good article Setch..
  12. very cool link RCG.. thanks!! I got alot of tuners but this would be killer for recording on my computer.. I could check the tuning without having to unplug from my Delta1010 soundcard.. and stay in the Nuendo environment.. I'm gonna test run it later today.. lol
  13. If you don't mind send the plans my way also docroland@yahoo.com I'm here to learn myself..!!! lol
  14. To get a great finish to start with.. your gonna want to paint in a pretty good area where your tempature ranges from 70 to 75 deg F and with humidity somewhere around 30%.. But having said that, my first paint job was done outside.. I took an outdoor swing down and used a wire to hold the guitar up to the top post.. I had orange peel to some extent.. but then again that's to be expected with aerosol cans.. but the humidity and temperature wasn't helping at all.. The main thing to remember is to sand alot between coats to keep the paint going on level. Something I didn't do so good on the first time around.. The next guitar I painted was in a controlled 72 deg F and low humidity room.. I still used aerosol cans but the results was much more pleasing.. the only problems I had was with one can of aerosol had a bad spray nozzle and messed it up to some extent.. so I swore off aerosol lacquer in search of a better way.. you might want to read the link started by me called "Tips From Dupont" to fully understand what I learned... Basically I'm going to use Nason Select Clear now for my clear coating needs... Good Luck on your project.. just remember that if you do paint in bad conditions, you'll have to sand more than you would if you didn't.. dirt dust, humidity, high temp... all work against you... Matt Vinson
  15. The best thing to do is buy the neck.. the neck takes alot of tools... It's the most expense part to build... but he did say from scratch.. and I hate to say it.. but it's not cheap.. I'm just being as honest and realistic as I can be.. It's not a cheap hobby.. but then again it's alot of fun.. and please build anything you can and save money... don't go out buying all these tools at once.. you'll drain your pocketbook quick... You can make alot of these tools.. radius blocks, nut files, just to name a few.. but it's gonna take a while to learn how to and build them.. so you must be patient.. Listen to everyone.. they make some great points.. You don't have to have all these tools.. you just need to know someone who has them... For instance, my uncle has a drum sander that sands flat the tops and backs of the wood.. kinda like a planer except a flat sander.. and boy that helps out alot and makes the job alot faster... so just depends on how much patience you have.. and what friends you have.. lol.. anyway Good Luck Bro!! And take pictures!! Matt
  16. Yeah your idea is valid... would make sense.. and whose to say it's not a better way.. I only posted this because I had researched it some more and found out where he told how he did it.. what was neat was how they cut out the neck slot at an angle to give the neck an angle, so It just a set neck that's long..lol.. because it's the same procedure as any other set neck i guess... Yeah and I noticed that they didn't cut through the neck tenon completely.. so that's something to look for when trying this out. I don't know if I have the guts to try this style out just yet.. lol Wonder if we can sneak into their shop and watch em.. lol
  17. After taking Brian's advice... check out LGM's painting and polishing tutorials that are posted in this forum at the top.. They are really good tutorials... If your gonna use aerosol cans.. You want to look for acrylic lacquer products.. Plasti-Kote makes some good paint for the price.. but make sure whatever system you use.. use paints that's compatible... don't mix acrylic lacquer with nitrocellulose lacquer.. it doesn't bond well... if your not sure what type it is.. just go by the instructions on the back of the spray can.. it should tell you the exact type with number (ex: #629 clear coat) of the paints you need to keep consistant... Good Luck!! Matt
  18. Thanks for the information..
  19. I guess your misunderstanding me.. I never said that any guitarist was a god or should be idolized as one.. I'm not saying they are Gods by no means.. I'm saying there are some that come along that heavily influences guitarist styles.. that's all i'm saying.. that doesn't mean you was.. I'm just saying they influenced the majority of the guitar community.. Chuck Berry is also another one... and he copied T Bone Walker to some extent.. yes.. read my other post where i said "sure everyone imitates guitarist to some extent" ... what I was getting at was that some people flat out copy other people and don't even try to expand on it and find there own voice.. That's why the band Bush wasn't my cup of tea.. sounded too much like Kurt singing.. That being said.. please chill out .. because all I was getting at.. is that even though you may not like someones style.. at least have respect for what they are doing, because believe it or not you can learn something from everyone you listen to... Matt ps. my last post on this subject.. because it's getting old.. lol
  20. No offense Wes.. but I did look at the picture.. and it's not turned over. First off, just look at the Jaros neck.. it's tenon is almost even with the end of the fretboard.. less than 1/2 inch for sure.... the other necks like PRS and Quicksilver are Bolt-In necks.. thus they are made different.. also, if you look at the guitar where you can see the tone chamber, it's on the top of the guitar.. and look at the finished one.. it's also on top.. if it was upside down.. then it's definitely 2 different guitar types... I was inspired enough to research this some more.. since I really wanted to know.. lol... and found this link from Jaros guitars. It tells where he puts the back on the guitar first .. then cuts out the tenon slot on the top part.. here is the link... click on the link and then click on How We Build Them link from that page.. http://www.jaroscustomguitars.com/frameset.htm Btw I like this design... and the tips he gives.. pretty cool...
  21. I've never built a guitar with this design.. but if you look close at the Jaros guitar on Ed Roman's site you'll notice that they cut out the top for the neck tenon.. about 3/4 of the way through the guitar.. thus the 3/4 deep set tenon.. means just that.. it goes three quarters of the way through the guitar and is a set neck.. just like Gibson does a set neck.. only difference is that the Jaros is extended to near the bridge part... that's where the deep tenon part comes in.. the only thing I notice is that you'll have to glue it together then route out the cavities which looks to be not so easy... But maybe I'm totally off base with this.. Matt
  22. I've been to Ed Roman's site abunch.. some things I agree on.. some I don't.. but I just stumbled across an article that I wanted to share with you. It's the first time I've seen a comparison between Poly and Nitro. http://www.edromanguitars.com/tech/polyvsnitro.htm Seems like both have their distinct advantages.
  23. If you look at it like people who has a great influence on guitarist.. you'd think Jimi Hendrix, simply because he did things unheard of previously.. he was a trend setter... same as Eddie Van Halen.. everyone sounded like him after he came out... and I think Malmsteen is in the same category... after he came out arpeggios, sweeps, harmonic minor scale, was the norm... so what I'm saying is that if not for Malmsteen there might not have been a Vinnie Moore.. at least with the same style.. sure everyone imitates guitarist to some extent.. it's just that some are trend setters.. others are trend followers... look at Nirvana.. bands still sound them today... geez I hope someone with a new idea comes out soon.. at least learn to sing a little bit different from Kurt.. no offense..
  24. So your saying you can play better? Or just don't like his style? I find it really hard to believe that you wouldn't even consider him good at what he does.. you may not like it. I personally don't care for Nascar, but I respect what they do and can appreciate the fact that they worked hard to be able to excell at what they do. No, I don't listen to Yngwie everyday, I'd rather listen to Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Van or Jimmy Page, but I still can appreciate Yngwie for what he has accomplished. Let's just say I've heard worse guitar players.. lol.. Matt P.S. This post wasn't meant to make anyone mad.. just to make you think...
