I was working on a 8 string ebony neck thru and I can tell you this much, the stuff is massivly heavy! (my blank weighed in at just under 18 pounds) when I get a chance Im going to be restarting that guitar but with a maple/ebony lam, to save weight and because I think it will sound better as ebony is very bright.

no new updates yet, but I will be doing some work on the neck tomorrow

man that neck has come out sweet man, really cool to see other people making them and having fun with it! congrats man, and also that inlay looks awesome, did you cut the pearl yourself for it or buy it?

I would find some camo pattern canvas and cover the amp in that

that is exactly what I did on my neck and it came out very nice, not perfect, I still have a slight glue line, but still very nice

well what I did this time was slightly different, I made a mitre box with a 13 degree angle on it (good luck trying to find one anywhere, they dont make em) and cut my blank using that, after that I went over the cut with 150 grit, then glued it up, I might take pictures of the box tommorow

slight update, cut the neck angle for the scarf joint today, it is gluing right now, since I already have pictures of the last neck on here, im not going to bore you with pictures of the same thing, my radius sanding blocks and fretwire came in today as well so were slowly making progress again.

thats about all I figured as well, taping off the neck and after the body has been cleared then oiling the neck

you could always use a strat jack, and mount it on the back of the guitar

dont be sad man, just keep reading up on things your not sure of, if you have scrap wood, practice stuff on that, the most important thing I can tell you is to take your time and do a good job (dont rush things)

this is the method I plan on using with my neck, which if im not mistaken is the same way ibanez does there scarf joints, either way, I like the look of it and im thinking of doing a very small veneer of ebony or walnut between my maple for aesthetic reasons.

I can see the wave influence in that design myself (being an old bc rich fan) looks like a cool project, draw up some full sized plans if you havent already the horn's as have stated before look very fragile. good luck on it though and keep us posted!

thats definalty the idea, I have flubed up far too many neck's in the past to settle for "just ok" this neck is going to be as good as I possibly can make it that simple, if not well I do happen to have a WOD.... anyway, thank you for the kind words and I will post a picture of the plans for the "new" neck in the next few hours, I still have some measurements to get correct and all that good stuff.

quite true, the fretboard came in today and i must say, rich you are the man (and I know I say that everytime I recieve woods from you) this thing is awesome! Im going to have to wait now on the neck blank (which im hoping will be here friday, but Im going to be starting the full sized drawings in the next few hours

you do realize you could have this figured out by using the search function right? please there are several threads on this subject, it doesnt hurt to do your own research.

I must say that everybodies entry this month has my attention, every guitar is amazing and my vote is going to be tricky for me, so Im going to break it down: Swedish luthier's prs style guitar: Im really liking the finish on the guitar, the inlay choice was cool as well (i have never seen aluminum used as an inlay material, kudos) personally I think the choice in black hardware was a not a good one, chrome would have looked better (imo please dont take that as an insult, just personal perference with blue) *just a note, pictures of the back of this guitar would have been nice* Mattia's double cut santana influenced guitar: quite possibly the best inlay work I have seen on a gotm entry ever, excellent choice of color on the finish (impeccable work on the faux binding!), it really makes the guitar pop that much more, also the flamed maple mounting rings are really nice, that being said I think the spring cover should have been mahogany as well, but it still looks great. Rhoads weopon of mass distruction: what can be said about this guitar? perry you keep on outdoing yourself with every guitar I see, the camo job on this guitar is unbelievable, as is the ageing of the mounting rings and bridge. that being said I believe if the pickups would have been aged in some matter it would have brought it over the top. personally I dont think the sharktooth inlays go well with this guitar, the fit it but with the concept of the paint, they just are out of place (again imho) Guitarfrenzy's JV-1 I really like the shape of this guitar, as do I like the finish, the red burst looks really good, with the gold hardware and fretwire its a really classy looking guitar, the only thing I dont like about this guitar is the heel transition, while it looks good, my personal preference would have been a much smoother transition xlr8's rosewood LP: I have to start out by saying this, Im not a fan of LP's I dont know what it is about them, i just am not a fan, however that being said, this guitar got my attention when I first saw it, I like the idea of switching things up a bit, and the concept of a rosewood neck while not new is really cool to me (I plan on an ebony necked 8 string in the future myself) the carve on this guitar is what got my attention the most, It is extremely well done, and the finish (again im not a fan of burst's normally but this one does it for me) is pull of extremely well (I almost though this WAS a gibson until I read back through the thread!) the single layer of binding is very nice and isnt overkill like some guitars I have seen in the past So with all that being said, there's not really a guitar here I dont like, I wish I could vote for 2 guitars! my vote is going to have to go to mattia though.

nothing new to update, but this neck is going to have a 6inline headstock and im still undecided on the top wood for the body, im not sure If I want a quilt or flame top

I recently got a jack plane, spokeshave, and a few finger planes, now all of the blades on these tools are brand new and have not been honed yet, as I am still faily new to woodworking, and guitar building in general, I would really like to know how to properly sharpen my blades so that I dont ruin my tools.

well I would assume that banjo frets are very small? I just dont know, but I like the idea of using smaller frets the higer up you go on the fretboard, but does it make levelling and crowning the frets more difficult? (getting ideas for my 27...)
