  1. Im really gassing for a good neck through build, so I am preparing to get all materials I need together. Getting mahogany for the body and flamed maple for the top, and I was going to do maple/wenge/maple/wenge/maple laminate neck. Instead of wenge, is oak usable?
  2. (Edit: while a "noobie" in the guitar building world, I've been painting cars and parts for over 10 years) Any sandpaper above 2000 grit is a waste of time and money, and you will never truly "polish" your guitar with sandpaper. edit: Polyester Resin is INCREDIBLY hard and rather thick. Its actually really easy to buff out. Wet sand with 600, then 800, then 1000, then 1500. I usually stop there, but you can go to 2000 if you REALLY wanna make sure... From there you need a buffer. I use a dual acting orbital and a radial buffer. For newbies you should start out with a dual action and foam pads for the most "Safety". You need 3 pads. One for cutting, one for smoothing, and other for polishing. I use 3m compounds as they are diminishing abrasives and the easiest to use (for me!) Plus they are cost effective too. Cutting -> 3M rubbing compound Smoothing -> 3M polishing compound Polishing -> Adam's swirl and haze remover This stuff is art and takes a while to get a hold of, so you may want to practice on a cheaper guitar.
  3. I first went "Ewww..." but upon second look thats pretty freaking cool man.
  4. Sorry gents, posted this from my phone, and I guess it "Combined" some posts and caused me some confusion haha.
  5. This may be an option! perhaps the metal cast series of paint? Id LOVE a bright blue binding, but thats not happening any time soon!
  6. Weird... i swore i type stainless not chrome. Brushed s. Steel would kick ass. I hate chrome, not sure why i put that.
  7. I didnt specify, no worries man!
  8. Isnt that wood binding though? Im asking about plastic binding thanks though!
  9. Guitar neck has white binding... is there ANY way to make it blue without pulling it off? (acetone + food coloring? haha) Thanks in advance!
  10. Awesome! I love PAF pros, I have about 30 of em layin around for rainy days You know what'd be a better pickup for this build I think? An F2 would kick so much ass, it wouldn't even be fair to all other guitars. You lost me at the snake skin, but still looks AWESOME. If you have the balls for it, I think it would look AMAZING with stainless steel binding!
  11. In preparation for an entire build, I wanted to see how well I can do a carved top. I have an rg7321 I dont use very much, and the shape is less then inspiring! So... I chopped it up! Tried chiseling it out, but that failed, so I just went to town with some 40 grit sandpaper and a nice powered rotary sander. I also cut the treble side horn a bit to make it more "fluid", sculpted the heel for a COMFORTABLE transition, not just a block of wood in the way. Don't worry, I just applied some primer to see where any imperfections lie, so its just something my ****-ness compells me to do. I think the carve came out pretty nice, and the shorter treble horn seems to balanced nicely (in my opinion, criticism ALWAYS welcome). "big picture", the headstock will be painted to match. Closer image, ignore the discoloration, its simply where sanding sealer remained intact, so it stuck out better. Back side, you can see the contouring on the heel. Obviously sanded back and not near finishing. 2nd project. ebay JS1000 body, ibanez 540R neck. I've always wanted a "js 1" style guitar, but they are super rare, usually beat up, and come at a premium. So, I'll just build one myself! Im unsure why I decided to paint the neck, but I think its a cool effect. Still needs to finish curing all the way before I attack it with sandpaper, but its coming along swell. Going with all black hardware, ibanez edge, PAF Pro neck, and IBZ/USA f2 bridge. No fancy electronics, keeping it simple. Front Back
  12. Looks cool, but why would you want a guitar with miley cyrus on it? For pickups, the EMG 808's sound great in a 8 string. Im not a fan of actives, but they seem to work well on the rg2228.
  13. Yeah thats probably my problem. Cant do anything for a while though, tore a muscle in my pectorals, and Im down for the count for a while I'll sharpen up my chisels when Im back in one peice and go from there.
  14. *GASP* As I feared, it merely requires a level of skill and technique I don't have haha. Thanks for sharing. You make it look effortless, but its really not with any control like that.
  15. I don't have pictures, nor do I own the guitar any more, but a cool way to "enhance" grain without doing the usual "fill it with something dark then sand back" routine", is to burnish the wood before sealing. I used rosewood saw dust to do a maple neck, took forever, but looked incredible. I will be doing it again soon when I wrap up my parker project, and Ill post pictures of it when I do it then. Basically the process involves taking an oily wood (I imagine cocobolo would be amazing for this), and "rubbing it in" really hard. Probably would kick butt on swamp ash or other large grain patteren woods. These are the only images I could find online to kinda represent what I am talking about. Left side is unburnished, right side is burnished
  16. p.s. I've been carving a body lately, and I tried your "chisel" technique. I gave up very quickly as I was pretty much just taking monstrous gouges out of the wood. Can you elaborate on your technique a little bit? Im impressed with how clean you were able to do it! (I just said screw it, and used 40 grit sandpaper on a power rotary lol)
  17. Sick! I've wanted a tele like this for a while Nice fret work too, very well done. Is that a PAF Pro? Only thing I'd have done differently is sculpt the neck joint a bit more like an old school ibanez neck joint. Cant wait for this one!
  18. Good point! I still have a lot to learn!
  19. That is a HUGE neck joint... But doesnt look quite right for a set neck. Can you elaborate what you're doing here, or why you went with a large neck joint as you did? Maybe its the camera angles, I dunno.
  20. Normally dont like this kind of stuff, but he seemed to infuse art with style, not just some kid doing a crap "theme" to a guitar. Very well executed! Thanks for sharing!
  21. Pickups : In order: ACH1 ; ACH2 IBZ s1 ; IBZ V1 IBZ V2 ; tone zone SD 59 ; SD invader In order: strat set; IBZ S2 IBZ c2 ; IBZ JEM sup 58 brg ; sup 58 neck ACH1 ; ACH 2
  22. Edit : set of CHROME grovers are gone, Still have 2 chrome sets, 1 black, and 1 black chrome/nickel set left. Ibanez Super 58's may be gone via local sale. I'll update later today. THIS IS NOT EVERYTHING. Just most of it I grabbed. I also note I have found more things hiding in my boxes then I thought I originally had. If theres not a price, simply ask and I will post one. Pictures: Most everything together : Some of the tuners (just grabbed the first box) : Plates, covers, neck plates, etc ( I have a LOT of these floating around) : Apparently I have more floyd roses then I thought. I have even more in another box somewhere :
  23. Where did you get it? I've only seen it once, and it reminded me of tree sap lol edit : talking about the real mcckoy, not "tung oil finish"
