  1. Wenge is splintery wood, as in it likes to spontaneously jump in little needle like shards straight from the board and into your skin It can also be a little bit brittle, so you have to be careful routing... Other than that it has giant pores so grain filling is fun if you're into that... In the end all the hassle is well worth it though... it's beautiful wood when finished
  2. Speechless at the moment so I'll just
  3. Hey thanks Scott! I'm going to try to get some better pics outside in the sun for a GOTM Post...
  4. I picked up the LMII fret slotting system and fret rocker from baphometh... Great guy to work with, answers emails, and ships out very quick. 100% happy with my transaction
  5. I like the heel carve a lot, as well as the rest of the guitar It fits with the rest of the lines perfectly, and most of all looks like it would be very comfortable to play..
  6. This is a cool project! My son plays bass and I'm trying to get up the nerve to build one for him... I'm a bit nervous about the neck though, it's a lot of wood to keep straight
  7. Hey thanks Stu! Finished this one up yesterday, well besides the cavity cover I forgot to make Got it all set up and intonated, it has nice low action (1.8mm Low E and 1.5mm High E) at the 24th fret. I'm very happy with it, it plays effortlessly and it's very snappy. It will cut through a heavy mix for soloing perfectly. I went with Dimarzio Gravity Storm in the bridge and Fred in the neck, this combo makes for a real harmonic screamer! Simple electronics just a volume and an on/on miniswitch, with a recessed barrel jack... No sunlight here in Upstate NY for a week straight so here's some crappy inside pics...
  8. Looks beautiful in the sunlight! Are you going for a gloss finish with the Tru-Oil?
  9. Thanks! It was kind of boring before... Thanks! I had a problem with blotchyness until I started sanding to a finer grit before dying. Now I go to 600 grit and it seems to take the dye (at least analine dye) more evenly. With this one I sanded back to about where you see it now and used a very very diluted dye mix to even it all out. It didn't come out that good just after sanding alone...
  10. I like it man, especially the horns with the slotted areas... Pretty dam cool
  11. And this is what happens when I look at something for too long I didn't really like how the body fit together with the Spalted Maple headstock, so I came up with this. I think it works a bit better...
  12. I like the distressed look... It's very Metal What are you using for a finish on the fretboard?
  13. Thanks man I appreciate the compliment a lot! That swirl looks awesome so far... I love swirls, started my modding and building bug on swirls. I haven't done one for quite awhile, but I do have a spare RG570 body just laying around...hmmm... Here's the last one I did with One Shot Flouros and Spraymax 2k clear
  14. I hate shellac I've never had a good experience with it for some reason.... The poly works great for keeping the binding clean, but I haven't tried going over the dyed area with it, so IDK if it will pick up the dye like shellac did for you.... It's funny you mentioned the MM Axis... when I was planning the body shape out I tried to mix my favorite parts of the Axis and Tele together. I started with a template of a tele and made the back of the top rounded, a shorter lower bout with better fret access, and of course the top...
  15. Thanks! There was a hard line on the top after sanding up to 220 grit so I applied a coat of wipe on poly over the "binding" up to that line. Then I finish sanding the top up to 600 grit and that made the line almost perfect. I still had to be careful not to slop the dye all over, but the poly keeps little mistakes from soaking right in, and it's easy to remove after you're done dying...
  16. She's a really good dog, listens great and stays right by my side Here it is with some Teak Oil soaking in, looks a little closer to Tigger's brindle...
  17. I did a very slight burst today with dyes, a faux binding, and matching headstock... My helper in the workshop... Notice all the wood chips around her, she likes to chew up wood... Flamed Maple is her favorite
  18. They both look great man! I hope you get the neck issues sorted out on the V... The headstock on the Etna is wicked
  19. Thanks man! It's only because I try to pay attention to what all you guys are doing here For example, I used the pin method you explained to me for drilling the string-thru holes and it worked awesome! Also got the control cavity routed, side marker dots installed, and recessed jack drilled out. It's time to start thinking about dye....
  20. Damn man that's turning into something really special... The neck heel carve is awesome. I showed my son the first pic and he says "why is he doing that to that guitar he's ruining it". Showed him the last pic "oh"... Awesome work man!
  21. Thanks man... Not as cool looking as the ones you're coming up with, but it came out pretty good...
  22. Headstock cap is on and I got the neck shaped today. The Rosewood feels like silk after only sanding to 320 grit... Added a little more upper fret access...
  23. Here it is today... Pickup routes are done, got the neck pocket routed and the neck fitted, and the bridge located and mounting screw holes set... I was planning on carving out a belly cut, but I decided not to mess with the Squatch. It's comfortable enough sitting down which is how I play almost all the time anyway.... I'm not putting the volume knob there, I guess it moved on me
