  1. good ideas. I already got some black knobs that are the same as the white ones and it made a big difference. I just need to find some time to work on the neck. I like the idea of bolts for the knobs to go with the theme, maybe later on.
  2. Painting a fender logo on a squire wouldn' t be very popular around here though... edit: forgot to mention though....awesome airbrushing skills. I would replicate the existing logo which includes the fender logo although small. I am not trying to fool anyone, this is just a portfolio piece for me to keep around. Thanks all for the compliments
  3. Finally got around to finishing the frankenstein project. I need to paint the neck and headstock black as it looks out of place. Maybe a little lightning around a fender logo. I also need to find some black knobs to finish it off.
  4. I am in the process of trying to purchase a Alps 5000 printer. This thisng can print gold and silver foil or any other color including white and metallic colors. The cool thing is it can print the white and then print colors over the white. This allows water slides to be used on a dark background. If I can find a Alps in good condition at a decent price I may be able to offer some decal services. The printers are no longer made or supported by Alps.
  5. The problem is none of it really looks chrome. It looks more like shiney aluminum before it is cleared and then uch of the shine goes away after clear. Better used as an effect than a whole paint job. Alsa has a $7000 chrome system that really does look like chrome though. I use a lot of HOK and Alsa products and they are both good IMO.
  6. You can have a viynl shop cut a paint mask and spray the decal with paint. Using a airbrush it will be thinner than a decal. Alps printers are getting prett rare but many sign shops have Gerber Edge printers that can print white on decal material. Look for Cycle Art on the web, he hasa Alps and makes repro water slide decals for bicycles. You may be able to have them make you some.
  7. The quality difference between the finish from a good spray gun is worth a little cleaning. I generally do not take my guns all the way down unless there is a reason or it has just been awhile. My Iwata lph50 was just cleaned fully for the first time in 3 months. Most guns can be cleaned by running the appropriate thinner through the gun several times. The paint does not really go anywhere that the thinner cannot clean. If you only have one gun for prime, color and clear cleaning is more critical. I have a dedicated gun for each so not as much of an issue other than gun performance.
  8. I use the same auto paintis in my airbrushes as I do in a bigger gun. In the airbrush you generally reduce the paint more but that is the only real difference. Depending on the tip size of the airbrush you will reduce differently. Most airbrushes do not spray metallics really well do to the flake causing spitting since the tip size is pretty small. I would recommend using a larger gravity feed gun for painting the large area. For the burst the carboard shield method will or with either the airbrush or big gun. I woud spray from above the carboard to allow the overspray to get under the carboard andcreate the soft edge. I personally would just spray the burst without the shield method using one of my smaller guns that can atomize very well. You can try Coast Airbrush for small quantities of House of Kolor. The are in Cali and ship pretty quick.
  9. Printing the graphic is one way to get it on there. I am not a big fan of the decal route but some of them are cool. The trick is to get it printed in high enough resolution that you do not see dots. If you can get it done on a Gerber Edge it would be high res. As far as painting the plate it is not to difficult. Create a stancil with the shapes cut it it and add the correct shading to look raised up.
  10. The diamond plate version has the most character IMO. Very paintable. I have done diamond plate in the past and it is pretty convincing. It would be fun to do this one. Here is a painted version of diamond plate on a carbon fiber/kevlar bicycle racing disk.
  11. PM me with what you are looking for. Location is not a problem with shipping.
  12. You will still need to buff. I use trizac 3000 with an interface pad to sand and that makes it about 4000 and it still needs to be buffed with the last two stages of polish
  13. Remember this is not a true candy this is a House of Kolor KBC ( kandy basecoat ). HOK mixies candy and pearl basecoat together to make a paint that sprays like base coat and looks like candy without the difficulty that makes candy expensive. The base color does make a differnce on ho dark it looks in the end on this stuff. $50.00 or so for a quart of paint and quart of reducer. You would only need about 8-10 ounces ready to spray on a quitar body. coast airbrush sells small quantities of HOK if you do not wna tot buy so much.
  14. The burst is very nice and suttle color change. I really like using the Kandy Koncentrates in Intercoat clear when doing stuff like that. Sprays and dries like basecoat and cna be played with before final clear. Less build in the candy stage also.
  15. Thanks. Yeah the logo is debossed into the frame. All carbon fiber. Makes for a pretty cool effect when it moves past you.
  16. When you pick your colors you need to pic colors in the same family to keep it bright. If you allow complentary colors to mix together the will get dull. Green and Red are complementary colors and when mixed together will move towards a gray brown. So if you have a really bright red and you wanted to tone it down you would use some red to dull it. If you swirled the colors one at a time waiting for the other color to dry it would not be dull because the two colors have not mixed together. If you used Red, pink and yellow you would not get a dulling of the colors when they mixed. look online at some color wheels and color theory to decide on the color scheme Complementary colors Green - Red Yellow - Purple Blue - Orange
  17. HOK Kandy basecoat is what you need. It is a mix of Kandy and Shimrin pearl to create a basecoat candy that is easy to spray. The color you need is KBC-11 ( Apple Red - Kandy Base Coat) over FBC-11 ( Cinder Red - Shimrin fine metallic ) Even though it is a basecoat the base color does have an effect on the color in the end. Spray it over black and it is deep red and over the cinder it is like a true candy over silver base. I play with the base color when I use it and you can just use medium primer color to get different shades of the red. Her is a picture of my latest project using Kandy Basecoat Brandywine over medium grey sealer. not a guitar but the paint is the focus here.
  18. If you have a paint mask created at a sign shop you could use a sign paint like one shot that does not need to be clearcoated and is meant to be on the surface. Model paint would prob work as well and be cheaper as you can buy less paint.
  19. What is the logo? Without seeing the font or knowing what it is for it will be hard to give any suggestions. I generally create all my duplicated lettering from scratch as it is quicker than finding the font if one even exists.
  20. I usually start with 1500 in one direction. Then 2000 in a perpendicular direction until all of the 1500 scratches are gone. Then I use 3m Trizac 3000 on a 3 inch buffer. After the 3000 only a final polish with 3m PerfectIt is needed as I skipped the cutting compound by using the 3000. This is on 2k clear so I am not versed on the pitfalls of Laquer.
  21. Thanks. I am thinking of doing the headstock with the green and some lightning bolts and glow around the fender logo. I have not had time to clear this project yet bu tI am anxious to have it finished. not a guitar but it is wood. pinewood derby car for a friends son. 5 inch long x 2.5 inch wide. Need to finish the windows and clearcoat.
  22. That is amazing. I have mush respect for the time and skill it takes to do that inlay work.
  23. Dupont clear is also available in quarts so for around $50.00 you could clear 4-5 guitars with one quart. I like the Chroma Clear but they also have Nason clear that is less expensive at the dupont dealer. PPG also has a Omni line that is cheaper. But at $10.00 per guitar for clear how much cheaper does it need to be.
  24. If you have automotive equipment and do that as a hobby it is you should have the materials for the guitar also. The materials I use do not differ whether it is a guitar, bicycle or guitar. Use 2k auto clear.
