  1. Oh--I thought about the push/pull pot and don't really want it. For one, I wanted it so I could get either the north or south coil in addition to humbucking and as far as I've found there's no center-off push/pull pots which is what I need unless I wanted to do two push/pull pots. And, for two, I think the switch will look pretty cool.
  2. I was thinking that would work too. I'm honestly not that worried about the finish on this sucker (if I was I would likely not be drilling holes in it) so I think I might just try the masking tape for all the trouble it would save me.
  3. I want to install a switch for a coil tap in one of my guitars which means drilling a small hole. Is there some way to do this that minimizes the risk of chipping the finish? I was thinking I might try to score a small circle through the finish just slightly larger than the hole I wanted which would hopefully stop it from chipping any farther than that point. Or I might just not worry about it.
  4. I'm not entirely sure what you mean but if you are talking about creating the cavities that the trem fits in, you will need to use a router. You can get templates for various Floyd Rose configurations on the web.
  5. Whoa--cool V. I dig having all kinds of electronics and switches available on the guitar. I'm not sure how useful it will be live but it'd be awesome to be able to tweak my settings w/o having to reach for anything when I'm practicing.
  6. I like it, including the placement of the knobs though I think I might go w/ chrome to match the pups. Is one of the pots for blending the two pickups? I'm not seeing a pickup selector.
  7. Seriously, anti-christian symbols? Do people still do that to seem "alternative"? That was so ten years ago it's not even funny. Not alternative. Metal.
  8. That is one of the raddest things I've ever seen. It's always cool to take more of your designs into your won hands.
  9. I like the warm sound of rosewood better myself as well but ebony has it's own charms sonically... Either way, I've never had trouble w/ an ebony fretboard (even died ebony fretboards) leaving crap on my hands.
  10. Maybe you could use it for the wings on a neck-thru design. Doesn't seem like that would cause so many problems.
  11. I think it looks great. The eight-in-line one was too big but I think that will look just about right.
  12. I am w/ GregP on this one. Those are some ugly fiddles if you ask me.
  13. I love all my guitars for different reasons... I suppose my favorite is by Tribute ASAT just because it's got those G&L Magnetic Fields pickups that just sound incredible. Probably the guitar I pickup the most in any situation. It's got the heaviest tone of any guitar I've ever played. You can mess around w/ Ibanez, BC Rich, Jackson and all that but you haven't played metal until you've played ASAT metal. It's got more low-end than your mama. My Faded SG is awesome too. I've recorded and gigged w/ it more than anything else I own and it's got the war-wounds to prove it. It used to sound raw and warm/muddy w/ the stock pickups but now it's bright and jangly w/ the GFS Retrotrons I put in there. I think I'm gonna pop some new pups in there soon just for the hell of it. And lastly I like my formerly-Peavey guitar that I just call Detroit. It's the first guitar I ever took apart and put back together, the guitar I learned to solder on. And it sounds and looks great if I do say so myself.
  14. I don't really know about any of the PODs. Some of them sound great but, honestly, I'm not much of a digital guy at all. I work w/ computers all day so the last thing I ever want to see is another one in my guitar rig. My best advice would be not to worry about any effects at all and find a guitar and amp (and maybe a distortion pedal) that sound great together and go from there. It's really easy to be distracted by effects, especially when you have twelve gazillion in one of those pedals. That said, there's a lot of cool stuff out there to be had but it's not necessarily cheap. It's a cliched bit of advice but all I can really tell you is to go to your favorite local music store and try out as much as they'll let you. I've found that I'm not a huge fan of the BOSS effects in general though there are a couple good ones (I like the Blues Driver). Some of the Electro-Harmonix are really cool but they tend to break (as do DOD and BOSS pedals).
  15. I would first go in for a really nice distortion pedal of some sort, depending on what you play. I don't know what kind of money/commitment you want to put into this but the high-end stuff is totally worth it if you have the scratch. What kind of music do you want to play and what kinds of tones are you going for here? It's kinda hard to point you in the right direction w/o knowing what you want to play.
  16. Heh. I was kinda thinkin' the same, especially as far as the headstock. Just a little more pointy though.
  17. I really like that V design. Even if it's not original, I'm not sure how I'd improve on it...
  18. It sounds like a good idea to me. I would love to try one. It seems like it would be a fun challenge to work out a chording style on it and you'd probably end up working out some cool, unique chord voicings to fill out you sound. At the very least, you could make one hell of a racket.
  19. Looks cool. What scale length are we talking about here?
  20. Maybe I can get at least a body done before winter... Might as well try. I should be selling an old cab I have that I'm not using which will be enough to get me started.
  21. Well--I have a lot to consider now. Unfortunately, I don't think I'll have the money to get started until this winter and, as I mentioned, I'll have to work outside so it looks like I might be waiting until spring for my first build... In the meantime, I think I'll probably pick up a thing or two from StewMac and learn how to do my own fretwork or something to keep me busy.
  22. Wow. Those are gorgeous. I totally want some.
  23. Nice. I really like the swamp ash and you complimented the grain well w/ the shape.
  24. Guitar Geek stopped being updated almost two years ago and, as far as I know, there is no replacement. Really a drag since it's such a cool site. As far as Marley all I can find is this which says he used a Guild 12-stringer but nothing about amps: http://www.getthatsound.com/song%20pages/B...-this-love.html I wouldn't be surprised if he just used whatever was at the studio he recorded in at the time.
  25. Must have? There's only one box in my rig I really need which is my Keeley modded Rat II. Every guitarist needs a high-end distortion of some sort unless you have a really great sounding high-gain amp... I play through an old Bassman 100 so I am squarely in needs-a-pedal land. The great thing about the Keeley Rat is that it has this three-way switch and the "Mighty Mouse" mode covers the Tube Scream/OD territory pretty well, better than most Tube Screamers if I say so myself. I generally use the "Phat Rat" mode which is a beefed up version of the standard RAT sound--fuller and less raspy. Great pedal. Other than that, I get a lot of use of out of my Memory Man. I've had some flangers, phasers and other things in there too but those to me are sort of special effects that I can easily get by w/o w/ no problems.
