  1. Well, ok. We're all weird in some way.
  2. That was pretty cool, until he started talking all hippy/artsy/zen about his "craft". I don't quite buy into all that. Makes it seem like whoever says that stuff is trying to legitimize what they are doing.
  3. Peter also flipped the magnet in his pickup. That gave him the out of phase sound when he used both pickups.
  4. Does anyone know where I can get some plans for an Explorer type bass? One of my friends has asked me to build him one, so we're in the planning stages right now. I'd rather buy a set of plans if I can find them, than draw them up on this project. We're going with a bolt on neck.
  5. I'd go with the 6150, especially if you haven't done a lot of fret jobs. I like a little extra height on my frets, but i'm not really crazy about the huge stuff.
  6. You can do that. Just desolder the cover from the pickup, and it should come out easily. If there is some wax on the top of the pickup, leave it. Swap out the screws, and then put the gold cover on. Use a couple of small blocks of wood to press the cover on, so you get it on good and tight. You don't have to crank it down, just snug it up. Solder the cover back to the baseplate. If the cover isn't tight, it will squeal like a stuck pig.
  7. I'd go with the strat hardtail bridge. The T-O-M would be too tall, unless you angle the neck or route a slot in the body. If you routed a slot, it would probably still be hard to adjust the height.
  8. +1 what Canuk Brian said. If you want a good bit of chunk though, try some GHS Boomers. They seem to be considerably louder to me. Stainless Steel sound like crap to me clean, but under gain, you won't notice as much of a difference. If you go up more than one gauge in size, slot your nut to fit the new strings.
  9. I had one for a number of years. They sound ok stock, but not great. A little too buzzy and not enough low end. Having said that, i'll get one sometime down the road and mod it. I've heard there are a ton of mods for the DS-1 that make them sound great.
  10. +1 on the guitar template site. I ordered a 60s strat template, and it is very good. Pretty fast delivery, too! If a neck with 1 11/16" nut feels fine to you, I don't see any reason going to a 1 3/4" nut. The neck on Ed's 5150 had the adjustment at the body end. A lot of people complain about a heel adjusting neck, but i've never had to adjust a lot of necks, even with the high humidity where I live. Most Kramers used a 2 3/16" heel, which is pretty standard (Fendres uses it). I'd suggest a two piece neck for a first time build.
  11. For my first try at building a Les Paul, I used 2 2x8s glued together, with a Poplar top. Pine & Poplar sounds pretty good to me.
  12. Warmoth also sells fretboards. Like fyb said, Stew Mac is a good place also.
  13. I'm Magnus. I've been building for a little while now, and been lurking on the project guitar site for a long time. Pretty cool place, looks like i've got a lot of reading old posts to do. Looking forward to hanging out with you dudes.
