No, but it's a good place to start.
If you start building with a piece of wood that has no resonance (just goes "thud" when you tap it), there's little you can do to improve on that. If you start with a lively piece of wood, (one that has a nice, ringing "knock" when tapped) it's a lot less likely that you'll have a dead instrument. Of course, a lot can happen with all the cutting, drilling and carving, but it's always good to start with an advantage.
