  1. These necks look great, Jeremy! At first i wasn't too crazy about the headstock design, but now i kinda like it. I think it'll work with the JEM/RG body style better than Ibanez's own headstock. It almost reminds me of a 6-inline version of Caparison's head.
  2. Thanks for the tips, Ben. What's the part number of the switch you finally settled on? And a wee diagram of where to wire the resistor would be helpful, too.
  3. Yeah, divide 7 by 32 to get the decimal equivalent, which is 0.21875 in. Multiply that by 25.4 and you get the millimetres: 5.55625 mm
  4. The big problem isn't with the metric conversion. That's an easy calculation: 1 inch = 25.4 mm. The problem is with the damned fractions! You have to do a whole other set of calculations just to figure out what 7/32 of an inch is in decimal form. The reason why the US hasn't gone to the Metric system yet is 1) stubbornness; and 2) EVERY industry from forestry to paper to tool and die making, etc. would have to re-tool, purchase new machinery, reprogram their software... everything. That's why a lot of industries in Canada (which officially uses the Metric system) still have to go by old English measurements for compatibility with North America-wide industry standards.
  5. Or here's a more conservative version, which is more along the lines of Jackson's SLS headstock:
  6. I've always thought that the headstock should be an integral part of the overall design of the instrument, and that the overall look should be balanced and harmonious. Here's what i think a Rhoads V headstock should look like:
  7. Start carving away wood. Stop when you're done.
  8. For Canadian users, the Veritas tool line is made by Lee Valley tools, and they're available from their catalog, their physical stores, or online.
  9. I've seen pics of a 7-string version of the Original Floyd Rose on ESP's Japanese site, but i have no idea where you can order one. I think that's probably the only high-end alternative to the Ibanez Edge/Edge Pro 7-string units. For the Tune-O-Matic options, try contacting TonePros and see if they can sell you one of the 7-string ones they've done for ESP for the Stephen Carpenter signature models.
  10. Oval head wood screws are what's commonly used for attaching using a neck plate. Just buy the right oval-head machine screws (#10 thread pattern) in the length you need to match up with those inserts. I've got a bolt-on guitar project waiting to be finished and assembled, and i think i'm going to try using threaded inserts with it. I'd love to use oval-head Robertson machine screws for better durability than Phillips heads give.
  11. Very tough choice, for sure. It was down to Lex and JFC for me. Ultimately, i voted for Lex, mainly because i feel it's a very aesthetically pleasing and original design, plus that walnut looks tasty enough to lick! Fantastic work from everyone. (Especially JFC... outstanding work for your first guitar!) There are no losers, as far as i'm concerned.
  12. Have you tried Radio Shack or some other electronic supply shop?
  13. No, but it's a good place to start. If you start building with a piece of wood that has no resonance (just goes "thud" when you tap it), there's little you can do to improve on that. If you start with a lively piece of wood, (one that has a nice, ringing "knock" when tapped) it's a lot less likely that you'll have a dead instrument. Of course, a lot can happen with all the cutting, drilling and carving, but it's always good to start with an advantage.
  14. I think this thread was supposed to be about the free image hosting, not the SRV replica. Perhaps it wasn't the best photo to post as a demonstration?
  15. Man, i wish you'd consulted me on the name and logo.
  16. Damn. That is a really thick body! Very cool! And the LEDs rock... was it a tough thing to do? (Nice rear-mounted EMGs, too!)
  17. That's nothin'... have you seen the DOUBLENECK version of that?
  18. Isn't that the whole point? I'd say do the headstock first and if you have enough left over, do the guard. If not, just go with a mirrored guard, and it'll look cool. But the overall sparkly effect will be lost.
  19. Very cool, Rob! Are you going to do the pickguard as well? (or put a mirrored guard on there?) I think a mirrorballed pickguard would look cooler than a solid mirror. Definitely gotta do the headstock to match. I like the way you followed the contours of the body... with those smaller tiles, i think it definitely looks better than the mirrorball Universe that Vai has.
  20. The neck shaping method i learned was using a spokeshave and rasps to get the overall shape and dimensions established, and then sanding just to smooth it out.
  21. Wow... i love seeing a guitar come together! I hope you cut that top a little oversized.
  22. The guy was clearly in the wrong by trying to make money off something that one of his clients gave him. Why is it that some people feel entitled to do whatever they want with digital files? In future, you could minimize misunderstandings by embedding authorship, usage and copyright information right in the file. It would also be a good idea to lock them so they're "read only" if you don't want people modifying them or using them without proper credit. That said, they aren't original works... you've created drawings based on something that already exists. I'm not sure if copyright would protect a direct technical drawing of someone else's design. My advice would be that if you don't want your work misappropriated, don't stick it up on the Internet!
