2nd Project - Refinishing A Black Beauty

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

after being such an idiot and big mouth showing off my first project ( http://projectguitar.ibforums.com/index.php?showtopic=15621 ) at work, one of my Big Boss came to me and want his 2500 euro Black Beauty also to be finished with Batik fabric .. and of course silly me, said " .. yes I can do that.."

I tought he was joking, but when he came to my home with his Les Paul .. i'm just speechless ..

Well here's a start ..

1. stripping the body http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y44/mpel2...ackbeauty-1.jpg

2. glueing the fabric http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y44/mpel2...ackbeauty-2.jpg

3. Cutting the edges http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y44/mpel2...ackbeauty-3.jpg

4. Sanding the body after applying vernis http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y44/mpel2...ackbeauty-4.jpg

5. Vernishing second time http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y44/mpel2...ackbeauty-5.jpg

Wish me luck !

That's a really cool process you have going there. Who knows.. you might start the next big fad n the guitar world :D

That would be totally nerve racking. When i was in high school (many moons ago) my friend wanted me to route out his USA strat flametop for a different type of trem.. I know the feeling and the pressure.. My route job turned out great and the Kahelr flyer rocked on that guitar.. but 2 weeks later, he dropped it on a concrete floor and the clearcoat just shattered across the whole face of the guitar :D

Have fun wtih it, and keep up the good work. Nice to see some different stuff in here.

Wow... that body does look real real real cool. I bet you'll get a promotion for this one.

Anyway, Are there any fabric-finishing tutorials out there? Do you first take the old finish off and then put on the fabric? What glue is needed? What's vernish?

You know, all the usual pack o' questions that n00bz0rz ask.

I though of building a tele and carving a pattern on the top. Now I'm thinking of a fabric-finish instead.

EDIT: Found one: http://www.projectguitar.com/tut/mat.htm :D

Althogth that looks cool with the fabric and all, I agree with Cudbucket, Who would wanna do that to a LPC?! They're just too nice to do that too! And i'd understand if it was an epiphone, but a feckin expensive gibson?! dude, your boss has a screw loose!!

That looks awsome.  How did you get the fabric to lay on that carved top without bunching and wrinkeling.  Nice work with the binding as well.

hi jer7440,

The more i learn working with fabric, i love it, because of the easy apply on wood actually. You can easily pulling the edges, stretching with your finger top 'till it dry.

@sambo,

i think he's insane, hehehe .. i tought he was sending me an Epi or even worst Agile or kinda stuff .. but heck, it is a '57 RI LPC .. i never had it before in my hand .. perhaps when i screw it, i could get his cheaply :D :D
