I have to remind myself not to be ****, because with dark finishes no matter what I do, there are still a few itty bitty scratches. I know there will be worse scratches on it after 5 minutes of playing it, but I still want it to be perfect. I sand to 2000, swirl remove like a freakin lunatic, then use the imperial hand glaze pretty heavily. They just don't go away. I sand with 2000, but you have to be very careful about what paper you use, 3M 2000 sucks, I like Meguiars. Then I use a power buffer to bring back the shine, with black I start with a medium cut, then fine, then ultra fine, then swirl remover. jmrentis Posted May 27, 2005 Report Share Posted May 27, 2005 Quick question, I have a small chip in my headstock and I'd like to repair it and refinish it, I know I will have to sand it down but how far, to be able to do a finish like that, it's already black and thats what I want to keep. Will I have to sand past the color and start from scratch or will the base paint be ok? You do great work, hope to get a couple pointers. THANKS. Would I be able to get it here in the UK?? Kammo1 ← The Poly I use is RM Diamont DC95. It's about $375 per gallon (US) with the hardener and reducer. You have to have a booth and forced air respiration to spray it, it's deadly stuff. I don't know if you can get it in the UK, but other brands that work just as well are Dupont, PPG, House Of Kolor, etc. 2 Part automotive Poly Urethane. Jason Sadly to get it to look perfect you'll have to at the very least reclear the whole headstock. You'll have to fill the chip with black to level it out, then reclear it, if you want it to be perfect, you can spot fill it, drip in some clear, and sand and buff and you might get it near perfect, but if you have logo's over the clear (like Ibanez does often) you'll ruin the logo's when you sand and buff. I will definately look at the stuff you have mentioned and I would like to get away from the laquer I'm using as its always moving and shrinking back and although it looks great at first 2 months down the line it looks all grainy. I have had a thought and maybe youre expert advice could steer me into making the right move and that is if I used a 2 part polyurethane as a sealer and grainfiller and let this set up for about a week and then flat everything flat and level and then used the laquer as a finishing coat would this be advisable and would it present any problems with the laquer?? as always any help is greatly accepted. I had removed the logo when I replaced the tuners. I thought it looked nice just straight black. There is however a shadow left from the logo, that you can see from some angles, so sanding it back would probably be the best way to go. The original paint almost looks like a layer of plastic, is this how it looks when your finished, like glossy plastic? Its probably all the clear coats that makes this effect, but it seems strange to me. Again thanks for all the help and keep up the fantastic work.
