Need Help Identifying Some Wood...

Recommended Posts

Okay so my brother has moved out and in his new apartment was this old table made out of pretty nice wood. As he didnt want it and we really dont have a use for it at home I thought I could butcher it and make a guitar of out it.

I need help identifying the wood, or at least coming close or getting some kind of notion of what it might be. It was too heavy to be made out of thin veneered stuff and theres a crack in one of the sides that shows no signs of it being anything but real wood.

I was thinking about maybe Oak, it being pretty heavy and all. But I'm a complete dunce when it comes to this. It has been finished with something and that doesn't really make it easier for you guys.

Here are some pictures that I took of it:

One of the sides:

The whole thing:

If you think the pictures are too bad I'll try and get some better ones tomorrow.

Thank you in advance, David.

The blotchyness tells me it's stained. The wavyness in the last picture reminds me of a desk I had that I figured to be figured red wood once I took off the finish...at least the top of it was.

I would carve out a hunk to get under the finish, or maybe sand off some of the finish to get a better look.

I would keep it or sell it in tact(looks like a nice piece of furnature). Then purchase wood for a guitar. You probably will not get the thickness you need for body or neck material. It looks kinda like a lighter colored wood with a dark stain. Kinda looks like it has some light curls, which reminds me of Birch, Beech or Oak. Hard to say from the pics.

Peace, Rich

Hey your imagination, your guitar...know what I mean. I was just joking a little cause the desk does look like a possible reproduction piece to me, and I think there is a good possibility that he may be able to sell it for enough to cover the wood for at least one guitar. But if he isn't willing/able to wait to sell it to buy the wood he needs, then it's better he carve it up and try to make a guitar with it rather than send it to the dump. :D

The reason I wanted to make a guitar out of this is if I bought wood I would have to ask the people at the store to cut It up for me, plane it and stuff because I have practically no tools for big stuff.

If I took the larger pieces of this and glued together sandwich style, I'd surely have enough thickness for a body and probably wouldnt need to plane anything assuming it hasn't warped already.

EDIT:

Heres a pretty bad picture of unfinished wood from the top of the table.

You can see the grain lines if you look close and when I look at it here beside me it looks alot like birch.

Well the table is now in pieces and the only thing that was completely made out of one single wood was the top, which probably is birch. Everything else was pine veneered with figured birch or some other wood I can't identify, sorta looked like cherry.

I've seen lots of guitars made out of birch and hell Metal matt made a V out of oak. I will try and make a guitar out of the tabletop.
