Paul Marossy Posted September 13, 2005 Report Posted September 13, 2005 Has anyone ever heard of a power tube literally blowing up (shattering) while the amp was being played? This has happened to someone I know, and I am at a loss as to why that could have happened. Could that happen if you had a runaway power tube? Quote
ansil Posted September 13, 2005 Report Posted September 13, 2005 actually yes i have seen it once. but it probally isnt why yours happened the guy had a transformer problem and somehow [i dont' knowhow ] he was getting mains on his power tubes and they quite literly shattered. as well as before went molten. but he got a free amp out of the deal and never got shocked so hey kudos. Paul Marossy Posted September 14, 2005 Author Report Posted September 14, 2005 Hmm... maybe his power transformer went bad? Could be... Quote
frank falbo Posted September 14, 2005 Report Posted September 14, 2005 Is there a grassy knoll nearby? Was he playing one of those 36 fret Washburns during a big solo? Maybe he's just that awesome, that he can shatter a tube. My guess would be a faulty tube/faulty seal. And when the seal finally gave, the tube shattered. Or the tube was hit, and the seal broke. rhoads56 Posted September 14, 2005 Report Posted September 14, 2005 I recently bought a plexi re-issue marshall Within three weeks: Both power tubes, filter caps, and the transformer went. This sent a surge of power through to my speaker attenuator, and melted that too. $750 for the repairs. Quote

Wow, did you get one built on a Friday, or is it something that happens a lot with that particular model? My guess would be a faulty tube I'm hoping it's something that simple. Quote
rhoads56 Posted September 14, 2005 Report Posted September 14, 2005 no idea, apparently the filter caps are rare to see faulty, and the repairer said marshall trannies are bullet proof. Just bad luck i guess Quote
sepultura999 Posted September 14, 2005 Report Posted September 14, 2005 When my dad's 60s sears amp went I took it to a local guy who replaced the fuse, power and preamp tubes and transformer, all for 100 bucks :S lol Quote
Jehle Posted September 14, 2005 Report Posted September 14, 2005 Blowing up amps and tubes reminds me of SpinalTap. Perry, I'm afraid to ask if $750 was the repair bill for the blown amp, what did it cost new? Was it even worth that to get it repaired? Quote
rhoads56 Posted September 14, 2005 Report Posted September 14, 2005 $750 aussie dollars to repair an amp worth $3200 new, sure thing. Even after the repair i came out cheaper, cause i got a "staff" discount Quote
ansil Posted September 18, 2005 Report Posted September 18, 2005 so perry i take it you dont' need an amp any more since you dont' reply??? just asking. Quote
rhoads56 Posted September 18, 2005 Report Posted September 18, 2005 haha, yeah, well. You sold my amp Quote
ansil Posted September 19, 2005 Report Posted September 19, 2005 yeah but i always have an extra Chasis lying around. right now i got three. Quote
