neck woods

Recommended Posts

hey i'm in camp and i want to build a neck in woodworking...all they have is pine and oak? any use making one? thankz-dmitry

Good question. I would think that pine is too soft.

I, however, have some 100 year old Heart Pine that I was thinking about using. It's a lot more dense than your hobby grade pine. I'd like to hear some opinions on that too.

i used oak on both of my guitars! , it rocks... but be careful as oak can be a very unstable wood, it will warp if you even mention the word dampness.... :D

oak is very strong also and in my opinion is quite suitable for use in guitars.

rock on brian may!

even though it doesn't have oak, i must say that GHV is a pretty sweet looking guitar, wouldn't mind getting my hands on the design for that :D anyone know where?

oak was used in alot of old fender lap and pedal steel guitars. I'm currently building a lap steel out of white oak, and while for the most part it's easy to work with, it likes to split when you go across the grain with a file or router. so just be mindful of that and i think you'd be fine.
