Flame Maple

i've seen the topics and tutorials on staining flame and quilted tops. What if you want to keep it natural but enhance the figure. What do you need to do?

Before I give my answer I'm gunna say this: I've never stained before In my life.

HOWEVER, I'm sure you could stain it with a dark color, and then sand back until it's natural again and the stain is jsut in the flames.... someone with more experiance chime in please and say yes or no... but I'm guessing you COULD do that... test on scrap??

Depends on how much enhancement you want.

Shellac or some type of oil finish (compatible with your clearcoat) would give you a more subtle look. Or you could stain it amber, sand back, then do a final pass of light amber.

Yes, test on scrap first.

Watco natural danish oil is a great product for this kind of thing. I am doing a Purple heart neck through that will be finished natural but i want the grain to stand out a bit more than just with lacquer.

Just by chucking 20 odd coats of clear over it will enhance the figure but as people have mentioned, it depends how much you want to pop it out. You could as mentioned add a little amber'ish colour to your clear which would bring it out and subtle it down a bit. As usual, prat around with scrap first until you find something you like.
