carousel182
This is just a basic carved top strat with a curly spanish cedar top, poplar back, black binding, curly maple neck and a rosewood fretboard. It's not done yet, but it is getting there. Hope you guys like it.
verhoevenc
What is the "black" binding? Chris
carousel182
the "black" binding is just plain old thick stewmac black binding. i should probably add that its not really sanded or finished yet. fookgub
wow, pretty! Dig the carves and the top is very nice. I'm getting orange overload from your couch, though. Don't mean to alarm you, but you built it upside down.
carousel182
Heh, I hate having to play lefty, but its either lefty or nothing for me, my left arm is a little messed up. It does look really orange, I love it though. I'm just oiling this one, I think, all my guitars have hard finishes and that soft compared to other spanish cedar I've used. Blackdog
Nice, VERY nice !!! That carve and the extended horns really made that body specially nice and modern looking. Some seriously flamed neck too !! What kind of bridge are you going to use ??
carousel182
Just a hard tail now but later I will route for a trem. The SG is still going on, I just got pretty busy and forgot about it and because i didn't get much interest i stopped posting.
low end fuzz
yes; very nice indeed; whenever i hear 'strat' i roll my eyes a bit; but thats stunning!
carousel182
I build actual strats sometimes too, there outline is identicle so i just call them both "strats" haha. I'm gonna make my own shape one of these days so that i can call it something other than a strat.
carousel182
So I drilled the peg head holes, and started to fret the guitar but something came up that made me stop, its going really well though, all my frets seem to be seated perfectly so far. carousel182
I did the pot holes and the selector switch hole, I don't know if Ill use those knobs, they kinda look good with the poplar but i don't wanna mismatch too bad. carousel182
I used tons of danish oil and wax on this one, its looking good I think. I love the way the grain looks at certain angles (second picture.) This will be finished as soon as my neck bolts come in
peterbrown
That is a sweet look with the danish oil. Nothing like an oil finish to make it pop! And the black binding contrasts the orange nicely and defines the outline of the guitar well. A good look I think. Cheers, Peter
carousel182
Thanks Peter. I just did some work on the back sanded it and oiled it a little. Not done yet still needs more coats and wax.
Geo
I never thought I would say this... but... "that poplar is beautiful!" As is the rest of the guitar. The carving is downright sexy. Keep up the good work.
carousel182
Thanks! I've been pretty luck with the poplar I've found. It all seems to be pretty clear.
IPA or death
I like all of the woods you're using there, but I have to also point out the beautiful poplar. Really nice grain and color. Great looking guitar, keep up the good work.

carousel182
finished this up, I really like how it plays. It sounds pretty good actually coming out of the GFS pickups Edited January 5, 2009 by carousel182
KenHan
Totally AWESOME man!!! it really does stand out as a "professional" handmade guitar, and it will inspire many off us mere mortals to aim a little higher .. thanks for sharing //Ken1

chops1983
Awesome Guitar! I love the timbers you used and your build looks sweet! Top work!
Maiden69
Very nice! I like the carve a lot, and yes, you had good luck on that piece of poplar! I'm drawing up a lefty right now for my son and it might be close to what you did, but I'm without the top.
carousel182
Thanks guys! I think that with this guitar the thin lightweight body is key. It still sounds very good but also is lightweight and the most comfortable guitar I've made to play. The poplar spanish cedar combo is working out great for me. This is definitely my favorite guitar to play. I'm very pleased with the GFS pickups actually. The tuning stability isn't bad at all either. If I could only keep one guitar that I've made it would be this one easily.
twangmeister
That looks fantastic - how did you do the carve ?
