Bionic Dave
What's the best glue to use for plastic binding? I've never used binding before. Will wood Glue work? Crazy Glue? or Fast setting clear Epoxy? Thanks
Geo
I've used superglue, but I don't know if that's best. You want to apply it pretty thinly, otherwise it will be forced out when you press the binding in, and it'll get all over your fingers and the rest of the guitar. marko_slash
Can Cyanoacrylate be used?
ihocky2
Yes it can, Cyanoacrylate is the proper name for super or crazy glue. Usually referred to around here as CA glue. Wood glue can not be used for plastic binding. Wood glue forms a chemical bond with the cellulose fibers of the wood. Wood glue has a very poor mechanical bond, as displayed when joints have too large of gaps. CA is very good for gluing plastic binding. As long as it is ABS binding or another type that will disolve in acetone, you can even use acetone as the glue. Brush a little on the back of the binding and press it on. CA has the benefit of the added adhesive in it, plus the solvents help to bite into the plastic. Either way, scrape or sand the glue surface of the binding to remove the sheen first. Also slightly dampen the edge of the wood, since the wood will try and wick the moisture of the glue in too fast.

Woodenspoke
I have never used CA to glue binding. Weldon sold by SM gives you a bit longer open time and a white product sold by LMI is also good with a lot less clumping and mess than the Weldon product. If you have never glued binding be careful as CA gives you a short open time unless you are using a gel which isn't mentioned.
Bionic Dave
I'm in the process of shaping the binding to the body. but I was thinking again of using a 5 minute epoxy. would epoxy be alright to use?
Prostheta
I can't see why not, although the methods mentioned are the more commonly used ones. I prefer CA so I can physically hold the binding on till the glue dries.
marko_slash
That Binding cement (or something similar) from stewmac seems to be the best solution, but they don't ship it by air mail, so It is useless xD
Prostheta
I'm sure there are similar products in Europe available to Bosnia/Herzegovina. This is the stuff Stewmac are selling (third product - "16"): http://www.ipscorp.com/assembly/acrylic IPS Weld-On 16 Product Datasheet Looks like it's pretty much a bog standard item, and no doubt there will be comparable products out there. It's sold in the UK also: http://www.smallwonder-music.co.uk/shop/pr...History=related Similar: http://www.anticsonline.co.uk/1213_1_15391.html You'll most likely be better off buying a bottle of acetone to bond the binding (as long as acetone melts it) and some good quality binding tape. Nail varnish remover, but preferably without the conditioners :-D Edited June 25, 2009 by Prostheta
wood is good
Ive tried to use Epoxy. I scuffed the plastic binding sides, but There was NO adhesion at all. After the epoxy was dry, It just flaked off from the plastic binding.
postal
Use weld on or acetone. This stuff melts the binding (ABS/Nitro) which is how you get that perfect seam. No other glue will look as good. If you use acetone, take small pieces of extra binding and cut them into little bits. Drop the pieces in a small bottle of acetone. Shake the bottle once in a while over several hours or even a day. You want the acetone to turn into a gel from the abs or nitro. Keep adding small amounts of binding until it gels up. Use abs pieces in acetone for abs binding, and use nitro pieces for nitro binding. This stuff sets pretty quickly, so be ready-
