Ibanez Rip-off Revival, Build #2

Recommended Posts

Here she is now, $45 at GuitarCenter. It's gonna take a lot of love, but I hope I'll be able to do it.

That's all I have to work with, because I'm still undecided on just about everything. I'm going to get Melvyn Hiscock's book at the library tomorrow, and I'll start sanding today, and put up some pics of the progress when I'm done.

Normally I wouldn't be interested, but I have a soft spot for the original Ibanez GRX20. It was my first guitar after all :D

I'm not sure if that's what it is. The neck is authentic, but the body is something else. I have yet to find any surprises. :D

Yeah, that body doesnt even look like an Ibanez. So what are your plans for this project? Did you check the scale length and all that stuff to make sure the body and neck are even compatible? Ibanez use a 25.5" scale on the RG, but given that the body is a mystery it could possibly have the bridge in the wrong location if the original guitar was much different than an RG. good luck with the build. Could be interesting.

I doubt it will be a problem. 99% of off brand guitars are 25.5" scale. Most guitar copies use the same scale as the one being copied also.

That body is almost an exact copy of an Ibanez GIO 22 fret model, apart from the rear route, the only difference I can see with the model they sell in :D is the top horn join stops just short of the neck join end, on the real Ibanez it is equal. I reckon you will be able to make a really good guitar out of it if you bling it up. You might want to consider, repairing the black finish, it looks like it is in good nick apart from the chips. It is probably a 5 piece basswood under the finish, don't know if it is worth stripping. Good luck with it.

The neck pocket being in the wrong spot can throw off the scale completely though. 25.5 or not, lots of companies put their neck pockets in different spots due to different tennon lengths

But if it was made for the same fret number and scale, It will still match... It still has to be the same distance from the bridge. The only thing that would throw it off is if one neck had an overhang and one did not.

Heel is the back of the neck where it sort of humps out near where it joins the body. I said "tenon" which is the part of the neck that goes into the body. A shorter tenon would = more overhang on the fretboard. Hope that clears up any confusion.

The Scale on the neck is right, checked that when I got it. The body, I'm going to fill in the neck humbucker and Trem, and dowel the controls, since the holes for the pots are pretty much melded. But, here's the list 'o' parts:

GFS Crunchy PAT Humbucker........$22.95

Epiphone non adjustable tailpiece...From Resto AD

Black Speed Knob.........................$3 shipped off of another forum

GFS 500K pot...............................$2.45

Chrome Super Smooth GFS tuners.$21.95

Total w/o finish.............................A hair over $50

All the other parts I have already, and I have to buy wood, epoxy, and paint. I'm thinkin' red with a white bucker. Whaddya guys think? Yeah Muzz, The previous owner beat the living hell outof this thing. It's just somethin for me to expiriment on. Cheers :D

EDIT: thought i'd add this in: I busted my cheek on Wednseday playing baseball at practice. They said I needed plastic surgery, then they said I didn't, and now I got to go back on June 3rd to see if i need surgery. I was lucky I didn't bust my eye socket. OUCH!

Yep red with a white pup, and pickguard? would look cool.

Speaking of red w/ white......., whatever happened to your floyded strat build?

No pickguard, but I may make a little pickguard, like on a strat o sonic. OurSouls, I really miss that build. My younger brother beat the living crap out of it. He cut the body to bits with a coping saw, busted the headstock, pulled the frets, busted the binding, and made a crapload of scratches and nicks. :D I had a deal on a black $35 floyd too. :DB)

My plans are changed. I found out the tailpiece needs a neck angle, so I'm stickin' with the trem. I also need to find somene who's got a cheaper set of humbuckers. I'm thinkin' blue, because that what we have. Maybe with some black, too. That's it for now, stay tuned!

Did some more work today:

The rosewood fretboard ruins it, but oh well. I'll be replacing the trem with a guitarpartsonline standard trem, and I'll be filling in the neck pup, and using an MIM Fender Strat humbucker. The body will be the same, and I'm considering a gpo preamp. I have absolutely no money right now, and my birthday isn't until October. :D Oh well. If anyone is interested in the blood splatter, send me a pm and I'll tell ya.
