Srv #1 Build

Recommended Posts

That's what someone wants to hear when they've worked their tails off on something after all. I guess not everyone's mother was like mine with the "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all" advice. Now we'll hear how insults are supposed to make people better builders.

I am more of the constructive criticism camp - which should be positive as well as pointing out any room for improvement - tbh i get quite annoyed when all i get is "wow - nice build" responses. Thats fine in everyday life (and from my mother) but i want something more constructive from a bunch of specialists so thats what i try and give.

I couldnt give a buggery about the logo thing, unless i saw it listed for sale somewhere as genuine

The reason I dont throw in my .02, is because a lot of these guys are waaaaaay better than I am. I am in no position to criticize at all. Even if there is something I dont like and wouldn't do myself, I'm not gonna burn a bridge from a future friend by criticizing it. And some people can take it, some can't. So you never know who's ass you're gonna chap.

The only criticism I have ever brought here was in terms of the hiscock book, but I dont plan on buying the second, so that's a line im comfortable crossing.

Anyone check out his website?

http://www.divebombinc.com/

On the front he has a picture of a Music Man he is calling the Venna

That's a copyright infringement.....

I sent an E-mail to Ernie Ball with the link.

He is also selling a guitar called an LP Custom that looks just like an LP Custom

http://divebombinc.com/product_info.php?cPath=1&products_id=74

I sent an email to Gibson (they love cease and desist letters)

This star...another copyright infringement

So, I'm guessing that this "Fender SRV" is not too far away from being sold to an unsuspecting buyer who might not know the difference. You can never really know someones intent but clearly, this poster has listed some very questionable items for sale on his website. yes, no actual logos listed but clearly he is not interested in originality. Oh, and yes, I already sent an email to Fender. I'm sure he can expect a few C&D letters in the mail.

Edit: yah, and he has the SRV bodies for sale on his site too

calling the les paul style guitar a les paul custom on the website is a big no-no... and yes selling these SRV replicas with a fender logo will also get you into trouble. You might want to change the wording on the website - many luthiers make closer LP replicas than that and get away with it by calling it something different and changing the headstock slightly. i would say that les paul is different enougth to be safe, but not if you use their name

not sure on the musicman clone - it doesnt have the 4x2 headstock which is something they protect very strongly

I like using a 4x2 HS.... I don't copy anyones shape, but i didn't realize MM had a lock on their headstock shape.........

There's also the SRV signature on the back of the guitar.

and to me thats the difference between Paulie's guitar and this one - Paulie's is pure ART. This one is sweet, but takes it into the realm of mud.

I don't like mud.

That'll teach me to defend anyone :D .

Yes, I would say that if you make it for the sole purpose of selling (and even reproducing in small batches) you're probably going to get into trouble. I figured not having a serial # (I'm assuming he hasn't added one) would be the dead giveaway to any potential customers.

I guess I'll have to say nice work but you're treading a slippery slope by trying to make this a business.

I didn't post this correctly... But

Why in the hell would you report him for this? Why does it really matter to you? Maybe it's a bit misleading, but I seriously doubt anyone purchasing from him believes they are getting a genuine item. As I stated above, it LOOKS pretty close to the real thing. THAT was the point. Better let Gibson, Fender, Jackson etc... know that Warmoth's doing the same thing. You missed the point. We're supposed to be woodworkers and musicians discussing a common passion. Show and tell.

no - you put 'PRS copy" :D

i just realised i have a guitar thats a firebird clone listed on my website as a firebird! i also use the term 'esquire' and 'SG' a lot - i have a whole section of 'inspired by classic designs' guitars

http://wezvenables.co.uk/GuitarsIB.html

i suppose i justify it by saying no-one will ever mistake them for the real thing, as i always make them a bit different - but its just a different shade of grey.

That Veena model has slightly different horns than musicman model. I donĀ“t know if its enough though. Pretty much same percentage of difference in guitar shape compared to what guys do at PG forum. Same body with different headstock.
