westhemann
Filling a void in the grain with medium CA...this is my high tech "upright holding jig"..only the best for me
westhemann
I know what you're thinking.."where is the headstock goat?" On this one I am doing a extra jumbo goat..using a natural knot in the wood for the forehead spot And horns and beard are out of this cool recon stone
westhemann
Goat head cut and ground.I believe that's it for the night
westhemann
I am thinking I should rub on the color coat to the body on this one so that the grain lines will transfer through, but I am not sure...I think some testing is in order
ScottR
I thought you were going to paint this....er....or is that what your are saying? SR
westhemann
Yeah, that's what I am saying.Trying different things to get the grain to "witness" through the white. So far I am not having any luck on scrap.I may have to change finishing products for something that sinks in better before curing
westhemann
Looks like I am just going to have to forget about witnessing grain lines.I just went through my old builds and the only finishes that will sink in that far before curing feel and look cheaper than i am willing to go. So if I am going to have to do a straight opaque finish,I think I want it black on the body to offset the light maple neck.
ScottR
So is the Tineo that finely grained, or is it the look of the paint sinking into the pores that does not appeal? SR
westhemann
or is it the look of the paint sinking into the pores that does not appeal? That part...BUT after sitting overnight one of the samples was successful..the one with just straight tint into straight conversion varnish....So it is still possible, but I threw out all of my tineo scraps in a cleaning frenzy after the V was completed so I am testing on limba...so the guitar will be a test..if it doesn't work satisfactorily I'll just level it and make a plain finish

westhemann
I don't usually do mock-ups,especially since the sanding is not even done, but I am bored and I can't do much while the epoxy is curing.I did something extra on this one,i tilted the pup routs to match the neck angle...I saw it on one of Wez' or RAD's builds and I think it is super cool.I am not using these pickups.. RestorationAD
Mmm... tilted pickups. Man they look good. I can't stand when the pickups don't follow the neck angle. Looks good so far. Let us know how the Tineo sounds as I am always looking for new woods.
westhemann
I'll let you know, but I would not bother with it again. It works easy enough but it is very plain and it isn't cheap So the goat...pretty sloppy this time.I used a dremel instead on the hand tools and i need to get better with it.But I still have a few accents to add by hand so hopefully it will draw the eye away from the sloppy routing.I am going to put teeth in this one and then the red eyes
westhemann
Yeah I think I need to go back to hand carving tools

RestorationAD
Smears cleaned...it ain't so bad...the beard did not seem to be so far away from the head when i glued it Black line for the mouth should be continued over the teeth even just a really small line would fix it. The teeth look like they are floating...
westhemann
I think i see what you are saying..at the top of the teeth you mean?
RestorationAD
I think i see what you are saying..at the top of the teeth you mean? yes. It doesn't have to be thick... just a thin black line. Defining the mouth line is important.
