GuitarMaestro
Hi! I want to build a Jem-style body from a one-piece body blank without top that has a great figure and stunning look, because I'll only give it a clear coat. What wood should I look at that is not too heavy and looks great? Any reccommendations? Thanks, MK!
daveq
Great figure, not heavy - I guess maple is out - right? What about Sapele? I don't know if it is commonly figured but I have heard many people like it's looks. Try GilmerWood I think they have some. They would also be a good starting place for browsing options. Since you want a one - piece (not two halves, right?) your choices will obviously be more limited.
krazyderek
redwood has miles of figured packed into 2 foot boards, it's really light i think, but the trade off is that it's really soft like basswood.. so make sure you put a really strong hard finish on it

GuitarMaestro
Thank you very much Litchfield. I'll look for the woods you recommended. Concerning the bigger piece on ebay: Thats very funny I just saw that board about half an hour ago and thought that it looks great. Unfortunately it is not thick enough for a guitar body and not long enough for making a two-piece body. Perhaps I buy it anway and use it for a drop top on some guitar.
