pauliemc
I got this one in a while ago, someone else had a go at a refinish job. Didnt go so well. Customer wants a total rebuild using his original neck. Obviously some household white paint here, But the stuff under it. the red, its kinda rubbery & resists paint strippers so its going to need some heavy sanding. No attempt to even get close to a passable quality. & its matte finish too. so it completly hides the fact thet there is a fore arm cut on this thing. Anyway its all coming off. The guy wants one of the jap rising suns I do. But hes a cool enough bloke so Im gona kick it up a step & do something a little less ordinary than just a single colour sun. Ill put stuff up as i go, Some of you might like whats going on to this. Bit of wood porn never hurt nobody

ScottR
The guy wants one of the jap rising suns I do. Speaking of those......whatever happened to that LP build with the rising suns you had going on here a year or so ago? I don't remember exactly, but it seems like it had some kind of issue you had to work out....and then it never came back You had to know I was going to bring that up. SR Actually thats the same guy who owns the scrapocaster. the finish on it got a bit mangled on the back from a big buckle he used to wear so ill have that back for a refinish aswell, but not for a few weeks. he said he added some colour to that one, reds, blues, ambers, greens & black. over the sun beams, with some sharpies ?? I rekon hes loosing it. But we will see. He thinks maby i can replicate it in stains. or just clean up the mess he made. There is a JEM on the go for him, a guitar version of this bass (finish wise)
ScottR
Oh well, it sounds like he's a good customer. He'll keep coming back too, if that's the way he treats his instruments. SR
pauliemc
CRAP !! I got the finish off of this one today. But the bottom area where the jack would go if it were a Les paul feels funny. Wood seems cooler than the rest to the touch, clammy, a but fluffy, can be easily marked with a fingernail & has what looks like a water stain around it. Its going into the drying room for 2 weeks. hopefully its just some moisture trapped from when it was refinished a while ago
pauliemc
OK. This one was a nightmare job. ended up in the drying room for about 8 weeks, then a fowl smelling anti fungal / rot treatmet. Then I had to remove & replace a LOT of wood before I could tackle the new finish. the original electronics & bridge were shot to living hell so I just scrped the lot. Replaced the bridge with a Gotoh, fitted Jazz bass pickups then replicated the original wiring with new pots & vintage style wiring. The guy dropped in today for a quick test fit. Check the balance & feel & all that. Then he wouldnt give it back Its a good thing I suppose. he digs it big time. I told em it needed to be dis-assembeled for polishing & then he could take it the weekend, but he likes the "fat chick cellulite ass" look & feel of it. It was in for a rising sun finish, I do a fair few of those. But I decided to go a little better than just paint on this one. Its cool when a customers answer to the question "how much creative licence do I have here to fook about ?" is "Do anything you want " So instead of paint I used Black Walnut & Hard Ash for the rays, Quilted Maple for the sun & a little dye to add a slight sunburst to the sun beams. Anyway, he gave it back for a few piks at least.
pauliemc
Couple more piks.
ScottR
Whoa! Paulie, Paulie, Paulie, you been holdin' out on us man. To quote a guy I admire a lot......that rising sun top is fookin awesome! I'm not exactly sold on the fat chick ass finish, but what are you gonna do, the customer wants a fat chick ass, give him a fat chick ass. Our Souls inc.
Thats just all kinds of fun, aint it ?!? I like the sun rays with the little flares along the edge too. Usually see one or the other, kinda neat how you combined the two. I'd pinch it back after a couple of months and polish it up better, but thats just me. Awesome re-fin . WezV
i think i would have been tempted to not let him have it till polished. just because people are gonna ask him where it was done and people will assume the rougher finish was your doing, not his idea
pauliemc
Glad we all approve (almost anyway) I rekon i will get it back for a polish. I have a guitar version of this under way for another guy. That one will be polished up nicely. When he see's what that ones like he will go for the polish. im sure of it.
