guitar2005
I'd like to try a fiberboard overlay on one of my next builds vs a wood overlay. What does Gibson use? Is it Micarta or something else? How do you glue it on? Simple wood glue?
westhemann
I use epoxy, but I should think wood glue would work just fine on paper based products.I buy the paper based stuff.
guitar2005
Is it a fiber based Micarta or something else?
westhemann
I don't know what "Micarta" is...I just call it phenolic.Basically it's resin impregnated into a substrate. It is available in several different substrates but I like the paper because paper comes from wood. I use it for cavity covers, but it would work fine for a headstock overlay.
westhemann
Just looked it up.Yes,Micarta is the same as what I use.
guitar2005
Well, there are a lot of different products that combine paper and resins that aren't Micarta like Formica.
westhemann
No,I looked it up.Micarta is what I use.Paper substrate grade X black
westhemann
http://www.professionalplastics.com/MICARTA That's not where I buy it though.Just a random site.Don't remember where I found mine. guitar2005
So you go with the paper grade stuff? I was thinking of selecting the linen/canvas grade stuff.
westhemann
Sure,if you want.Canvas is also a natural fiber and glues well with wood glue. The paper grade is plenty strong and is cheaper which is why I use it.I don't use it structurally, just as covers.Headstock overlay would be well within the scope of paper based though. It's not like you can tell it's paper based. It's just a plain black sheet.I use epoxy because it just seems like it would grab the resin better.I rough up the gluing surface a bit because it's not porous at all so I feel it needs a mechanical bond. maull
Why not take a stab at making it yourself. This guy did it and then used it to make a handle for a knife.
guitar2005
I really don't have time in my building schedule to start making Micarta. It would make more sense to just use a wood overlay if I were to make it myself and paint it black. I like the idea of the Micarta overlay. I'll try to see whether I can find some locally. Prostheta
They have also used black dyed Holly, although of course that is not the "fibreboard" you mean. It's an option if you have it to hand.
guitar2005
@ Prostheta: I was going to match the fretboard wood to the headstock wood but I think that a jet black fiber board will work better as its stable and the logo with contrast well over it. Prostheta
Definitely. I'm not sure of the exact reason why Gibson used Holly over LP headstocks. Perhaps it is because Holly takes dye well?
westhemann
That's all it is.Some woods take black dye really evenly.
