Popular Post lvrpool32
I had posted this with a bunch of other guitars in an earlier thread, but wanted to split this out on its own. Not a typical 335 as the body and sides are I piece of Black Korina, took a while to hog it all out. The back is carved the same as the top and I put the toggle switch on the top horn. neck is flame maple with a cocobolo fretboard and headstock veneer. Top is a rescued piece of "ambrosia" quilt, had a couple of cracks I had to stabilize, but had awesome natural colour. yesterday was finally nice enough to paint, and I kind of went with the seat of my pants with the colors....
Mr Natural
sweet dude. I must say I gasped when you said you were going to paint that top- I love the look natural- but you have done a fine job with that burst. Well done.
lvrpool32
thanks....with the cocobolo binding and fretboard the dark red burst seems to work better than the natural.
ScottR
I remember seeing that. You are going to show us it finished aren't you? SR
StratsRdivine
Stumped me on the Ambrosia. I had to look it up, and its evidently a type of maple. Since I am making sheets now of simulated figure, I am studying all I can on wood figure types, and species that it occurs in. I have been a wood nerd since high school, nearly memorizing the book, "Know Your Woods" since buying it in '85, but I have been out of woodworking for the past ten years, so anyone out there know of other species in which quilt figure occurs besides maple, mahogany, and Sapele (pommelle is close enough)? Also wondering what the market value is for 5A quilt in solid nowdays (prices seem all over the place, but around 175 for 2 sq ft top blanks). Great burst job. Is that gun sprayed or rattle can? " A "real" 5A quilted billet (20" long 6-7" wide, 1-3/4-2" thick) high street price is -$230-$250. I've seen some pieces listed as 5A or "exhibition grade" that where very poor and way over priced. You can find them on ebay now and then and get lucky with the price. The burst is all paint gun. Edited June 12, 2017 by lvrpool32
verhoevenc
Way too much coloring on that maple to call is 5A. 5A should be dammed white. Chris
