renablistic
I went to homedepot to see if they carried any hardwood (and to walk around the power tool section ) and all they carry is pine, and whitewood. This sucks. *** is whitewood?!?! is it hard or soft? I gotta find a local hardwood supplier...

Lex Luthier
*** is whitewood?!?! I think it's another name for Poplar. (and to walk around the power tool section) I'm going there today to look at spray guns.
lovekraft
It's like whitefish - except the Coney island variety - it's whatever they've hauled in.
MartinP
As much as I know Whitewood = Spruce (which is softwood)

Lex Luthier
Does it look like poplar? Soft-ish, light pale color, probably with ugly green or gray streaks through it.
Devon Headen
In the Melvyn Hiscock book he built the carved top guitar out of poplar. He said it is light, sounds good (which I find a little hard to believe), and is easy to work with. Anybody here ever tried it and have an opinion? skibum5545
I have heard that it has a punchy tone; i think it was used for early stingray basses. There was an earlier thread here. Scroll down and there's a lot of talk about poplar
renablistic
THANKS ALOT! This stuff is so cheap at Home Depot, I could make like 3 bods for 15 bucks or something like that! But what does "Punchy" mean, per sey? Like a bumping blues sound? (not smooth, but jumping at ya) cause that would be perfect.... THANKS AGAIN! -John
skibum5545
To be honest I'm not sure what punchy means. I just read that description somewhere, sorry!
Scott Rosenberger
Alot of the older Neck Thru Jacksons were made from poplar. I dont think it sounds good.
VanKirk
Some MIM Strats are made from Poplar. IMO, not as nice a tone as ash or alder but not bad for a cheap alternative.
renablistic
Some MIM Strats are made from Poplar. IMO, not as nice a tone as ash or alder but not bad for a cheap alternative. westhemann
it is a "poppy" tone...slightly percussive...heavy on the "attack" similar to alder, but not as deep
