nakedzen
I guess I'll give this a try next. Been slowly working on it. Nothing expensive or fancy. I'll wind the pickups myself, not sure what kind. Probably not the Fender original style. Pine body, flamed birch veneer top. Maple neck, padauk board. Tape and ca to stick the veneer onto mdf so it won't shift when I glue it on.
henrim
Looks like it’s going to be an another fine shedder!
nakedzen
It has come time to decide on pickups since I'll do the cavities next. Original has single coil Jaguar pickups, but I'm sort of leaning towards P90's. No idea if they sound good on bass. :d I guess we'll find out. Top routed flush and added binding channel.
nakedzen
Sanded back some brown on the top and did the pickup cavities.
nakedzen
First try with making inlays with the laser. Didn't really go as planned, should've done the fretboard too with outlines only, it started to burn a bit on the edges. I just filled those with sawdust and ca. Very delicate pieces, they were pictures of each aeroplane he had flown and they really looked recognizable to their models. Focusing and adjusting the strength of the beam are obvious things to do but if memory serves me right a layer or two of masking tape took care of the heaviest burning marks.
nakedzen
Yeah I was thinking if that would work. But it's a start, unfortunately I didn't have too much padauk to test on. I think just doing the outlines and then chiseling the rest would've been the best.
nakedzen
Starting to look like a bass. Tape is there so I didn't scratch it on the router table.
nakedzen
Testing out the look. Pretty odd looking. Now for a lot of sanding a reapplying dye ad nauseam.
nakedzen
Birch top is pretty porous wood, we'll see how many coats I'll need. Now 2 thin coats of Odie's.

Andyjr1515
This gets better and better. That binding is really going to set the top off.

The binding not only serves as protection for sharp edges, it also can draw the outlines to guide the focus to what's inside it.
mistermikev
that's a sharp sort of 'two tone' you got going on there on the fretboard. i like what you did visa vi yin yang on the inlay too. good on ya.
nakedzen
Thanks! I didn't really have any good ideas for the inlay, so I just went with bass/treble
nakedzen
Not much progress, but soon! I have almost all hardware, then just some drilling and done! Fretboard and frets installed. Went for a smoke sauna look for the back.
nakedzen
Movin on, hardware almost done. Needs holes for pots and switch, then I'll move to finishing the neck.
Bizman62
Heh, that must be a slayer metal bass! Looks like it has been played with fingernails pulled off and wrists slit.
nakedzen
That really wasn't intentional but I guess a superstrat is a superstrat. The white p90's will probably ease the edgy look a bit.
Bizman62
Superstrat, not a bass! I only saw four holes, not figuring out the outermost holes were covered by tuners! Blame (almost) bedtime and Scotch.
nakedzen
It is a bass! 30" scale bass VI style.
Bizman62
What's the matter with this world? Basses look like superstrats and have P90 pickups? No wonder an elderly fart like me gets confused. Four strings used to be plenty enough but what do they now have? 36 string basses...
nakedzen
Unless you're over 67, the 6-string bass is older than you are. 90's are an experiment, as is this this whole build to be fair. I'm planning to wire them as passives on their own and middle position would be active if I can figure out the wiring. The shape happened to be whatever template I grabbed first, could've been a tele too.
nakedzen
I had to give it a try on how it sounds before I take the neck off. Good news is it sounds absolutely massive unplugged. Bad news is the P90 sounds like a garbage fire. Extremely thin and scratchy. Not sure why but it's also very low output, it measures 10k DC.
