neckthru 7 string korina rhoads

Recommended Posts

the flame was the only reason i ever wanted to stain it. but unless someone can give me a better option to show off the flame and not my mistakes then its going to be just like every single guitar i own.....black. id like to know what other people think since you dont always see flamed korina.

You could inlay some stripes over the glue seams, if you route it carefully and put in the proper size filling wood then the imperfections could be completely hidden, and hey- if that doesnt come out so perfect either then you could paint it in the end to turn into your own masterpiece.

my artist friend told me she will paint it if i spray on a base coat. she is going over ideas as i type this. its probably gonna end up being mural like. from what she has already told me im going to like this option better. ill keep you guys updated and post some samples of what she might do on it.

its gonna probably be a toss up between naked chicks and norse mythology. you have no idea how hard of a choice that is for me to make. i have a feeling if i choose norse then im gonna end up having to inlay a vine inlay going up the fretboard to show off the tree of life motif. there would also be a celtic knot yggdrasil on the back. but if i choose naked chicks then i can go with no inlays. either way i dont think im gonna get away playing this one at church or school. plus i have no real use for this guitar on stage until next year so its cool for now because i have a feeling she is gonna take her time. so i guess its anyones go for now. so should it be naked goth girls or yggdrasil?

oh yeah, um, am i allowed to post the pics if it ends up being hot chicks?

dude, curtis. i was thinking the exact same thing the other day. me and my mom are gonna do that to my jem, only instead of comic books it was gonna be a background of some kind of cool wallpaper and have all my heroes pasted onto it, bursted around the edges, and then clear coated. steve vai did it with pictures from playboy. im gonna have tact and do my heroes. i got the inspiration from an issue of guitar world that had like the top 200 guitarists of all time all on the front.

i finished shaping the neck. its ultra thick right now. i may get it a bit thinner but i like a thick neck. once my pickup and electronics arrive im going to route the cavities, install the truss rod, add the fretboard, and do the finish.

the neck is going to to be sanded down some more, but i prefer a neck to be a little thicker than a les paul so its still going to be pretty substantial. its going to be a dark hunter green, i just wanted something that wasnt black. all my guitars are black and even though its my favorite color i think its time for a change. though i do have a danelectro that has glitter in the black paint.

Dark forest green is a cool idea. Maybe with a couple of dark maroon racing stripes running down the middle it could sort of break-up the color of the instrument a little, too.

I really want to build a Korina Rhodes, too. I love the feel and sound of Korina Vs and the way Rhodes-style Vs just sort of fit a little better.

yeah i have a feeling this is gonna be a better guitar than my last one because its a good combo and will definitly have some great sustain. if you dont care about white versus black than there is a guy on ebay who sells some great limba pieces that are in the midrange between the two colors and grain variances, but its been a while since ive seen him on there. he gets it for free and sells for extremely cheap because guitarists usually only want white or black and not a mix. ill pm you the guys handle on ebay and store name if you want it. i just have to look through my ebay history and find it. i love the shape too. its a bit easier to sit and play if you dont mind the ackwardness of having the neck that far to the left.

oh and the official finish is now dark hunter green with yellowish brown vines and light green leaves and purple/maroon flowers with an yggdrasil/norse motif. my friend is also gonna paint a hot faerie chick on the back just to make things a little more sexy, not that a solid korina rhoads with seven strings isnt already guitar porn in the first place, but shes kinda gonna be like a bomber girl for my band.

im almost ready to start on the case. i just bought a big sheet of hardboard. i need something to keep me moving and shaking while i wait for the pickup and wiring stuff. oh how the wait is killing me. i want this thing finished and in a coffin case by the time my next school term begins so i can play it at school.

That's gonna be a cool finish. I think the best part of a custom guitar is the finish and the artwork. Anyone can throw a Strat together from Warmoth parts, but making it really unique is tough.

I'll PM you sometime later this year for that Korina guy's eBay info. I gotta graduate from school first in May and rebuild my workshop with fancy new tools before I can build something new. Thanks for the offer, I'll definitely take you up on that at some point.

i hear ya on that one. im counting down the months until i leave school. once im out i can finally stop mooching off other peoples tools. my finances are everything left over from basic needs. i got really lucky finding that wood for so cheap because my guitar building experience is based on getting that little bit of extra cash scrimpin and savin. right now ive hit a bump though, tuners, new valves for my amp, or a ring for my girlfriend. it sucks having a life, a job, a girlfriend, a great hobby, pets, family, school, school band, church band, and hopefully a future gigging with my real band happening all at the same time. but this may have to be my last full build project for a while as im trying to get a job modding and doing repair work. but hey thats life. i cant complain this is the greatest hobby in the world and better therapy than you can buy. i never wanted a guitar when i started out, i just wanted something to do that i could enjoy. two builds later and im completely hooked. it really is addictive. its a great feeling knowing that youve accomplished something especially during hard times with school and work.

heres a much needed and long overdue update on my work.

so ive had a lot of time to plan some more because i havent been able to buy many parts or tools. i have everything now except tuners and ill have those within the next two or three weeks. its almost ready to go to paint.

IMAG0298.jpg

the fretboard isnt finished in this picture. i just layed it on top of the neck to show what it would look like. the pickup route was done with fences and the divets in the dge for the screws were done with a pillar drill. the holes are for a volume knob, a miniswitch, a tone knob, and a jack. i went with a chrome hardtail bridge and a dimarzio evo 7 as the pickup. the paint is probably either gonna be pearl white with black pinstripes or pearl red with black pinstripes

heres more pics

truss rod slot

back cavity

semi put together

please questions and comments are very welcomed

thanks man. that means a helluva lot coming from "the man" himself. those bevels are only about halfway done. i went at it with a rasp one day until i got tired and ive been working so much on getting the neck down a bit thinner that i havent had time to go at the inner bevels with my files and dremel yet. the bevel on the smaller "leg" of the v is a lot closer. its that long one thats giving me the trouble.
