  1. Yeah I think Holly can look pretty cool when used with other woods, like in a laminate neck or something, that way it really stands out. Cause it really is crazy how white it is. As for the kiln, I dont know much about the subject but it sounds like it might be a cool thing to try, seeing as your getting just about everything for free.
  2. I might have missed something, but whats the reason for those screws in the top? Gluing or something? Looks good, keep the pics coming.
  3. That looks sweet. I like how the grain makes like an S shape on the front. Stain and dye are different things. Stain is more opaque and covers the grain a little more, and dye is more transparent. I've never used a dye but i think it absorbs into the wood rather than sitting on top so it doesnt cover anything up.
  4. So do you think the lee valley saw would be fine with the Stewmac fretwire? Or would it get difficult? I've got this padauk board I want to do, which I guess is pretty hard as a wood.
  5. Wow thats really cool. The different kerf wouldn't make that much a difference would it? I mean it seems like a pretty small difference?
  6. I say keep the pickguard, it looks good. I think a black one would be real nice depending on what your finishing it with. Looks great though.
  7. No I dont think it has to be blue. I always thought like a turqoise green type thing would look good with that.
  8. Yeah my shape is actually pretty similar, and lacewood haha.
  9. So the tennon is just the same width as the neck?
  10. I just started my first build from scratch and I had a question. If the body shape was angled where it met the neck (set neck) could I do something like this: I want to do a kind of Les Paul looking neck joint but I want it to follow the angle of the body. Hope the pic makes sense Thanks,
  11. I was wondering if anyone out there's used oak for a neck? I heard that people dont generally use it cause its not very resonant. Cause I got an offcut I could use for a neck and I was just wondering if anyone here has done it?
  12. Great build! whats the design on the front? is it inspired by anything?
  13. That top is killer! Almost looks like a face or skull or something. Good lookin build.
  14. Welcome! That first pic looks like mahogany. Second pic, I was gonna say cedar but now I'm not so sure.
  15. I think it looks cool. IMHO the suede kind of throws me off (if it is suede). The darker brown or black, glossy leather (don't know if theres a special name for it), would look killer. Sweet job.
  16. Great swirl! I think theres just enough black, it looks good.
  17. Yeah I ended up kind of answering my own question with this one, cause I got to measure a 21 fret strat neck. Distance from nut to 22 is 465.947 mm, according to Hiscocks book, and to the heel I measured as more like 465.5 mm. So pretty close. Thanks anyway.
  18. I'm building a 21 fret strat neck, what I need to know is the distance from the nut to the heel of the neck. I'm guessing it's the same as the distance to the 22nd fret, is this correct? Thanks
  19. I've found some stuff at Benjamin Moore as far as grain fillers, sanding sealers, etc. Also make sure if you go to Canadian Tire looking for sandpaper that your looking in the right spot. Because at my Canadian Tire, theres one area with sandpaper that goes to about 800, and then (like low end fuzz said) theres the automotive section that has the finer stuff. For a long time it didn't occur to me to look in there, even though I had been in that aisle more than a couple times. Good Luck
  20. I really like Tommy Emmanuel for acoustic stuff. Also Chet Atkins, really good music. Good Luck
  21. I bought some of their neovins, I have yet to put them in yet though. I've heard they're pretty good for pickups. I've bought some other stuff from them like a bridge and its good stuff.
