  1. tell me about it.i bought a new routerfrom harbor freight recently because i wanted a little extra horsepower and speed for the bubinga i was routing, and the damn thing kicks so hard when turning off and on it is dangerous...it kicked right into my template and ruined the template and severely gouged the top of my guitar body....luckily the gouge was only about 1/8" deep,so i just thickness sanded past it...but i put that router away and i won't use it again
  2. what he is saying is that he was told that headstock trussrod adustment was impossible with a floyd locking nut...which is completely false... it can be done either way
  3. mmm...well that is bad news then because of all of my guitars with floyd locking nuts, some i built and some i bought...every single one of them adjusts at the head
  4. ummm...laden means "full of"..maybe you meant "reality challenged" or "reality deficient"? because if his mind is "full of reality",then of course he would know bacon comes from pigs.. but here is one for you...is bacon made from pigs or are pigs made from bacon?
  5. well...let me hit you with this one....fretted instruments have no "note limitations"...any note you can hit on a fretless, you can hit more accurately by pulling bends on a fretted instrument... but this is meant to answer his rhetorical question...but no,it does not work for the opposite side...my wish is only to point out the fallacy in the "i decide the notes, not my frets" statement...which i have done...there is no note to be hit that is not already available..and everything is derived from what has come before...the chello headstock, the long upper "horn" common on many custom basses that extends further up the neck...it may very well be a fine looking instrument if you share those tastes...but don't claim it more original than the ...it's just insulting to everyone who prefers the tasteful designs already implemented...it implies that everyone else is just lacking in imagination... when i build, iut is to mke a guitar "work" better...better fret access, straighter neck, better hardware and electronics...it's all good, but one way is not better than another, just different. anyway,i spoke my piece...i won't bother this thread again...hope the build works out for you
  6. use the headstock that you think looks the best, but thin it down (front to back) to 1/2" instead of the normal 9/16" ,use the lightest tuners you can find(sperzel has some open back tuners desighned to be light),and make the neck fairly thin, and it will balance fine...or it should anyway.
  7. to develop a base of working knowledge to branch out from.there are still countless lessons to be learned from doing what has been done before...people have walked for as long asthere WERE people, yet the first steps we take in life are always important. in my experience, most guys new to guitar building talk about fretless because they are secretly afraid of the accuracy needed....they don't feel confident they will "measure up"
  8. like russ said...you need to thin it with acetone
  9. someone else may disagree with me...but this is not pin-worthy...there is very little building information on any of these sites...it's just a "look at how cool this guy's guitars are" thread. there is always someone who wants to pin everything...sorry...it won't be me
  10. i like the idea of the green... you know...drak did a lacewood veneer on a warlock once and it really came out nice...i don't recall what color translucent he used...but he did his black/sand back thing on it...you might ask him about it
  11. well..i must say that is the first 8 string i have ever seen that made me want to play it... it also makes me think about building an 8 string explorer...like you,i think i would not even be able to play it... but let me run something by you...if i WAS to build one myself,i would most definately use a 26.188" scale, use a set of 009-011-016-024-032-042-054-065,tune the 7th string to C,and go from there...,having the #8 string tuned for bar chords and the rest standard.i think that would give the most useable range... i think you could really write some intricate metal with that...IF you could get the neck comfortable...i think i would go with the tightest string spacing possible and i think i would only go with 22 frets...with that extra range on the high string that tuning would give you,who needs 24?
  12. http://projectguitar.ibforums.com/index.php?showtopic=1723
  13. i don't think the guy was a member here...if you read the gallery,it says "henry"(i can only assume that means henry kaiser) had it cast by somebody in l.a. frank ford wrote the commentary.i don't know...i can't say i am a fan of it...i can honestly say that i have seen much, much worse...but none of those appeal to my senses
  14. yeah...i always liked that ktl guitar...and that is also the first thing i thought when i saw the one on that spalt site... when i see a "custom guitar "site with nothing but drawings of different models i always think it's a wannabe site...you HAVE to build some prototypes
  15. no reason to pin it...most of these are just links to pictures and galleries. add the topic to your "favorites" in your browser...then you can always find it
  16. it sands down like a clear finish...you follow the same grit schedule
  17. all i see are a bunch of cartoon pictures of very generic instruments...sorry what's inventive?it's very average except that one side of the pickup can be slid around
  18. if there is an apocolypse i am going to be repopulating the earth with ya'lls womenfolk while ya'll are lame-ing it up in your nerdy little woodshops...
  19. eh,forget about it...computer troubles...all i can tell you is you have to experiment alot to get the sound you are looking for...lamb of god just uses line 6 stuff...i can't get a decent sound from line 6 for anything
  20. emg 81 pickups...most of those are through a les paul studio... i eq-ed out the mids...personally i think you can get any sound you want out of the vamp and the eq in the software... give me a minute and i will load a much more complex sound for you...
  21. don't listen to them prostheta...i much prefer the sound of the miced and monitored drums...imo it's the only way to truly get the proper kick drum sound anyway guitar center has this new electronic set that you can monitor and play at anyvolume you wish, and the drummer i saw playing it claimed it felt very natural too... can you imagine being able to turn down and practice at a non-headache inducing volume?i mean..the drums themselves made noi sound...just through the speakers. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Rol...-Set?sku=449925
  22. well...the easiest way is to just wrap the battery in foam and put it in the control cavity
  23. the best luck i have had has been with those cheapo little behringer vamp things...i can never even get close with a head and cab. http://westhemann.com/final%20after%20fade-version%202.mp3 http://westhemann.com/my%20music/new%20mus...pr%20redone.mp3 http://westhemann.com/my%20music/new%20mus...high%20gain.mp3 all done with vamp...but i still have to get off my ass and lay down some decent tracks...and find a drummer but i think these sound pretty natural.but then again i am no audiophile... if you like the sound, say so and i will tell you exact settings...it is two rythm tracks, both completely different
  24. that "if" is what makes it all conjecture. i do not think laying the guitar on it's back stretches the neck...rather i believe the strings tend to bend a hair towards the ground, and when it's on it's back, you lose a hair of your string height in the middle of the neck....see what i mean? it is highly unlikely that the small effect of gravity on the headstock is going to counter your string tension to any quantifiable measure... but in truth i set my guitar up in playing position merely because i am playing it when i do the setup. but theories can be argued all day...practicality is all that matters to me...and in any practical sense,a set of tuners will not bow your neck
