  1. not to sound flippant, but you can't really believe the few grams of weight you are talking about is going to do anything at all to counteract the string tension?seriously?
  2. you are breaking jjust about every forum rule we have with that post #1...convert all of those images except the first one into links...#2take the image and the link out of your sig #3...read the rules in the announcements section.. take care of it on your own or me or one of the other modfs will do it ourselves...i am going to fix the images right now...if you don't change your sig before i get back on,i will do that too
  3. that theoiry was never put forward that i recall...weight of headstock has nothing to do with the straightness of your fretboard
  4. wow that is a good picture...i bet you could copy that to disc, take it to kinkos, and have them blow it up to the proper size for you
  5. umm,yeah...you should know that if you played on the same stage as exodus then you are my hero i would really love to hear that story...
  6. yeah..i wasn't saying the video was all that good,i don't even think metal videos should exist,as it was more underground than that in my day,but it shows at least some of the abilities of those two guitarists...(rick hunolts is a bad dude too) the vocalist for exodus?well,i love his voice...he is the epitome of sarcasm, which is exactly what he wants to be...i think he is perfect for exodus..but remember too that they have been around since '81? i think...and back then to be taken seriously in metal you had to take yourself seriously...it was not nearly as accepted as what it is today...trust me on that.... i remember a truckload of rednecks pulled over and beat the crap out of the guitarist for dangerous toys back in the 80s...just because he was walking down the street with long hair...and you couldn't ask for a nicer guy...i am not into glam metal, but when he was in the clubs i was at you could see the crowds thronging around him,and he was totally down to earth...really seemed to appreciate being noticed. my point is...those old school guys put up a heavy front...it's a leftover from days gone by...but it IS a video...and thrash was always about looking mean...look at the photos in "kill em all" if you want a laugh...i love watching kirk hammett trying to look mean... but yeah..that song in that video is not nearly the best work on the album...but it shows that those dudes really know their instruments..i love the way they swap leads in some of their songs...they go back and forth like slayer, but the lead work is much more structured
  7. www.routerbits.com they ship fast and they have a large selection of template bits..as a side note, those stewmac templates are worthless...they are too thin,so the bearing doesn't make full contact and the second a bearing sticks, the acrylic melts...i friggin hate that...so now i use 3/4" mdf for templates...
  8. just so you know..i read the entire thread before i ever posted...so i am not going off half cocked...i know there were disagreements because a luthier twisted off a sacred guitar headstock and cut the neck off to remove it more easily...it did not surprise me at all that a few of you questioned his ability as a luthier...because you had no idea who he was...setch's word would have been good enough for me,but ya'll thought you spotted a hack...again,that is not surprising... what DID surprise me is your last post when you attacked his post line by line, making fun of everything...and there is nothing to even make fun of...it's just wierd, and not what i expect from you...i thought you would have been all for the outstanding repair that was performed...i mean...itwas just pure genius to cut off the original headstock front to preserve the original aint and logo...i mean COME ON...that is star quality invisible work there...i wish i had thought of it...and to be honest it makes me want one of thoase dime guitars... anyway...i am just embarressed for you...i thought you were all about the clean work
  9. well..i watched it..but i just don't really like the guitar style... i mean...it's good for what it is...it's just a little too "smashing pumpkins" for me.i prefer my metal a little bit more "trick"...to bring back a word from the 80s
  10. it's no secret...i mean,i called litch and asked him to build me one...but he quoted me $2.39 plus tax and i thought that was a bit steep...because he wanted me to front the cost of the food coloring
  11. i have tone to the bone baby...my bone is toned...ummm...yeah actually it's not the amount of gain,it's the type i am so finicky about...i probably use only slightly more gain than randy rhoads, but somewhat less than zakk wylde... more around the "exodus" level of gain...for me it's about the percussive attack but i never feel a lck of sustain in any guitars i have...but they are all neck through and set neck...so that may have something to do with it..i have no dead spots to try and counter
  12. what i am getting at is certainly there is a better looking way to add mass to a headstockrather than that big ugly fat finger thing...i wasn't clear in this thread, but in the last one i expounded more. but i ALWAYS go with a ighter headstock, because in my opinion the benifits of a better balanced guitar on your back(i always play standing up...unlike most oof you,i know) far outweigh any slight sustain benefits from any extra mass
  13. i have heard strapping young lad...they are good, just very basic...thanks for the info though. have not heard the other bands though
  14. *** is wrong with you ,crafty?that post is completely innappropriate and bitter...and for no reason except that you are frequently bitter.. want a two week vacation?post another one and ye shall recieve. very nice work deizel...and a "haXor" is the nerd way of saying hacker
  15. stewmac radius block, homemade flat sanding block, sanding sponge, and sandpaper. and a dremel for polishing read the fretting tutorial on www.projectguitar.com
  16. oh yeah...my grandpa was more like a dad to me...no dad around,so i went to hang out with grandpa while he worked...he was retired as long as i remember, but he had rental property,a backhoe business on the side, and was always doing something that i could help him with.he was around until i was about 21 or 22,then he went to live near my uncle(his son) in a rest home, then died at 99 y/o when i was about 30.
  17. i said in a similar post recently that i hate the idea because it serves no purpose....i also said then that i would put a metal allen wrench holder on te back of the headstock first...because at least it serves a purpose if you really believe that godawful thing works, why not just buy heavier tuners?a set of nice heavy schaller locking tuners would no doubt make the same "effect"(i say believing there is no effect to replicate)
  18. nobody goes through evey thread...(i used to but don't anymore) i think drak prefers the finishing section... seriously, poster....send a p.m. to drak and ask him for his suggestions.he is very helpful
  19. i have a support thingy for the neck after it is already shaped... at the absolute least you really need to have the taper cut and completely sanded to 220 and straight before you fret.but i would worry that the neck would move after shaping just enough to take my fretboard out of true... this is the complete order i go in....laminate neck pieces together, plane and join completely square, attach fretboard, cut neck taper and headstock shape, cut neck profile, sand the taper perfectly straight, sand headstock to finished specs, drill tuner holes, shape neck to finished profile with rasp and sand it to 220,retrue my fretboard, recheck the slots to see if they are still the right depth, clean the slots and fret that bad boy... fretting is dead last except for fitting the nut and installing the tuners..but i have reshaped necks after playing the guitar for a while...with strings still attached and tuned to pitch...
  20. it is unwise to do that without knowing the size of that particular truss rod...BUT i would use a rasp and do it anyway...only because i cannot stand a thick neck. i would not take it thinner than 7/8"(top of fret to back of neck) but i only say that because if i can't get a neck that thin,i do not care if i ruin it...if you care that you might ruin it,then don't do it... other options to make a neck feel thinner more safely? take the frets out, thin the fretboard down to 3/16" in the middle, and reslot the board and replace the frets with smaller frets...but you really need to be more familiar with the process before doing it...which i think you are not,or else tyou would not be asking... best bet is probably to find a luthier of some sort.
  21. there is nothing more exciting than a pencil sketch...except maybe an actual progress pic or something
  22. oh...by the way...the mod will be worth it.putting that new hardware and electronics in will make it a very nice sounding guitar, most likely....and if you decide you don't like it later on....well...like was already said, you have great hardware to build one from scratch with.. i can't see your pics...is it a strat or something else?te strat is the one i was in love with
  23. the chrome one has a smoother finish than the black one...way sharper looking
  24. my grandpa turned boilermaker after the war...apparently welded alot of water towers around texas...he wasn't a big talker though like me...so the specifics are a bit fuzzy...he was senile by the time i certified as a welder...so then he wanted to talk about it...he just kept telling the same stories over and over...then when he figured out what he was doing he stopped talking any more than he had to...he was afraid he might say something he had just said a minute before...senility is a bitch...
  25. my mom's dad repaired ships in wwI or II...he was unclear which war it was...i only know it was in galveston
