  1. that's irony for you.my first guitar from scratch was a carved top...and my next build will be a steinberger clone with emg pickups. it will be my first attempt at inlays though. from your article rhoads...it looks as if i should buy some honduran mahogany from the cabinet shop i get it from before the prices go up.if they haven't already
  2. i have a roll of rosin core radio shack solder.seems to work just fine.
  3. maiden you really have a knack for this sort of thing.i am quite impressed
  4. whatever do you mean?i have made much longer posts than this one in the old slam topic...and they were just as useful in their own way
  5. cut all your 6 foot pieces at 42",this will leave 30 " left over then rip all of them down the middle of the 5" face...this leaves 2 pieces at almost 2 1/2" wide(of course) now you get all the 42 " pieces together, and same thing for the 30" pieces. the longer pieces are long enough for neck throughs, and the shorter ones for bolt on and set neck, they will have enough room for headstocks as well. but see now, here is the strange part.you have the wrong size of stock optimally(1/2"),because for a six string you really need a total width of 2 1/4" at least, but you can do a couple of things...one of which i like better than the other. the one i do not really prefer the thought of. take 4 of those pieces with complimentary opposing grain, and glue them side by side(2 1/2" faces glued together) with 1/8" laminates of another wood in between all of them(possibly ebony?maple?depends on the color contrast you want).this makes a 7 piece laminate neck, which can be very nice if done with aesthetics in mind.you may have to adjust the thickness of the 1/8" strips if your wood faces being glued together are not already planed flat. here is the thought i like best.buy some 8/4 (1 1/2")flamed rock maple, and some 1/4" bocote(all 2 1/2" wide faces, like the other wood) and use the flame maple in the center, with the mahogany on the outside(opposing grains on the mahogany now)with the 1/4" bocote pieces in between all of them.this is what i would do presto...5 piece gorgeous neck blank ready to cut, thick enough for a neck through with no angle and about a seven degree headstoock tilt(depending on whether the headstock is six inline or 3+3) or you could do both...and mix and match laminates as you wish to make different contrast and such.by itself, that mahogany you have is completely the wrong size(1/2"),but with other woods for lamiates,it would be great. there re alot of things you will have to think through before cutting.but hopefully i have given you some ideas to springboard off of. by the way, turning all the woods sideways like this and glueing the faces together makes the grain run in effect quartersawn...and this is how i have made ALL of my necks, except i use 4/4 lumber and make 3 piece necks http://fullservesite.com/westhemann/neck%2...haping_0002.jpg http://fullservesite.com/westhemann/neck%2...haping_0003.jpg http://fullservesite.com/westhemann/neck%2...haping_0005.jpg http://fullservesite.com/westhemann/neck%2...%20rod_0005.jpg http://fullservesite.com/westhemann/carved...%20set_0004.jpg can you see what i mean through these pics?on the last pic the neck is not all the way visible, but you can JUST make out that it is a 3 piece
  6. well i will admit...just because i see a construction grade plumber doing it that way does not make it right.but they did completely sand and clean the ends and the fittings before putting them together. i guess i could ask the foreman overseeing that crew about it monday...all he ever does is watch me hang steel anyway.
  7. Yeah, I read the instructions for installing them, but it do you think it is worth it to have 81/85 instead of HZs? ← as i and everyone else already said in this topic months ago...yes the active line of emg pickups are so different from the hz pickups as to be not similar at all. HZ pickups are very poor
  8. no.you have to replace all the electronics in total. hz pickups are passive and have a completely different set of quick connects and pots than the active line does.
  9. i have bought a carvin neck through blank,a bolt on neck, and a carvin guitar.all were great quality.
  10. WHOA BUDDY!!! bit of both....it is VERY important that the neck still remain centered and that it points in the right direction...do NOT shave only one side
  11. now how does this happen when, during most soldering, you only touch the solder to the part being heated, not the tip. i know in my explanation for how i do pot wiring i hit it to the tip first, and in that case you may be right...but i never have that joint fail...and i know what a proper adhesion looks like. i am not saying "don't use flux" because i have never used it...it may very well help, and i will have to ty it.i use the rosin core myself because,as a welder,at makes sense to me,since mig wire comes flux core so that you don't have to use gas sheilding. in the case of welding, all the flux does is create a pocket of sheilding gas around the weld while it is being made, preventing hydrogen bubbles in the weld from atmospheric air.i was under the impression that soldering flux works on the same principle.are you saying it does not? i was watching plumbers solder copper pipe yesterday with propane torches.they would heat the connection, melt the solder on the joint, and THEN wipe it with paste flux.why is this,if not to protect it while cooling?
  12. i hear good things about those.i plan to get one myself are you sure that is what you meant to say?an iron is the way to go in a small space such as a control cavity.just make sure it has about 35 watts. soldering takes practice.and forget about THAT tech.that guy is clueless you need a magnifying lens that you can put on your head...not just a glass
  13. shave the body...leave the neck alone or else you could end up with a visible difference along the length of the string. BUT your problem may be due to paint in the neck pocket...how much too wide?just a hair? do it neatly...you want a tight fit
  14. that's what it sounds like to me.violence and an end to bowel movement privacy are not known side effects of pot now if he got high and ate all your potato chips and ranch dressing...you can blame the pot for that
  15. at least it is harder to spell than "slobber"
  16. i think all guitars should come with a case included in the price...cases are cheap enough for manufacturers to get. i would never sell a guitar without a case if it was to be shipped.person to person, yes
  17. still can't...that would be "slobbering" i use a 35 watt iron for everything, including grounding to pots.it takes tecqnique, but i make it work... i get the iron as hot as it will get, then melt solder to drip onto the pot, close to an edge...then i put the iron in the puddle of solder until the pot gets hot enough for the solder to melt into it(you can see this happen, with experience) then i solder my grounds to that puddle of solder
  18. i read this...time and time again, every time this is brought up.this is no argument...this is conjecture. IF it is illegal(i don't know if it is or not,but for the sake of the argument),then it is just as illegal whether or not you are ever found out. this is civilization...try living like it sometime.
  19. ups and fed ex have both been good to me...with one exception when ups was one day late but the ups guy knows my house and knows where to leave my packages, and always leaves them wrapped in plastic away from the rain.
  20. get it at universaljems.com second question...i don't know...i doubt it..but why does it matter?
  21. i agree...and then someone gets a nice lp and you get alot of practice.but as you don't intend to sell it...i would just take it in for a professional refretting, and still buy those grizzly kits.
