  1. The trem arms from the 50th anniversay strats don't have the plastic tips on the end, if that's any help.
  2. I also said I hadn't played the Randall. But my initial post was poorly worded, and I apologize. I was wondering what Randall's reputation was for tube amps, or if anyone on the forum had played this amp. Basically, my question is: Is the Randall MTS RM50B a quality amp? Is it a "better" amp than a Traynor YCV40T? Am I getting a good deal on the Randall? Musicians Friend dosen't have the RM50 in stock, so I can't find a price comparison. I apologize if my post was confusing. Thanks, Matt
  3. Hey, I'm in the market for a new amp, and I need to figure out what I really want, and if I can afford it. One dealer has a Randall RM50 tube amp. It's a 50-watt combo with a 12" Celestion. Now, I know that Randall's Solid State stuff is supposed to be quite nice, but I've been telling myself that all-tube is the way to go. Is this a decent amp? I haven't played it yet, as this guy's shop is a bit of a far drive from my house. He wants $500 CDN ($400 US) for it. My brother bought a Godin bass from the fella a few weeks ago, and he seems to be quite willing to bargain. Another local dealer has a Traynor YCV40T, Traynor 40 watt combo with a pair of 10" Celestions. I plugged into this one with a bunch of different guitars, and it was just dreamy. Everything I really wanted and a little bit more. Not to mention a Canadian company. This shop wants about $750 CDN ($600 US). But I know the guy who runs the shop, and between me and my dad, we've bought a LOT of stuff from him (A drumkit, 2 other amps, 2 guitars, and a keyboard) in just this last year. But he seems less willing to move on his prices in general, he's just not an awful great salesman. Tremendous fella though. On a side note, a guy I know has a Fender Stage Lead II he may be looking to sell, probably around $250 CDN, but it's old, beat up, and cheesy 80's SS. Which amp would you choose? Thanks a bundle, Matt
  4. I think the angled TOM may be throwing you off. The pickups are parallel and perp to the strings, from the looks of things.
  5. What kind of effect would that have on the pickups? The magnets, that is. I believe GodinSD did something like the LP Supreme with his guitar, didn't he? Just shove all the electronics in through an oversized rectangular jack hole?
  6. I'm sitting here with my beloved Norman acoustic on my lap, wondering, "what's an awesome song to play on a twelver...?" What songs do you guys like that sound better/best with 12 strings? If anyone says Stairway they're dead. I'm not kiddin.
  7. I've been spending more time on ebay than is probably healthy, and I've been noticing some interesting looking trem's on a few older MIJ Strats, both Fender and Squier. They're a two point trem with fine tuners, and usually with a locking nut. Does anyone have a story about these things? They look cool, but a little weired. A pic of one on a Squier...
  8. I second this. None of the info in Jason's book is really that helpful. This is the best site I've seen on the topic, http://mywebpages.comcast.net/skgs/sk/winding.htm
  9. Danelectro Black Paisley: Liquid Metal Awesome pedal, and cheap!
  10. Talk to your school music teacher about chord theory, and consturction of chord progressions. Go to Musictheory.net and download the interval trainers. Getting to know how chords and scales fit together is an incredible advantage for a songwriter. It seriously makes writing sooooo much easier. All of a sudden you can be humming a melody, and you just know what chords you should put under it. Of course, that WILL eventually come naturally just from playing, but you have to spend a lot of years not doing anything but playing guitar. Experience without education is not nearly as efficient as experience with education. Take a D5 powerchord and a C5 and adapt them to the second riff. D5 C5 ------------------- ------------------- ------7------5---- ------7------5---- ------5------3---- -------------------
  11. Yo! So I wake up this morning, more tired than an aging sheepdog (I'd gone away for the Maritime Musicfest the day before, saw the McGill University Jazz Band, they were amazing ) rushing to get to practice for the school musical (West Side Story ). I thought it was going to run from 10 AM until 6 PM, but everyone was leaving as they finished their parts. (It was the first Vocal run-through with the Orchestra). So I call my drive, to ask them to come early. They can't get in for a while, so I tell them to pick mme up at the local music store, not too far from the high school. Me and a few of my buds walk up the road, we split when we hit McDonalds. Anyway, I continue on to the music store, and bump into a few more of my friends. Unbeknowest to myself, the shop was celebrating Gibson days! I live in a smaller community, and most of the guitars that this shop sells are lower-end imports, so this was a really big thing in the town. I walk in, and we browse around. Then my buddy tells me I should enter the draw that the shop is having. I stroll over to the counter, drop my name in the box, and walk away. After a few minutes, Dave Gunning (local celeb, plays folk/celtic rock) walks in to make the draw. We all line up to watch, and Dave fiddles around with the ballot box. Finally, he pulls a ballot out and says "Matt Brown", which is me. Anyway, my buds all jump up and cheer, and I walk up. I know the shop owner reasonably well as I spend a lot of time in there, and very seldom buy anything. Anyway, I won a free Epiphone Special-II in Heritage Cherry Sunburst!!! I take the guitar, shake hands with the whole shop, walk up to the Gibson Guy and say "Thank you Gibson Guy", and walk out of the shop. I spent about 20 minutes in that shop, and had absoluty no idea that anything was going down. Free stuff is so amazing when your not expecting it!
  12. Hmm... Well, on an average humbucker the two sets of poles share only one magnet, correct? And in the case of your DiMarzio, wouldn't the metal plate conduct between the two coils, magnetizing both sets of poles anyway? If so, then wouldn't this have the same effect as what I'm proposing? As I see it, my way would have 2 reverse polarity (correct terms?) coils sharing one magnet, and sitting right on top of each other. Theoretically correct? I'm just thinking out loud with my limited knowledge of electronics, so if I'm wrong correction would be appreciated. I don't want to go ripping open pups if I don't really know what I'm doing! Thanks guys!
  13. Hey guys! I've got a little black Korean Squier Strat sitting around that wants electronics tinkering, and I've been planning to rewind the pups. But I just had a though about the possibility of taking the single coils and transforming them into stacked pups. Is it as simple as putting a divider in the middle of the coil, winding the two halves in opposite directions, then wiring it up like a humbucker? Quick Photoshop mockup Is that all there is to it?
  14. Ohhh... Why did Ovation stop making solidbodies? Why? My uncle had a Deacon once upon a dream. He sold it, and now he has a Acoustic\Electric Ovation, I'm not sure what model though. It's an American made model from a while back. I love Deacons and Breadwinners. It's kind of surprising that you don't see more of them being built on here.
  15. Godin necks are, to my knowledge, hand finished lacquer. Godin makes StewMac's necks. I just put one on my project, (almost finished), and it smokes . Canadian guitars rule.
  16. I have a Daneletro Black Paisley Liquid Metal stompbox, but it hasen't been getting much use, as I've been playing mostly blues lately. It can scream pretty good. Anyone know much about it? I left that out on purpose, hoping I'd get lot's of links to crazy stuff, like your KoaDaddy. My current amp is a Fender Sidekick Switcher, a solidstate from the 80's. It's got a pretty nice crunch channel.
  17. Hey guys! I've come to a point where my fingers itch for a 24-fret, Floyded (Or Kahlered), overwound humbuckers, pointy headed axe of doom... And a headache-inducing stompbox or two... What's the best Shred\Metal guitar I can get for the price, and some effects that some of you have experience with? Go crazy! Thanks,
  18. *Gently massages the heat vent on the side of iBook* I always laugh when everyone at school complains about how trashy their computers are. Stuff that works right is awesome, ain't it?
  19. Lookin' sweet. Did you have to move the bridge further up the body to account for the fretboard ending so far up? That LP is awesome too. You do pro work man. Feel proud.
  20. They can only ship via ground within the US. Thanks all the same though. The forum ooks promising.
  21. Hey, I'm at the point in building where I need to figure out my finish. I've got a beautifully grained ash body, and I want to do a traditional 2-tone brown sunburst lacquer. My question is: Can I use spray cans and regular stain to do this finish? Is spray lacquer compatible with a furniture\wood stain(eg. Minwax) Can any reccomend what to look for in a product, or a particular brand? Can I do this and have it look semi-professional? Thanks,
  22. This isn't one of those Teisco's, is it? I guy I know has something that looks remarkably like that. His has 2 pickups and a transparent pickguard. Also has a sticker the says "Dana" on the headstock. That tailpeice is a kind of vibrato/tremolo. There's a spring under the bolt that sticks out, and you could probably fit a bar to it. Bigsby-esque, I think. It's also quite small, in case you haven't noticed. Almost half size.
  23. Yeah, a friend of my dad's is a cabinet maker. I've used his shop for a project, and it seemed that most of his work was done in birch. I suppose if I laminated it could be a fine neck. I can get the furniture grade stuff cheap, so I may end up using it. I guess I'll figure out the tone on my own.
  24. Searched, couldn't find any specifics. Is it done? Anyone have experience with it as far as tone? Thanks
