  1. boring? nowt boring about this build - if you don't want it I'll pm you my address.. I'll happily take it off your hands.... one thing i will say..... I think it's about time you were putting your stamp on them - ie your OWN headstock design and name or logo - your builds are now too accomplished for you not to - you should be proud of your builds especially the Explorers - fine art level. think about it.....
  2. Hey!, watch it, smart guy! that'll be a "No" then......
  3. hey - you've got a big star stuck to the front of your car!!
  4. GOTM entry methinks? - go on - ya know ya wanna!! Swirl remover? that finish looks like glass!!!
  5. i used Tung Oil & Bri wax on my build.... no probs. Open pored mahogany too. I put a heavy coat on, left it an hour or two & wiped the excess off then left it overnight. then I just wet & dry'd it with the Tung Oil up to 2000 grit leaving an hour or two in between. I then left it ~48 hrs & then Bri waxed it. Buffed it up by hand & got a lovely satin sheen.
  6. love the orange - reminds me of my 1st Strat - i resprayed that neon orange after seeing a DY RG. went out side to put another coat on & the sun had come out - i was like AAAARRRRRRGGGGHHHHH!!!! my eyes!!!! lol should never have parted with that geetar.... never mind tho' - i payed £15 for it s/h & beat up, fixed her up & used it for 6 years as my main squeeze & then sold it for £120... only 6 stringer i've ever parted with & now wish I hadn't
  7. you've misunderstood..... it's a quilt maple top which is getting stained/dyed, i need a suitable clear-coat to go over it that will reduce the amout of UV making it thru to the stain/dye layer thus bleaching/fading the colour. although the guitar will see plenty of daylight as it will be played often it will NEVER be left in direct sunlight. I just need a clear that will reduce the risk of it fading quickly
  8. ok ..... let's rephrase it then as I already understood that nothing is completely UV RESISTANT, let's say UV RETARDENT thanks for your input so far guys, I'd never even thought about auto-clear being UV retardent even tho' i'd used it on solid colours before. I've got a build ongoing thats gonna be stained & i don't want the colour to fade
  9. just think of Gollum.... "Burns us, burns us it does.." lol : there's also a scene in "Apocalypto"....... AAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!! when I was at school we went on an outdoor activity week, skiiing, hiking, orienteering etc. one of the lads came back one day complaining of a groin strain. one of the other guys threw him a can of "Ralgex" (kinda like Tiger Balm but in a spray can) & said "here - try this!" basically taking the p***, not expecting him to actually use it. we all stood there open mouthed as he used it not just liberallly but excessively. and then we waited...... he spent quite a while in the showers....... I think the rest of us strained more muscles thru' laughing......
  10. just as well you din't scratch your balls then......
  11. Hi all, I'm going to need some UV resistant clear soon & wonder if any UK (preferable) members can recommend (from experience) a local supplier/brand, I'm asking for UK/Euro members input because of international shipping restrictions so offshore suppliers/brands will probably be no-go. price is not really an issue as I would prefer to just finish the guitar once..... ie do it right not twice. thanx in advance... sb
  12. So you tried to solder a bullet casing? What happened? Was there still powder in it? well - my brother gave me a bullet - he said he'd pulled the projectile out with pliers, poured the powder out, put it in a vice & set it off with a hammer & nail & then rinsed it out with water. foolishly I believed him & didn't do anything further myself. soldering iron on the end of the casing to tin it ........ BANG!!!!! couldn't hear, couldn't see, face was stinging, if you've seen Saving Private Ryan, the beach scene, shell lands nearby, GI in Tom Hanks' face screaming "What do we do now, SIR?" but TH can't hear anything but a loud whistling..... that was me! My face & hands were stinging because of powder burns & solder splashes, my eye's felt like & I'd been pegged down & my eyelids pinned open & forced to stare at the sun for 3hrs. Soldering iron was "L" shaped, board I'd had the casing stood on was scorched, there was a .5" dent in the ceiling & I never found the casing for 3 weeks!!! when I confronted him screaming "Are you trying to f******g well kill me?!!!!?" - he just laughed.... stopped laughing when he found my fist in his face...... but hey, that's brothers for you!!!!
  13. nothing major..... had an electric planer explode on me when I hit a blind nail in the bottom a door I was resizing.... bits of blade & sharp plastic flying everywhere - how it missed me I don't know. guitar wise - my biggest "oh ****" moment was when my wife knocked my 1st build over (SG) within an hour of me getting it completed - put a large pressure dent in the front face of the paint behind the tailpiece. near death experience/least intelligent moment that I actually survived - trying to solder a ring on the end cap of an EXTINCT .22 shell casing to make a pendant when I was 17 - lets just say scorched & solder splattered face, bent soldering iron, dented ceiling, temporary deafness, temporary blindness, ringing ears, laughing brother, etc. etc. this thread should definately be stickied & be proclaimed up there with Melvyn's tome for compulsory reading BEFORE attempting to build a guitar - or use power tools come to that!!
  14. no... i get the missus to check it for me.....
  15. I have no problems with the stiffness of my wood
  16. wow - indian r/w blanks? not cheap.... you can use them (Fender has used them for Telecasters) but they're very HEAVY!!!!!
