  1. oh, i thought it would have to be glued to the board before you could taper it. thanks.
  2. Hey i was just curious of the best method to taper a fretboard if its preslotted/radiused. A template wont sit flat on top, so what would I do? thanks
  3. I dont know how well flatsawn will work as opposed to quartersawn. in youre making a neck thru, you should have about enough room to turn the neck on its side, should you not? I understand that flatsawn is used and has been used for necks, but for all the time and trouble of building a neck thru, and having a bummed neck sounds pretty disappointing. save the disappointment and use quartersawn. If youre gonna spend the time n money, should do it rite. just my opinion...
  4. very cool. what did u use to carve it out? i love the look. very original too. (i havent seen anyhting like that before). good work. i think a strat would look wicked too... keep it up
  5. Hey eddie, is your nickname maiden related? iron maiden rules. I cant play that well, but im all about starting building... I hope to start very soon. But maiden, your guitar is hella sweet... good to see im not the only one getting into building... some say you gotta be able to play well to know how to build, but i dont think thats true... but regardless, your work is amazing.
  6. Ive got some long 6 foot or so pieces of mahogany. about 5" wide by about 1/2" thick. its flatsawn, so i was thinking about a neck thru. i have about 6 of them. What would u folks do? what woods would u use to laminate them? some walnut strips? id love to hear your ideas.....
  7. Even if the wood was all from the same tree, it wouldnt be controlled. wood is so different. youd would have to use the same neck. but im sure that this study would be a good area to start more specific testing, if someone were ambitious enough to do so
  8. Wheres the pottery and yarn spinning wheels at? Im sure someone has access to something creative. what about a microwave that you figure out the rotations and how many winds per minute. Automatic. plus you are recycling. bet theyd sound HOT. jk. but yeah. if you just used the motor and the timer on an old microwave, could you make an automatic pickup winder? 7 minutes for a pickup? itd be cool.
  9. yeah some pics on ebay are deceiving, im pretty cautious bout people pics.. but yeah. dont get me wrong ebay is great, but i question some pics..
  10. Jeremy, thanks for the great post. I was in the process of writing a thread on this myself. I was curious as to the costs asssosciated with copywriting, and any steps a small time builder can do prior to building that will help protect your designs. I assume not showing anyone is one key step. How close do they have to be to be considered ripoffs? Does it have to be blatant? Or just a resemblance and youre screwed? Thanks for the thread
  11. for bolt ons, could you not just drill a hole from the neck pocket to the pickups, then run ur wiring thru there? then you could leave the LED and the strands in the hole u drilled.
  12. that roman one looks alot like one i was drawing up. makes me want to give up, near impossible to make anything 100% original anymore.
  13. Hey Matt, He made the whole guitar outta metal, and he bought the Knob jk.. thats a sweet axe, speaking of which, have your ever thought of making a real axe bass? hah. sorry im in a weird mood.
  14. mahogany Nice spalt, would look nice if u used the middle for a bass or something. Just thought id see wat u all thought
  15. hey guys, I saw a few used planes for sale, one was in good condition and looked very similar to this plane It was a stanley. looked good, blade was sharp. what should i look for in buying one, and about how much should i be looking to spend? thanks
  16. didnt realize that they were different. thats why im here to learn....
  17. well also im assuming that concerns with keeping the body straight and flat may add to the reason why u see multi-piece bodies. i dunno if theyre actually solving a problem or just taking precautions, because lots of people use 1 and 2 piece bodies, and to my knowledge they dont warp. a friend claims he knows how to make 2 piece bodies he can guarantee wont warp. will a basic jointed 2 piece body fold? Kirk Hammet has an esp that is all maple neck thru. so you can do whatever u want. he has a wicked sound. but thats mostly the player. try it out. i had thought about it, but it would be really heavy.
  18. yeah i didnt buy it anyways cuz if im gonna get a cocobolo top, itll be covering the whole bass or guitar. that stuff is so darn sexxy tho. i love cocobolo. but yeah i know about the dust issue. its a shame something so beautiful can cause so many problems.
  19. kool. i wasnt sure, some ppl swear by quartersawn. thanks for the info tho.
  20. If i were making a guitar and wanted to use something like this as a top, what are any issues concerns i should have? are these quartersawn or flat? does it matter? will it warp? any advice would be great. thanks wood top
  21. Hey there, im not very up to date on the pickups, but Dimebag darrell used to have a dimebucker in the bridge and a 59 reissue in the neck. and dont jazz players use the neck pickup alot? so maybe this combo will help ya with the metal, vintage jazzz sound. but i dont know anything bout pickups.
  22. yeah i saw these too. i think theyre all made in asia, and theres some good craftspeople over there. could be done really poorly too. id be though with carvings and such its probably pretty good. I may have to get one myself.....
  23. i dont htink i get wat u r saying, like why is it so hard to rout? i think it would be neater if you routed it. u would have to cut a channel into the laminate, and since the rods only 1/4" wide and the laminate is 3/4", i think ud still have to route it. and 7/8" should be ok with a hotrod rite? i realized my necks arent even an inch thick at the heel, so maybe i wont need a block. thanks.
  24. good job cud. for 4 dollars more i got the 36" piece. i thought that was the one i posted.... or maybe i used my magic or misdirection.. not too sure wat i was thinkin. but yeah. good job, we will have (hopefully) nice axes , and they will be from the same wood. i think its cool cuz i never know what the other wood from that log is used for etc. so itll be good to see someone using the same stuff as me. i dunno if im making sense. just woke up. the joys of a day off...
