  1. I generally second hand smoke. All the fun, none of the cost.
  2. I'll second that. I got my Takamine just before Christmas, love it.
  3. It can be done. Fender produced Rosewood Telecasters for three years, 1969-1972. It produces a beautiful guitar (natural finish), but it is quite heavy. Apparently it is quite noticeable in terms of weight. After the first year of production, Fender made a laminate rosewood body. It wasn't a solid body, but had some hollowed chambers in between the two peices.
  4. So there I was sanding my body done about thirty minutes ago. I had a bit of a run in the paint from the last coat, so I had to get rid of it. As I was sanding, the corner of the sand paper (was using 400 grit) caught a bit of the run and lifted the paint from the body. The paint did not adhere to the primer! I was stunned... angry... annoyed... pissed... you name it, I felt it. The auto paint I was using adhered very nicely to itself, but not at all to the primer. 2 weeks of work down the drain. I'm pretty sure the problem lay in the fact I was using a crap primer -- Rustoleom "Painters Touch" from Home Depot. It's crap... horrible, will never use it again. Ever. Tomorrow I have to sand it down to wood and was going to give it a crack with some automotive primer from Canadian Tire.
  5. If you're just playing at home, I would think that foam ear plugs would work the best. It is my understand that the ear plugs the pros use block out a good deal of the sound, and they have to pipe in some sound so the band can play together.
  6. I can't speak for mahogany, but at least here in S. Ontario Ash is going up in price. We've been hit by the emerald bore, some freaky little bug that has a hard on for ash. Apparently upwards of 10 000 trees need to be culled in the area to stop it from spreading any more. Though in the short term, that might mean an abundance of semi-usable ash.
  7. You're right, I forgot about Mal. I'm a bad Beatles fan.
  8. I agree, I can't stand the design of the bowl backing on Ovations.
  9. I think this is what he is talking about CA Guitars. They seem to be along similiar lines as the Ovation guitars.
  10. I just checked out Walters Music store in town... even with the deal they cut me on my gear, those particular pick ups are starting at over $200 CDN. Looks like the Stew Mac Golden Age pups for me
  11. Nirvana is not old. But then again I felt old when I heard the Tragically Hip on the oldies station... and I'm only 24.
  12. I was just wondering if no test exists because the product it is testing for is illegal. I mean, how could you obtain a sample to make sure your test worked. If there product were legal (or at least decriminalized) it would stand to reason that a test would follow quite quickly. After all, the breathalyzer came along far after alcohol. But once the technology was available it was developed quite quickly. It's a chicken and egg thing I think.
  13. I think I have the opposite problem, whenever I play it never sounds quite right to me yet whenever anyone walks by they'll say "oh that xxxx, cool" And I'm surprised everytime. I'm not bragging, I just don't think I'm that good.
  14. Ooo, those sound right purty... thanks for the recomendation.
  15. Never smoked up personally, but I've done essays on the topic for school. There's no reason for it to be illegal, and think of the phat tax we can get on the stuff. I'm looking forward to the Martin government actually getting the pot deciminalization bill passed... not holding my breath for it though.
  16. In the video for the Manic Street Preachers newest single he plays his V sitting down during portions of it. Here is a medium speed connection to the video. Don't know if it'll be much help to you, but at least it's a good song
  17. My vote is fake... looking at the Paul McCartney guitar, the signatures look all off. Macca Guitar Macca Autograph ex. 1 Macca Autograph ex. 2
  18. My canooter valve stopped canootering, what's your secret to keep it in top canooter fashion?
  19. What's your favourite chord change in a song? I like going from E to F#m (a la 'Tangled Up in Blue') and D to F#m (like in 'Across the Universe'). Hell, I just really like F#m.
  20. Hey all, I'm in the market for new pick ups for my Epi LP 100... the bridge pick up is toast, so I figure I'll just up and replace both of them, get something of a more vintage sound. Anyway, I was cruising around and came across Choppers Music and was intrigued by this here, it does seem to fit my poor student budget. However, at that crazy low price I'm getting a sense of caveat emptor... anyone have any thoughts? These pickups any good? Thanks, eh? Jonathan
  21. It's a tough choice. On the one hand when you think of rock and roll you can't help but picture the strat. It is just so iconic -- it is literally the shape of rock and roll. On the other hand you have the les paul with it's sleek beautiful styling, almost like a woman. . . with a freakishly long neck. However, when it comes to actual sound, I'm going to say that the Rickenbaker is the most important sounding guitar. I mean honestly, how many bands were launched following the Beatles performance on the Ed Sullivan Show? And I do have a special place in my heart for the tele sound, thanks to Steve Cropper and Stax. With all that being said, I'm throwing my vote away by voting Nader
  22. I toyed with the idea of using the Krylon magnetic paint, but I wasn't sure how well it would work. I ended up breaking down and ordering the copper tape from Stew Mac, which really irked me because the stuff is made here in town by 3M. I had to pay duty and taxes on stuff bought out of the country for stuff made here in the country!</rant> Anyway, you can buy the stuff at Canadian Tire -- I can't recall the price off hand, but I think it was around $10 for a can.
  23. Hey all, This may seem like a real dumb question, but when I'm painting the body, do I need to cover the pick up cavities or will the paint have no effect when it comes time to shield them? I don't know if it matters, but I was going to be using some copper tape to ground. Thanks, Jonathan
  24. Lee Valley sells what they call Project Woods. They have all kinds of kooky woods that would be not so bad for making guitars. Cheers, Jonathan
  25. Here is the Saga website. As well in my journies looking for information on these kits, here are a couple of sites from GuitarAttack where they customized a Strat style kit and a Tele style kit. Hope this has been of some help. Jonathan
