  1. I back-tracked through the photos and looked at the other ones.. man that guitar is amazing looking.. really neat concept too. Totally get the hardwood boat thing going there.. and I love the nav lights on the back. That would be a killer thing on stage.. in the fog.. lol. If you can't find the switches you need locally, check out mouser online. It takes FOREVER to sfit through their thousands of pages but they have literally everything.
  2. from what i've seen/read tone pros are the way to go. Look on ebay, you can get a good deal quite often. There are several ways to go with tonepros depending on how much you want to spend. 1) buy locking studs only 2) buy the bridge or the tailpiece only with locking studs.. 3) replace the whole friggin thing. The locking studs are the heart of the tone pros system. If you feel your bridge is of low quality then i'd replace it all. but on a les paul; studio, the bridge shouldn't be all that bad. check out WD Music Products online (the distributor) and you can see descriptions of all the models. And yes, replacing a real LP will be a direct swap. You won't have to worry about spcing.
  3. well first of all, the buyer sounds pretty dramatic (reading the second email) and that's just the kind of person that can make your life miserable. Second of all, i would never have touched that neck because all your pictures were out of focus.. That's a big gamble on your part. You can't prove by your ad that the neck was in good condition. Your only option really is to offer him a refund. It's just 34 bucks.. But demand the neck back if you offer a refund. He can ship it or deliver it to you. You can try to file a claim and say that ups or fedex damaged the neck in freight but it will be hard to prove and it's in pretty bad shape.. process takes about 2 weeks. again.. it's 34 bucks. Why did a neck cost 14 dollars to ship if the guy was in driving distance?
  4. There is a 1.5 hp tankless compressor on ebay with a buy it now for 129 bucks.. Come to think of it, i've seen these before.. That's pretty smart. A propane can would hold a lot of air.
  5. That sure looks like one of the 80s attempts to cash in on the floyd craze to me.. Actually it looks kinda like the single locking trem on my 80s squier strat.. i'd probably pay someone 8.50 to take it
  6. upper horn is totally smoothed out now.. just the little ridge as the contours converge.. i'll post more pics tonight.. it's 99% done though.. i'm kicking it into high gear now.. The sanding disk works great.. you just have to clamp the body down (i clamped mine on the top of a bar stool so i could walk all the way around it..) and if you can get at just the right angle you actually have a lot of control with the angle grinder. I wish I had tried that a month ago..
  7. Maybe you could rub some oxy clean on it I have no idea dude.. anything that accellerates oxygen to the wood.. i'm sure there is some Mr Wizard concoction that would work.
  8. yeah bigsby's have their place.. but for your style you're going to want something you can dive and do crazy stuff with i'm sure.. i don't know of any tutorials per se on splitting the HB.. basically you have 2 single coils and and if you open it up you should see a a lead wire go to one, a jumper connect to the other, and the other lead wire coming out of the second.. You would just alter it to where both coils have output wires and you recreate the configuration with switching. But as idch said.. chek out GFS. He has fairly reasonable shipping overseas too. He's got an SD invader clone that would probably fit the bill. pretty cheap too. go to ebay and do a search for GFS pickup then go to the GuitarFetish ebay store, you'll find all that in there.
  9. Yep.. ash all the way.. dark epoxy fill.. check on ebay right now for 'ash body blank' and a store called PremiumCuts has some with really wild grain like that.. real flat and wide too so that technique would really pop.
  10. The trem.. There is a link above on routing dimensions for a floyd.. You have to bore 2 holes for the posts, then route a shape on the top side, and then another shape ont he bottom side.. The two meet at one point to allow the trem block to go through. A Kahler, if you can find one, will be the same way with the exception of the flyer.. and i have seen some of those on ebay recently. It is a surface mount kinda.. you have to recess it a tad and route out a space for it's built in spring system to live in.. but it doesn't go all the way through the body. The pickup, if it has 2 wires can't be split.. unless you modify it. if it has 4 wires then you're all good. just check out guitarelectronics.com and look through the wiring diagrams and you'll find some that include a split hb.
  11. OK.. Thanks again to those that prodded me to carve it a bit more. I picked up one of these and man - that makes some quick work of the wood. it's a 60 grit flap sander and from the previous picture, this is about 5 mins of grinding followed by 5 minutes of orbital at 120 grit.. it's still very rough obviously, but it's much more the smooth carve that I wanted originally. The flap sanders get 2 big thumbs up from me.. careful though, i believe they would eat clean through the body if you wanted to.. no burning either.. no worries there.. just eats the wood a little too fast to not be VERY careful. Here is one more view if they made that disk in say 120 or so i believe it would be perfect.. i'm sure they have other options, that's just what was at walmart. Thanks for indulging me.. I've never done a carved top before so this is quite an experiment for me.
  12. well yes. but i've never met an AMD'er that wasn't into overclocking.. they are easy to overclock.. It is true though that the chips didn't have the step down safety feature that intel had.. I'm contemplateing getting an amd box just to try it.. I want something optimized for sound. All i do other than audio is photoshop and some occassional 3d modeling.. As far as intel.. the xeons are 64bit and the itanium is in it's second generation.. but those are marketing towards super computing applications.. a desktop 64 just isn't a big market need right now. If they have had lagging or cancelled 64 bit programs i wouldn't be at all surprised if that were in the desktop arena.. Intel tends to produce chips that the latest microsoft software needs to operate. Once MS goes 64 intel will be ready i'm sure. The tail has to wag the dog don't ya know
  13. If you haven't already, check out the Harmony Central Reviews. i always go there. The phoenix gets decent marks, but only 2 reviews.. one person said 583 for cost. For an import, a grand is pretty high. But ultimately, if it plays well, who cares where it came from. If I had a grand to blow on a bass i'd find a used american jaxx or music man.
  14. Had to give it to Setch.. that paul is just flawless looking.. Looks like a vintage piece of gear..
  15. stew is a good source for the magnet wire.. If you want cheap but playable.. you might look at jason lollars site.. www.jasonlollar.com. (not that his pickups are cheap) but you might get some design ideas to build your own. For instance, you coudl take a cheap bar magnet, get a suitable piece of metal for a blade and make your bobbin out of cut up CD case plastic as was mentioned.. all a pickup is is magnet wire wrapped around a magnet thousands of times. Different pickup designs call for different types of magnets. A strat pup is 6 individual mags held by the bobbin.. a humbucker has a bar magnet on the bottom touching metal pole pieces.. a p90 is similar.. Ceramic strat pickups are usually steel pole pieces with a bar mag glued to the bottom of the pup.. Design can vary.. a blade pickup though would be the easiest type to build given the odd size of your project. You'll need some kind of winder.. if you're careful, you can rig something up with a drill..And buying wire, you're going to want to buy 43 awg probably.. and maybe even experiment with 44awg wire.. the standard 42 won't have enough room to get enough turns. The tele bridge pup isusually 42awg adn the neck is 43.. You would never fit enough 42awg wire on a tele neck bobbin so they used smaller gauge wire.
  16. Here is an electric mando for sale.. you can see how it's built.. they are a serious instrument.. it's certainly not a toy. you've inspired me to change my avatar.. to one of my other favorite movies.. lol.. Just google for electric mandolin and you'll find a bunch of em.
  17. I was wondering if AMD fixed their heat problems.. cause gamers running AMD stuff generally have like 20 fans in their case.. I saw a video once of an amd chip and a pentium chip running quake III.. they took the heat sink/fan assemblies off of them.. Intel has built in step down to cover for heat problems.. AMD does not (at least at the time didn't) and quake starting getting chunky as the pentium chip got hotter.. the amd sailed along beautifully... Until it burst into flame.. it was the funniest thing I had ever seen. Sepultura.. your system sounds nice.. the only thing i might recommend for recording is steering clear of the 58 and going for even a cheap condenser.. like the behringer B1 or something. 57s rock for high volume amp, snare, etc.. 58s are just lifeless in my opinion for voice.. they lose the sparkle and dont' have much definition. I don't know if you are recording voice or not but if you are.. 58s will get 90% of the sound but it's that last 10% that makes the difference between soemthing sounding professional or "tape recorded" I tried to get 58s to sound good and just was never successful. Great for stage bad for recording.. just my opinion.. I would hope the firepod is worth that much money as well.. I wonder if you would be better off spending 500 bucks on an m-audio delta 1010 or something. I'm looking at the delta 44.. it's just 149 bucks and gives me 4 realtime i/0 audio ports I can just port through my little behringer 12 channel mixer. I'm wrestling with the AMD thing right now.. I don't really worry about "being ready for 64" because when an OS is ready, the intel chips will be ready.. intel has 64 and has for some time, there is just no reason to push it when there are not apps to run on it yet..
  18. That's pretty freakin cool.. Sometimes you just have to do something, or you'll go crazy waiting for the opportunity to do the real thing.. Although, if you want to make it playable with a pickup.. id order some fretwire and stay away from the nails and fishing line There are electric mandos out there that are very similar.. they are often tele shaped. so you're talking 4 strings. You'd want to get a maple neck though.. probably too much tension for a little piece of pine. Nice avatar btw.. that's one of my fav scens from one of the best movies of all time..
  19. This is great.. i'll be watching this very closely. Thanks for providing this!
  20. That's the one i'm talking about.. That rocks..
  21. no.. no.. no.. Someone showed a picture of some nasto guitar someone tried that on.. Glitter is for kindergarten projects Seriously man.. use the search.. it's all in thee. The glitter you are referring to would be a metalflake finish.. it takes a real spray rig.. with a big spray tip. Look at some of the pinned threads.. LGM has one totally on rattlecans. you just have to go look for it.
  22. yes.. and if you want more detail.. you'll find a ton of threads on this.. hit the search area and it will all be revealed to you.. Good luck..
  23. Mmmm... Yuengling... Can't get that down here in TN. I have to stock up on it when we go to NC..
  24. I don't know what to think about the PRS thing. You dont' have to convince me of the Ed Roman BS factor.. but.. your picture of the CNC doesn't necessarily prove anything.. Both sides get carved.. When you turn it over you have to have smoething for the vacuum jig to grab ahold of.. I just think the heel is ugly looking.. to say it limits fret access is pretty silly.. it's still thinner than anyone's aanj (and apparently, ed roman holds the trademark for the all access neck joint on his quicksilver ) i guess he was so busy badmouthing ibanez he failed to notice they have been doing AANJs for quite some time.. What a goon. But anyway.. ugly as it may be, the prs still lets you get up to the very last fret without having to wrap your hand around the heel of the body and contort your arm to reach them. Greg.. the bolt in thing with the pickup.. you just have to work with a thicker neck stock.. Your neck is probably 1.75" thick at the heel so by the time it's bolted or set in and you route the pickup, there is still 1/4 to 3/8 of the tip of the neck left for screws to grab into. You can see it in the saga pictures.. (note to self.. don't bolt before you route ) I think whether bolted or glued, it's a superior design as you can totally eliminate the heel.
  25. You can find beat up 57s for a great price.. they are road worthy and take a beating.. I have a behringer 1204 or something like that.. the 12 channel mixer.. cost me 120 bucks i think. it's awesome. I also have the B-1. Used it a lot for acoustic recording and for voiceover work for multimedia projects.. Great setup. newegg.com has the m-audio delta 44 for 150 bucks. seems like a pretty good deal, you get 4 ins and 4 outs for monitoring, which is great for a little home setup. If anyone else records with a laptop, i have a dell and you can't record with the AC power in it.. You get a horrible buzzing sound. One sound guy told me it was just dells power supplies but i was skeptical. I read in some of the recording forums that several brands do this and it's a ground loop problem. You can 1) cut the ground plug off your ac adapter (not the best idea ) or 2) you can get a ground loop isolater from radio shack. I have no idea how much it costs but i don't think it's that expensive. Just an FYI for any laptop recorders out there frustrated by the line noise.. I do most of my stuff in acid pro btw.. i saw someone mention it. It's really handy because you can loop your own stuff. Doing soundtrack work and bg music for stuff, i dont' have time to do a hudnred takes.. so i can just get phrases right and build a loop library to set the bed for the song. It's a great workflow. I've never used any of the real packages though, PT or cubase.. maybe they have those features too.
