  1. Thats god trying to tell you something man. He wants you to build a 7 neck mocking bird. im tellin you man, its true A 7 neck mocking bird ? what about a 7 STRING mockingbird ? That I could use.... 7 necks is 6 too many, lol
  2. etch a sketch ! lmao.... and c'mon, over 50 or not, thats a vikings version of the Cloud.
  3. That aint drawing - you silly azz... thats computer squiggles. I did that with the mouse just to indicate what body shape I could use. and the ESP thing there looks ridiculous. Like Prince and Eric the Red designed a guitar together !!! I dig it, but this ones for a 50 year old who likes Fender Basses lol. It'll be fairly simple and not too over the top in any aspect ..... Thanks for stopping by tho - hopefully I'll have some better looking pics real soon , these made me queasy this morning.......
  4. Ummm... yeah. What he said. JK - Its a 'Church Bass' because its going to be played in a church and its built partly from an old board from a church so ... there you have it. A church bass. Like the chicken only non edible. I actually did o.k. today considering the rain n what not. I glued the lams yesterday and chopped up some necks n stuff. Today was shaping/planing/sanding/breaking/cussing/fixing/cussing/ and here we are ! ........ I'll explain. I jig-sawed the rough shape out , used a skil-saw as a plane and leveled off the different thicknesses to something sandable. Busted out the 40 grit belts and had a real good smoothing out session. leveled the back real quick, it was the front that was like a topographical map of colorado. The center lam was taller than the rest and the padouk was thicker than the other woods too. So - two belts and as many hours later , I had a good surface on front and back. I looked at it and smiled. and it split in two. I swear. O.K. , I touched it and it split , but it still split. The joint between the 260 year old board and the cedar next to it just let go. Like nothing was ever there....... There was evidence of glue on both surfaces, but definitely more on the cedar than the willow. ( I think thats what it is anyways ) so now I had two really cool looking halves but I aint to thrilled about it. I can already see me ditching this body and neck and doing something completely different, but until circumstances force my hand, this is still the plan. So : I glued up the two halves after cleaning them up and thats where it is now, in the clamps. so..... ......... Will keep posted on progress and pit-falls.
  5. Thanks Scott ! yeah, wide open style while its available. leave @ 6 AM and get home usually between 8 and 9 PM. 6 days a week, occasionally 7. Draining on the body, but nice for the finances. Gotta save up for winter like a squirell ! lol Will post some pics later today... BTW - that bear is flippin AWESOME !!! I'll get tiny's comments on it and let you know......
  6. The purpose of the tape: ( according to Stew/Mac ) with the tape in place , you put the glue on the neck and spread it, when you remove the tape, you have a small ,unglued spot along the side of the TR rout. the "squeeze" should fill that clear spot, but NOT go into the rout. I have used the tape method and not used it , I notice no real difference , the TR still adjusts on the non-taped necks. Too much glue is not your friend, too little glue is not your friend. Like alot of things in life, balance is the key to success. Good luck and have fun !
  7. My brother Jesse plays bass in his church and is also the one who taught me how to play guitar almost 25 years ago . Stairway to Heaven and Dust in the wind were my first two songs ! anyways - he sees all the geets I'm building and thought he'd get in on it ... but he waited until pool season was going wide open ! ( bad move.... ) Then God steps in, makes it rain for two days straight and allows me enough time to : glue up the lams , jigsaw the rough shape and cut out a few necks from a pallet runner and thats where I am right now, taking a break from building!!! ( yay!) Specs: Fender scale length P & J pups active electronics Padouk , cedar , white pine and Willow body ( 9 piece lam ) < side note: the willow is from a several-hundred-year-old church gate Quarter-sawn Oak neck made from a pallet runner Bolt on construction in case the neck is crapppppp......... ( do-overs ! ) Teak Oil finish Useless without pics : This is where we are.......
  8. No questions really, just wanted to say : I wanted the third soundhole pictured and read with baited breath - relieved to see you went with it. The more I read , the more I liked the build. 4 words.... Guitar. Of. The. Month. ( IMO ) THAT is the epitome of a "project guitar" . Congrats. My only little nit-pick is the angle that the strings wrap around the tuning pegs on that *beautiful* headstock. ( which is nothing but a personal, desperate attempt to find SOMETHING to improve upon , lol ) I <3 this guitar! funny neck screws and all !
  9. The only advice I can offer is this : Improvise with a tape recorder running. Listen back to your playing *the next day* ( fresh state of mind ) and pick out the things that you like the sound of. Work those parts out and improvise another recorded solo. fresh mind, pick apart, re-learn, repeat. after a month you'll have more new chops than you ever thought possible, and if you're truly 'improvising' , you'll have chops that sound likes you. good luck and remember, ruts are easily traveled and feel really familiar, but they lead to no new ground.
  10. I have and I did ! GREAT !!! work .
  11. Commission ? Have you even built a guitar yet ??? lol
  12. Muzz - great job. I like that you had a snarfle or two that you worked around and that you saw it out to the finish. Way to go ! as far as the video , nice stuff! Just write something original and the copyright BS isnt in play. Check out this guy : http://www.youtube.com/user/ZackKim#p/u/44/P-B4sjUve3E double ibanez!!
  13. Dimarrzioooo................ Freekin sweet.
  14. NOT TICKLESACK !!!! NOOOOOoooooooooo....... Muzz , you may take a while to build, but good things come to those who wait apparently. NICE job on the geet. Can't wait to see some pics of the finished product.
  15. Well Cam, I have heard that comment from many women about my other pointy stick. I'll give you the same answer that I gave them, yes it may look a bit large, but the way it is shaped makes it very comfortable
  16. My absolute favorite one so far is on my ML copy....... I was drilling the very small holes for the pup ring and I felt the bit go right through the back of the guitar......... I thought it was a big time boo-boo .... turned it over and found out it was only inside the spring cavity for the tremolo ...... no harm done. Scared me good for a moment tho. Amazingly enough , out of my 15 or so builds so far , no templates were used and no mistakes were made. no big ones anyway! lol so far.... so good....... ( fill in the blank .. )
  17. Dude , you can Sooooo do a neck angle. *I* can , and if my cave-man like building style allows for neck angles , i KNOW you could do it. * what a shame* about that top ! I loved it !!!!! I don't think it prominently displayed anything but schweetness , but I just used the words "I don't think" .... that was a nice top tho. Inlays are the bomb too. nice work.
  18. no need to worry about patents - its probably gone already... http://rksguitars.com/product_index.php cool designs tho......
  19. That's iron that was painted onto the wood (that's part of the reason I was able to rust it). It does have a bit of a blue hue to it, but it's the same stuff that's on the pickup rings and the headstock. It matches better in person. I think I should have emphasized that more in the photos. In time, probably a few years, it'll all start turning black. That's my theory at least. Try some Osphoric acid to get it black in a couple of days. We use it in automobile restoration as a rust killer, it converts oxidized metal into iron pryrite. ( so I'm told ) lol ... it does turn the rust black and shiny though ... You have to nuetralize it after a couple of days or it gets a white crust on it. Mineral spirits is the stuff to use.
  20. Me and you gotta start the McGuiver club............... Nice work , as you've displayed throughout. Don't get in a hurry at this point - the finish is the last half of the journey .
  21. I knew you would... thats why I asked for the end results.
  22. Might be a couple of reasons.... African Cherry is another name for it. and I don't think it'll be a great wood for guitar necks/ FB's. http://www.advantagelumber.com/makore.htm ^^ that says its not very stiff or stable . Do tell how it works out tho.
  23. Speaking of red w/ white......., whatever happened to your floyded strat build?
