  1. Mental notes are great and so is the help but execution is what matters. I don't pretend to know your skill level but I'd suggest a little patience and rethink your plans and start with something simpler. Building guitars is not cheap and I'd hate to see you spend a lot of money on something your not happy with. You may get this advice from many on this board too. Anyway, welcome to PG! Terry
  2. Thanks guys! Yes this was a deal that I was passing along. When I started getting back into building guitars several years ago, I received help on this site that went FAR beyond good value, both in price and advice. I try to give it back when I can (Pay it Forward, y'know... I think I'm tearing up... ). Rich, you nailed it Bud, that is good business insight and it is exactly why I was able to do this on this wood as there was very little waste. As far as other items, I'm sure they do have some things cheaper, but I think I am fair. Thanks Again. Terry D
  3. Hey Fluff, wecome to PG. Can we assume you will be putting a hard finish on the fretboard? I think the lams look good and I assume they will be strong enough, please keep us informed on how that works out. Looks great, keep up the pics. Nice looking shop too.
  4. The best way to earn a little money inthe guitar business is to start with A LOT of money!!! I think that was an old shipbuilders quote, anyway I can't take credit for it. But it does hold true and the advice in the responses above are good.
  5. Thanks Maiden, let me know what you want by email before you order and I'll see what I can do. (this goes for everyone that wants to order after the PG sale ends) TD
  6. Agreed, butt joint is fine and is the standard but use a good glue. Original Titebond is good and relatively inexpensive, hyde glue if you are familiar with the process is good too..
  7. Hey Gang, just got some great, 1pc mahogany body blanks that I thought I'd offer to my PG friends first before I listed them on the website. 13.25 wide x 21+ long x 1.75 inches thick, Kiln Dried and ready for use! This is South American Mahogany, what most call Honduras. $59 each with FREE Shipping to PG'ers in the continental US.Send me a note and I'll send a paypal invoice. ALSO, I'll knock 10% off anything on the website too! Just type"PG" in the promotion code box (without the quotes) and 10% will come off your order through Sept 15th. You'll find a full line of items & Parts including Korina/Limba wood, neck blanks, pickups... Doeringer Guitars Sorry I have not been posting much lately. Terry D.
  8. Love the zebrawood, as for the necks, you usually get what you pay for... Good Luck
  9. Hey that's a sharp looking guitar! Congrats! Thanks for the kind words, I need to make time to visit PG more often. I only wish that it had been around when I started building, would have saved countless hours of trial and error (more error than trial sometimes).
  10. I've said it a hundred times! I think a kit is a perfect start for someone interested in building. Low investment, gives you some idea of the scope of building, and you wind up with a playable instrument. Good job so far JEEtoP, building this will also help you plan correctly for the next dozen or so!
  11. if you are using Nitro as a clear, your first several coats have to be very light, just a dusting. Otherwise the lacquer will disolve the waterslide.
  12. I'm not a wood dealer but I always try to get the best price which usually means that I buy more than I actually need. So $50 to your door, no shipping charge to PG'ers (Continental US only, sorry). I have 3 available and can accept PayPal. The subtitle should read good stripes not strips, I type as good as I play guitar...
  13. I was not impressed with the LVLP guns but I do agree that you can get a decent coat with a cheaper gun. I have a couple of nice DeVillbis guns but I built quite a few with a basic no-namer. If it was not mentioned before, make sure you get a moisture trap on your compressor.
  14. I've seen the threads about him and saw how he jabbed at a few PG'ers on his site. That is why I thougt this community would enjoy it! Yes the lutherie skills of Litch and the a-holedness of Roman.
  15. OMFG Give up now, we can't compete, even as hobbyists, its just not worth it anymore... and for only $1500.00. The un-enlightened would call this amazing figure 'knots' kill me now...(and thank my wife for this entertaining find)
  16. Poplar or Basswood will do a thousand times better and IF there is a cost difference, it will only be a couple of dollars.
  17. Yes that neck in the ad has a strat pocket and will not fit the ibanez pocket exactly. PM Sent
  18. Gotcha! but even at 15 passes, that is still not a lot of time. So exactly what is 1/15th of 1/16? 1/240th if my math is right
  19. +1 for Opposite - as long as the nitro has cured before the pickguard was attached, there should not be a problem. Find an older nitro guitar and pull off the pickguard, almost looks like it was just buffed underneath. If this were a big problem, other parts like plastic pickup rings, cavity covers... could not be used. Manufacturers need to put warning labels on products, sometimes for valid reasons and sometimes to protect themselves (sometimes from idiots). Here is a good example - I have my own brand of Hot Sauce. Hot Sauce does not need to be refrigerated (as long as the PH in the recipe is at the right level) but every bottle you find will say Keep Refrigerated (or something similar)...Why? Not because the sauce will go bad, but because the person putting sauce on their burger (or whatever) may touch the food with the lip of the bottle, put it back up in the cabinet, then will blame the maker for the furry growth that appears on the sauce.
  20. No, he said he uses a joiner for that, maybe 3 passes at a very conservative setting. Still doesn't take hours. I agree the blocks are not perfect and I usually use them for clean up and cauls. And I agree with having a quality straight edge. Assuming that either way you go, you have the skills to get the final product done correctly... I look at it this way, pre-radiused boards cost an extra $8-12 bucks. So even if it ONLY saves 45 mins it is a worthy cost.
  21. I like the idea and it sounds like it would work. I'm not sure if the shop vac would have enough power though spread out over that much area(?). Are you going to give it a try?
  22. Susanna Hoffs = yum. She'd make any guitar look good. Micky is spot on with the details, sorry I have not seen many Ric templates out there. Is there one near you that you can trace and measure?
  23. If he's putting 1/4 walnut on both the top and back, that is a 1 inch headstock, and PLENTY thick. It is very common to put a veneer on a headstock for strength or looks but I think that is too much, not to mention the extra weight.
