  1. Well, I'm 42, been playing since I was 13 and have been in love with wood grain the entire time... just when does one start to tire of good looking wood? I agree about the cheap veneers. I definately can appreciate a good paint job, even some of the graphic jobs i've seen are really cool. There are people on here (like paint-it and others) that are true artists, I love the stuff and would be proud to own it. But for my weary eyes, you can't beat woodgrain!
  2. He's a member here! I have used some of the GFS pickups and have been very pleased with them. They have a line of budget pickups too, which are budget pickups... I have not tried any of there other parts but have heard good things.
  3. Interesting, lots of great ideas. I'd be willing to help plan and organize if the group thinks it can be done, might also enter. all depends, I'm going to give it some thought too.
  4. #1 Thank yourself for asking questions before attepting to do the work, that just put you ahead of most. The screws holding a neck on are there just so you CAN take the neck on and off. That being said, you can also do damage and make it loose if you are careless. Might want to stay away from the power driver too. Repainting? or will you be taking off the finish and starting with bare wood? You would first need to know what finish is on there now. If you let us know if is an actual Fender, a Squire, or a copy, and maybe even how old it is, one of the paint experts can tell you what is on there now and what would be best to use. We will also be able to give advice about if you should or shouldn't refinish it. There is no certain lacquer that will give you factory results, or maybe a better way of putting it is that they all will give you factory results, but the key is your sanding skills, what you shoot the lacquer with and the time you spend buffing. There are many tutorials that will help you get a better understanding, look for them here in the forum ad off the main site too.
  5. All good solutions, I like the korina (Limba) best. How thick is the Zebrawood? Keep in mind that this is heavy wood. I have a bass and a tele with Zebrawood 3/4in and a mahogany back 1in. Both sound great and are not too heavy, but certainly not light.
  6. Mattia, Too funny!, Now get your mind out of the gutter
  7. Nick, PM sent. Sorry I was away from the 1st to the 8th and when I opened PG it said I had 0 new messages. I didn't find yours until I saw this post and searched for it. Yep, not many blessed with this last name!
  8. I don't disagree with the rolling nut too much if he is a big bender. But I would agree with most everything being said, especially the stay away part. Once you have built about 20 guitars, then you can START to think profit. I would say $950 is way to cheap for the time involved. Stay on PG, learn and grow, if after you have built several and still want to make a go at it. Then start making plans, just don't expect to make money with it... you may be able to eek out an existance...
  9. The quicksilver and the roman guitars feel like a PRS too, but I didn't plug one in, maybe I should have just to be able to say...
  10. Good stuff! I had a friend that taught police how to ride motorcycles. He would always say "If you ever get on your bike, and you are not at least a little bit afraid and cautious of it...get off immediately, as that is when you are more likely to have an accident" Same thing would apply to power tools.
  11. Did this on a 3 pup LP I built about a hundred years ago and I love it. I really built it that way more for looks but found it to be very useful, especially for studio work.
  12. Well if that is the case, then a clear should work, depending on how invisible you want it to be. I have only done this on a couple with decent results, but they were on cheaper guitars where the customer wanted it to look 'better' but was not paying for perfection. Hopefully a finishing expert can chime in... let us know how it turns out.
  13. It is either a dent or a chip. If it is a chip you need black poly. A dent you can drop fill and carefully sand flush and polish. CA works best with lacquer but I have had reasonable success filling poly. But it is still noticable up close.
  14. Hey gang, if you are not familiar with Derek's work, these are well worth the money. Hell, you could stick em on the bay and make some Christmas cash.
  15. Always a tough choice, but this month is the hardest for me. I went with Pukko, not because it would be a guitar that I would buy, but because the design, the parts and the look all went together so well.
  16. I bought one of his necks several years ago. It was decent, made in Korea type, that I used in a parts build for a neighbor/friend who's kid was wanting to pick up the guitar. I recall having to cut an AANJ type pocket to fit. ( Heel is 80mm x 56mm x 20mm )
  17. Wasn't there a GOTM with puzzle pieces a couple of months ago? Heggis - at first glance your avatar looks like the Fly by Night album art from Rush
  18. Sounds right. Looks like good clean work so far! Tha wood shouldn't move much at all...
  19. Grimz, Did you notice that everyone that answerd was in the "Damn" UK. Right helpful lads, wouldn't you say?
  20. McCartney had the same "lazyness" problem and was able to string songs tgether that normally wouldn't go together.
  21. Nut slots look a little deep(?) Are you sure that is the way you want it to be?
