  1. Check out carvin.com. They have a new amp, the V3 series, and Im really impressed. 3 Channels all tube, under a grand for the head. I was really saving to buy a Krankenstein, but I played through one and no matter what I did it seemed to fuzzy. They have a video to watch and sound clips to help you decide for yourself
  2. Did you buy it from a store? If ya just got it and you bought it from a store, just go back to the store and ask them if they will fix it. If not, do you know how to solder? Do you know how to check the pickups to see if they are shorted or open? If not, you should probably see a pro. Not trying to discourage you from fixing your own guitar, but based on how you asked your question, and your post number, it seems your a bit inexperienced. I would hate to see you damage your electronics or your finish to save 20 bucks.
  3. Well worth the purchase price is control freak. Just pm Jehle and ask him about it. Its a multimedia cd that show the process he used for building guitars from kits and scratch. Then you get the music he recorded with those guitars. I read martins book and melvyns book, and stilll bought Jehle's Cd because I learn faster watching it being done than just from books alone. Was a tremedous help. Or you could just use a search engine and look for Bill Jehle Control Freak and get it right off his website. I dont remember the address or I would just give it to you
  4. If your cutting your fretboard on a bandsaw, buy the most teeth per inch you can find for your model. I was using a pretty standard TPI blade and it was so hard to control, I had to buy a "metal" cutting bit, and even then I had to go SLOW to maintain any control. But I think it would look awesome as a fretboard. It is indeed a gorgeous wood Good luck.
  5. Some home improvement stores allow you to rent tools. I rented a thickness planner from a tool rental place down the street from my house. 25 bucks for a weekend, and I did it on a 3 day weekend just in case I neded more time, and the guy showed me how to use it properly. They needed a credit card for a deposit if you decide to walk away with it, but it was pretty straight forward. +1 to Mick Do you really think you will only build one guitar?!?
  6. Check and see if the finish you choose to use has some sort of UV protectant qualities. My Purpleheart superstrat wil be finished in urethane that does offer UV protection. Also like mentioned, go shallow many times with your router, as my lack of knowledge at the time KILLED a brand new bit. Expensive mistakes.....
  7. That link is priceless. It really does a good job of explaining the basic layout and differences in amplifiers, along with saftey in working with tubes. That teamed with the other books I read really gives me the confidence to dive in now. The chassis I have has been drilled and some components mounted. The Template for the head has been cut out of OSB and test fitted. Time to break out the soldering iron. Thank you lovekraft.
  8. No, Ya know whats funny? Your statement about spreading out the gain stages makes perfect sense, and I understand perfectly...but I had to spend over a hundred bucks on books to read over the past couple of weeks.....AND ITS NOT MENTIONED IN ANY OF THE BOOKS THAT SIMPLY. I had to figure that out on my own. Whacha gonna do. Everyting I have learned thus far has been based more on failure than success, and yet Im still alive.
  9. The contents you have listed are for his theory book that I read. Good read but didnt answer my questions. Have the tube amp essentials by Weber already, and it only had 3 pages on DIY amps. Basically, Im curious why a fender tweed amp and a peavey 5150 amp are both tube amps, but the 5150 can really crank with out over fuzzing the distortion, and a cranked tweed will never sound like a 5150 as far as distortion. Dont get me wrong, the tweed is a beautiful amp, just not my bag o tricks.
  10. Pops guitars. This guy builds and repairs out of his basement, and he had some acoustic necks that he was gonna pitch anyways. Im just looking to practice removing fretboards without rendering one of my guitars useless. Have an explorer copy, neck thru that I want to put a fretboard with one inlay on the 12th, and a V copy that I would like to do a Sandoval rhodes style with the bowtie. I know the v would be just as easy to do with the existing fretboard, but what would I learn by doing that?
  11. Thanks to all however I found a guitar shop that gave me 4 necks to practice with. Can close the thread.
  12. havent read that one yet, but Ill have to check it out. Tinos book volume 2 is good for building exactly what he has listed in the book, but thats it. Its very detailed in what wires connect where, how to drill yer holes, troubleshooting it after its build, but not much else. Everything is specific to the amps he has listed. There are no modificaton exapmles, no theory behind the build. Its basically drill hole at x spot. install x componnent, solder to x pin on x cap and voila. Its a great book for building a Marshall plexi from scratch, but not for me. Im looking to go deeper.
  13. I just ordered vol 2, I will post back my opinion if yer all interested.
  14. Thank you, I got it for a steal. Neal Moser and his forum confirmed it is a early eighties rico. And it is really a nice playing guitar
  15. I did reset my claw so the bridge sat level. I had a problem like your having with a BC rich I had. No matter how may springs or how they were configured, I would always be out of tune after I used the bar. The block on the bottom of the trem was the problem. The metal used for the block was not very rigid, and it would bend ever so slightly untill one of the springs actually came out(took about a year). Since the trem has been replaced, no problems.
  16. The blue floral jem was a paper material while the black floral pattern was indeed cloth. There is a tutorial on how to do it on the main page. Look for material finish. I am on my second one now, and my 3rd will prob be entered in GOTM once I finish it.......waiting on funds
  17. I have set all of my trem guitars with the "tent" setup on the springs for years and havent had a problem yet. I did have to readjust the claw a bit. It just seems more positive feeling and more touch responsive.
  18. So far with the seriel number.. I was told it was not actually built by BC Rich guitars but by Class Axe in conjuction with Bernie Rico, so even BC Rich cant help
  19. I like it...but look at my name go figure (think a dark to light blue burst would look better IMO)
  20. I have a B.C. Rico neck thru wave Serial number R1701 and nobody seems to have any idea of what im talking about. Google search shows BC Rich makes a Tripp wave only available in silver with the Static X Garb( hence the Tripp sig model) All I know is somehow, all records for these old monsters disappeared, and now I have a guitar that cant be identified. Even the serial number dosent match up to what BC Rich says should be there(6 digits) Help please?
  21. The theory book is good for basic knowledge, but not directly helpfull as far as building your own amp. It explains basic tube function and circuits, but it was a bit over my head at the time. I need to get it back from the library, now that I have somewhat of an idea of how it all works. If you email him through evilbay, he'll send ya some pages out of the books.Im still searching for the ultimate beginners guide. I work on cars for a living, so reading wiring diagrams is not a big deal, but its all 14 volts DC. Needed something to show the differences between the too. The book stewmac has is good for someone that already has a grasp on schemaitcs, it has a seperate section full of them, but its sparce with info on doing "yer own thang"
  22. Kit is coming together sure but steady. Bought Webers book on Tony Kranks suggestion(who knew it would be so easy to contact the man?!?) Got Dave Hunters book on tube amps for Christmas, and talked to Tino Zatolla about his homebrew amp books, and I will probably buy those too. Now, I have yet to find anything that explains how to cascade boost the preamp stages far added gain, just schematics, and I was curious if there was anyone that knows of some resourses for that in particular.
  23. All I wanted was to play that 59 les paul that was on evilbay for 200 grand. Would have to sell my old lady and children to afford it...might not be so bad Just a joke......
  24. 528 pages!!!! I dont think my ancient computer will handle it. I did however think of that, but Id rather flip pages than check each scan to find what Im lookin for. Ordering my amp kit and either the ultimate tone or tube guitar amp essentials this week. Any preferences between the 2 books, or am I on my own.
