  1. I'll probably wait another week or two anyway. Plenty of other things to get ready in the meantime.
  2. Forget dots - my first inlay was a vine. Turned out fairly nice, but took forever. Like Rich said, you can buy straight pre-cut purfling strips. DePaule, stewmac, etc. Read up on inlay (clavin has a good tutorial access it through the home page). Plan your design carefully, use the correct tools, practice on scrap, and take your time. Did I mention practice on scrap? Mike
  3. Shell purfling along the edge of a fingerboard isn't unheard of. It's do-able, but you'll need "mad skills" to make it look good.
  4. Could it be?!? I took a sniff this morning before I left for work... maybe I wasn't awake yet... but I don't think I smelled any solvents.
  5. I'm sure that half-hour doesn't include design, layout, cutting and fitting. And cSuttle's a professional (unlike us amateur hacks ). Of course he's sending it off! Excellent work!
  6. OK, so I started adjusting the guides, bearings, etc. but I couldn't get the blade to track properly. Problem is, the wheels were out of alignment with each other. So I disassembled the thing and found that the alignment pins at the joint where the top and bottom of the frame bolt together were slightly off. I ended up taking out one pin, correcting the joint alignment, and bolting it back together. The blade tracks properly now. Needless to say, I'm not impressed with Delta's little Q.C. lapse - two hours wasted troubleshooting. Now I have to reassemble and readjust everything, then fire it off to see how it performs...
  7. Thank you, Doctor, I feel much better now. Should I hang it in a warmer room? My closet stays around 70° F, but the attic can get over 90° F depending on how sunny it is. I need to fire off that new bandsaw - the tuner button blanks need to be roughed out, and I have some rosewood to resaw for the control cavity cover...
  8. ...must...resist...urge...to...buff...out...must...resist...urge...to...buff...out... ...must...resist...urge...to...buff...out...must...resist...urge...to...buff...out... It'll be 30 days tomorrow. The lacquer is quite hard (passed the fingernail test weeks ago) but the body is still gassing off just a wee bit... The neck seems to be pretty much done. Another couple of weeks? resistresistresistresistresist...
  9. Here's the fingerboard blank: plus a couple more I have on the way: brw fingerboards and a better pic of the one-piece honduran mahogany blank I got from Guitarfrenzy.
  10. Forget shipping - I'll personally drive down there, clean up your shop, and haul out the "trash"... no charge.
  11. Congrats, Chris I looked at that one as well, but didn't want to shell out quite that much $$... hence the 10" Delta. Still haven't had time to fire it up yet. Mike
  12. Today I just happened to read the acknowledgements page in the back of my Hiscock book... where a certain resident "hobbyist guitar tinkerer and full time guitar forums poster" is listed.
  13. n-Track Studio isn't bad if you want something basic, with a small learning curve. And it's only $50 or so. PC only - I don't think you mentioned your OS. Otherwise, I'd go with ProTools, Logic Pro, or Digital Performer (in that order). Perhaps attend a workshop or two to get you up to speed.
  14. +1 I'm not a big fan of the Tele, but I like what I'm seeing here.
  15. Didn't even have to pretend last time... My son and I had time to kill awhile back, so we went and hung out at Dusty Strings (a high end acoustic shop) and then ventured over to GC. We started out playing the cheaper floor models, then the salesman offered to take some of the nicer PRS models down from the top rack for us to try. It probably helps to be 40+ and playing something other than the buzzy nu-metal that permeates the air there.
  16. Hope he hasn't developed a taste for black limba.
  17. For sure... I just haven't been able to perform a good PRS vs. Gibson comparison, in order to hear/feel the difference that 1/4" - 7/16" makes. I guess it's time to pay a visit to Guitar Center.
  18. Seems like you'd have to do some contortions to play an open G chord.
  19. The b/r/w fingerboard arrived safe and sound from AU today... can't wait to get home and check it out. I'm rethinking the scale length... I've been listening to a lot of Mr. Lifeson's 355 lately... just love that 355/Hiwatt sound. Anybody care to venture an opinion on 25" scale vs. 24-3/4" or 24-9/16"?
  20. I like Gibsons, but you do have to play a few to find a really good one. Nothing nicer sounding than a good LP or 335/355, IMO. Nothing wrong with Ibanez, either, but you really can't compare a JEM and an LP - apples and oranges and all that. That being said, I'd rather play my custom DIY.
  21. The little 9" or the 10" freestanding model? I haven't fired it off yet, but it appears to be very solidly built - much heftier than a 10" Ryobi. The frame is heavy cast iron, and the wheels are cast (aluminum?) and operate very smoothly. I bought this one on Delta's reputation, and the fact that it has a full 7" depth of cut vs. 4" or less for most competitive models. Not bad for $175 (after rebate). I'll let you know how it performs.
  22. The L.R. Baggs I-Beam sounds really nice. Very natural, good dynamic range, none of the harsh piezo quack, and it records well straight into the desk. Only downside is it's not as feedback-resistant as an under-saddle piezo for really loud gigs. You can find them (with preamp) for about $125 - $135.
