  1. I betcha they expect you to play the stupid thing. All that technology and it cant even play itself!
  2. To build or not to build...That is never the question! You will build, and build you shall. If your making a guitar and it was just a one off thing, then no. But you have an obvious interest in the luthiery sciences and will be building another one regardless. You have one thing now that many of us do not, an excuse to build. I would definitely go with what Muzz said. Go piece by piece with the guy work on it a little and ask for no cash upfront. In the end if he says no, then you got that guitar out of the way and you probably had fun doing it. Few of us could be called luthiers, many of us could pull off the technician title, but all of us build out of compulsion to feed a hobby. I guess its how you feel personally. Maybe you don't like the guy. But if you are indifferent, maybe you could end up with another who shares your interest and the forum will gain another member!
  3. I love those guys in the audience and Zakk changing guitars with the loud power snap!
  4. I need everyones opinion between these two 410s I want to buy. Do you think that this Nonported one is good or this Ported one. Mind you there is about $100 difference in price .
  5. my advice, wait a week and check back on ebay. Sometimes good things come to those who wait. I've done almost all my parts shopping on ebay. Once in awhile you'll find an item with no bids and six days left but with no reserve and sometimes buy it now for an excellent price. I can get almost anything if i just wait. I'm looking for a nice bass body for add a new tremolo to. Don't see anything today, I'll try again on wednesday.
  6. Wow, I wonder how much my ABM Floyd bass tremolo bridge is worth now?
  7. actually I use those locking discs that stewmac sells for $2. Never had that problem. I guess I'll be getting a set for my friend. In practice, everything is cherry, nobody screws up all the vocals are spot on, the parts just fall into place. Usually I go well with the background yelling, but if I can't hear the singer, I can't harmonize.
  8. Thanks Jon. Though we did not win the contest, we still made it to the finals for a debut gig and got three cases of beer. We had the crowd on our side and the place was jumping. We had a few minor problems: my hand went numb at the beginning of the set, we had no mixing in the monitors (I couldn't harmonize with the singer) the sound guy cut my mike in the middle of one of my parts, the lead guitar popped a string through the second song, and most memorable, the rhythem guitarist went to hit a note on the down beat and his strap flopped off and his prized strat lost a good chunk of paint on the hard stage. I was a little disappointed but a lot of the other bands said they were impressed by us. No hard feelings, onto the next gig.
  9. Here's a general idea, the band has about 25 songs in its catalogue, all original. The new guitarist and myself can rally 15 or so together. Now it's really pick and choosing time because we are playing Thursday. Same judges, venue, and the winners from the last three nights of this. Since the genres are all over the board, I was thinking of changing out half the set in favor of something to showcase our versatility. They want to do a cover or two, but I flat out refuse. Covers are good for gigs, not contests. Every band that I saw play a cover never made it in the contest. You can check out what I mean at our website I was initially going to argue keeping the same set, but perhaps change maybe one song. I guess everythings is going to be changed up.
  10. Okay, not to overstroke anyones ego, but we played a battle of the bands against three other "hard" bands and we won. Now we are going to participate in the finals with the last weekly winners. Should we change the set up or keep it the same. THe whole bands is kind of leaning one way or the other. The guitarist wants the closing song to be the opening song, general fixes here and there. But I am a little skeptical. I may want to change out a song or two, but not change the whole order. Experienced replies appreciated.
  11. I'd say a month and start looking in the city pages and local papers for drummers. Set up audition times on days you don't normally practice and test the waters. You might get a guy who comes in and blows you away and you might end up hastening the expulsion of your old drummer.
  12. I'd pull his ass aside and ask him what the hell is going on. If he's not getting it, run it by him that everyone has made a huge commitment to the band and he keeps coming up short. Either he pulls it together or he's out. Simple. If there is a solid reason for this spending (like a new chick) tell him that if you guys are gigging it'll probably starting bringing in an income (and impress the ladies). Trust me man, I had the almost exact same problem years ago, except the drummer was trying to bring in his controlling brother as well. We looked at him and told him his brother was never accepted in the band and if he was going to turn tail then I'd give him a ride home. Never looked back. Sad really. I also had a similar issue with my addict drummer who had no cash for anything, rent or otherwise, but wanted to buy a really expensive one off cymbal. Eventually we relented but he ended up taking over my old band studio with his side band and they started chucking invaluable demos and recordings. Even an old rig I was planning on restoring. Man, musicians some in a wide variety of flavors, unfortunately most of them are rotten either in style, attitude, or lack of motivation.
  13. Actually both of the x braces are the same size and length. See when I drilled the new holes, I came too close to the bracing on the second x for the one hole and the other was drilled into the bracing. I was hoping to plug both holes and redrill. I could put together a second bridge plate, but the area is hard to determine the dimensions.
  14. In the order of questioning, yes, no, there is like a double x design. The new bridge location sits on top of the second x. like this. +.\ \...../ /...|..\ \...../ / N ..\ \../ /..o|....\ \../ /o <(new screw holes) E ....\ \ /....|......\ \/ / C ..../ / \..o|....../ /.\ \.o <(new screwholes) K .. / /..\ \..|..../ /...\ \ + ./ /.....\ \.|../ /......\ \ (1st x)^ ^(plate) ^(2nd x) I hope this crappy diagram helps.
  15. Yeah, I bought this a while ago so I don't think it is going to be as simple. Plus I bought it because it was cheap and it was listed a "project, needs bridge repositioned" I mainly do work on solid bodies and didn't account for it to be such a pain do.
  16. Yeah, I scoured ebay for a good cheap acoustic bass as it is something I kinda could use. The local guitar shops really didnt have any selection and the only one I could find was an Ibanez for $300. Begrumbled, I come across this puppy for $80. Came new, I got an EQ and acoustic pickup as well. I figured if it was going to be a bridge move, I't woudln't be a big deal(yeah right.) The seller sells a TON of parts and complete instruments.
  17. Here is a full pic of the guitar. Keep in mind that the yard stick is 36" in length. It's not the best, but you can make out the inch marks indicating the bridge is indeed four marks from the end.
  18. maybe I'm crazy but does this look right? So the neck is 34" scale, but the bridge is at a 32" scale. Am I just crazy, do I need to look again? I compared it to my other 34" scale basses and the frets and whatnot line up perfectly.
  19. So, let me start this off to say that I am not incompetent. I think... I picked up a Crestwood (whoever) bass acoustic guitar as a project. I didn't have the cash to throw at a new or used acoustic bass (like $300) so I figured for the price I'll go find a nice project. I found a brand new, unused bass with only one teensy little problem: some yo-yo at the factory placed the bridge like a regular guitar and not in a bass scale. That said, I promptly taped off the area around the bridge and laid a little fabric over the bridge and grabbed the iron. I gently pried the bridge off and noticed that it was bolted all the way through! D'oh! So, I removed the bolts and did some careful measurements and lined the bridge up to the correct scale position. I carefully drilled new positional bolt holes only to find that one of the holes was drilled into the bracing! D'oh!! Although the other hole missed the brace by a hair, do I now have to plug those two holes, sand and redrill? Am I screwed, do I give in? I know pretty much that I have to use a thin layer of filler on the exposed wood where the bridge formally sat, maybe laquer over some cool artwork or something, but this little project that was supposed to be cake has taken on a life of its own. Suggestions helpful.
  20. You may also want to pick up a TOM style Schaller roller bridge also from stew mac to relieve tension on the strings.
  21. I spoke to a technician who does a lot of modding and rigging professionally. He said that I should be about to remove the ac cord and look for a 9v power spot in the board, then add a battery connector to that. Does that sound right, or did I not hear him correctly?
  22. Actually its for my electric upright project. Hee hee.
