  1. Hey, that's a good tip. I like it. You'll have to play "We are the Champignons" on it in tribute when it's complete.
  2. Yuck. That's worse than mine. In my case, it would have to be a "Jay" though.
  3. Welcome aboard. Looking forward to those pictures.
  4. I'm actually a bit surprised at the landslide victory of the Gretsch. I would have thought that a "Rawk" guitar would have won out. Much to my surprise, better than 80% are in favor of something different. It's gonna be a Gretsch, and probably some flavor of Duo Jet. I am already starting to pick out parts online and to start drawing out plans for it... the hard way idch... pencil and paper. The big question now is, how ugly should I make the headstock?
  5. I made a very similar radiused sanding block using the Band Saw. I still had the same issue of gluing a bunch of small sections together, but it did work. If I find a picture of what I did, I'll post it for y'all to see. It's pretty crude, but it worked for what I needed.
  6. Just make sure that you don't put them in backwards. If you do, you'll have to take them out and put them back in the right way around.
  7. Woo Hoo, I'm in 3rd place! It's okay. It's the best feeling guitar to play that I own, and it's the cheapest at the same time. It's too bad that y'all cant feel how great it feels. But this isn't about feel.
  8. Wow, nice link! Hadn't seen that one yet. I've been looking at www.provide.net/~cfh/gretsch.html More digging.
  9. I was wondering about the neck join. I presume that it's a set neck because it was designed to compete with the Les Paul. I'd guess that the sound chambers are similar to other ones that I've seen. An empty upper part, an empty lower part, and a little open square bit just below the Bigsby. I really need to find one for sale somewhere, or find someone that's got one, and take a lot of notes on it. Anyone close to Gruhn Guitars? I'm about 2 hours South from there.
  10. Hey, no fair. Duo Jets suck... Nah, shouldn't build one of those.
  11. It's needs a "J" hole. Why not build one?
  12. It's pretty obvious that the Gretsch is gonna win here. With that in mind, I've started looking around at what materials I plan to use, the construction method, what color, etc... Based on what I've found out, a Cadillac Green Duo Jet looks like the guitar to have. According to what I've read, that's a rare combination. The only thing I really don't like about the Duo Jet is that it looks too skinny (13 1/4" wide). I may have to make it Fatter. There was a brief moment where I considered an ES-355 with Bigsby, but they just look wrong to me. I think it's the double cutaway. This is gonna rock!
  13. Now that you've said it, I wouldn't be a bit surprised if somebody around here gives it a shot. ← That's a crack at me, ain't it? Well, actually, I was wondering...why couldn't I make my own wire... Only kidding! ← I've been wondering what to do with all of this spare change I have. With these pennies, you could draw your own wire to wind your own pickups.
  14. I have an old wire harness pulled from a organ (may have even been a hammond). I've been building things out of that wire for years. Lately, I seem to have enough extra wire from the pickups themselves. There's more than enough leftover when I cut the wire to length. I pull the four wires (two for single coils) out of their sheilding and use that to complete the rest of the guitar circuit. Since you ask about radio shack, I have bought some 4 conductor ribbon cable from them in the past. The coating on them is really tough. If you need one wire, you can zip it off the ribbon. If you need 2, zip them both off. It's pretty handy to have wires ganged together like that for running them in tight spaces.
  15. Much ado about nothing... A 3" neck pocket is fairly standard. I wouldn't expect any stability problems with 3". It'll work fine as far as I'm concerned. Having said that... From a design standpoint. I like the look of the 4" picture. Sure, it may restrict some of the upper fret access, but visually, I think that it looks more ballanced. Given the fact that the bridge position is also going to have to move an inch lower, there's not going to be any change in the pickup location relative to the bridge either, so the tone is not going to change.
  16. +1 to that. Drill first to make sure that the control plate is in the right place. 1/4" should be enough left over to push most pots and switches through. The 5 position Strat-type switches like the wood to be a tad thinner.
  17. Interesting idea. It may not be worth it to some of you guys. If someone wanted to have the wiring done for them though, this would solve 90% of their problems. There are tons of "how do I wire this?" threads on here. It's tempting to make a competitive product with all the cheaper parts and state "there's no mojo in aged parts. Buy this to simplify your guitar build or rewire job."
  18. It's not too late ya know. This made my day to see that. I can't decide who to cast my own vote for. I know the Odd Boy is... odd... and it's plays really well. It's actually set up better than my other guitars. It shreads. The Buckeye custom is just so unique that I'm more tempted to vote for it. I can't decide! Oh, Perry, I did get those pickguard screws installed. I managed to bum a few freebies from the local guitar shop to finish it. It's a bit late to show them now, but you can see them in this grainy picture on my site... http://home.hiwaay.net/~jehle/photos4.htm
  19. I would suggest downloading one for your computer instead. Play around with more samples and do pretty much the same thing. Check out harmonycentral.com in their software section. Also google for little drummer boy, or "LDB". It's free and kinda fun to play around with.
  20. I'm starting to see a certain style associated with all of your guitars. They have your mark on them. Awesome work! Love the black guitar where you can see the grain.
  21. Oh yes, the Fat Boy. I actually was going to put that in there instead of Gretsch. I still have lusty thoughts about that guitar. marksound, I love the idea of a big J branded on there. That's a hoot! It also just has to be Orange. In my mind, that's the color that it has to be. Although... the Fat Boy was Red. Hmmmmmm. I am surprised at the results of the poll so far. Keep the votes coming in. I use it to decide what to do by the end of the month. THANKS!
  22. I have about five different projects that I could work on. I've got it narrowed down to these two. I've always wanted one of those big fat orange Gretsch guitars with the sproingy Bigsby and Filtertrons. I'm a fan of Chet Atkins, Duanne Eddy, Brian Setzer, and a few other people that you associate with that kind of guitar. I've also wanted to get back into some whammy playing. Out of 11 guitars, I have only one with a standard trem (and even it's blocked so it won't move). So, if you where me. What would you rather build and why? Thanks for your help!
  23. Parallel! Now you tell me! That's actually easier. So I'll trademark the series version for myself.
  24. and thank YOU Brian for making it possible for us to create such a diverse databse of infomation for newbies and pros alike! ~~ Slain Angel ~~ ← Ditto that. I wouldn't be where I am today without this site. Brian made the site, put up with my newbie questions, and now I'm an old timer (member 47!). I've made a lot of good friends here too. Drinks all around! Hooray!
