  1. Don,t be afraid of using oak for a guitar.Have made a Bass and an SG.Oak is tough to work but is underated as a tone wood.
  2. #1 Doing crown moulding;paint grade so shooting tips with 1 1/4 with my paslode.Forget glue and have to run to truck for glue.Workmate is shooting baseboard and puts 2 1/2 in and replaces gun exactly as I left it.Grab corners of miter and pull trigger. No blood until finger is removed from the nail #2 Talking to the homeowner while drilling handles in his new kitchen. He looks at me and says:you just drilled through your finger didn,t you. Said yes and turned the drill to reverse I can play wicked Sabbath
  3. I would probably use my old Stanley plane more but someone cut the cord off
  4. Believe it was tounge in cheek.Everybody knows it is the silica in cheap sandpaper the gives that LP sound.Strats you have to use carborundum.Cheers.Nothing to do with bandsaws
  5. I do like the satisfaction of a good curl with a dangerously sharp handplane.I have some wooden bodied planes and some older Stanleys from micro to joiner and are nice to use because you don't need ear protection.I also have a 16 inch surface;a nice old beaver jointer and a hand held Makita with carbides. When it comes to planing I seem to put on the headphones a lot
  6. I have the same Porter Cable router as Mattia.Came with a fixed and plunge base. The plunge stays out as my freehand and the fixed is mounted in a table. The plunge is ok but a little sticky and best used with the depthstops. It comes with a vaccum base that actually works. The fixed base is a real treat because they give you a shaft wrench that if you drill into your table allows you to unlock the baselock and fine tune the height from above the table. This is an incredibly handy feature and not sure if others have it.The body of the router is very powerful and the circlipped collet assembly are absolutely wonderful.Has softstart and variable speed. Also seems to run cool after prolonged load.Tried a Hitatchi and it runs a little hotter but still has good power.Could be a Hitatchi trait because my Star wars Hitatchi cordless drill gets troublingly warm.Wouldn,t trade my PC for any router
  7. I personally love Vintage guitars but am not to keen on Vantage guitars. It is strange that you can find some surprising necks on cheapo guitars.Nothing really against vantage guitars though.Had 2 of them and they weren't terrible
  8. Looks like your gonna have a happy 8 year old.
  9. This is just another progress picture.Has been level sanded after 10 coats of nitro.Tuners are Wilkinson double lock tuners .Pickups are GFS pearl in gold case P90's.Bridge is solid brass also from GFS.Pickups should arrive any day now.I now have all the parts for my blue Tele and should be complete by the end of the weekend.Walnut one goes back to the spraybooth for another round of coats
  10. Please if you will, don,t use the word retarded flippantly. Thanks Rich .Sorry about the theft Mr Hiscock we will be ever vigilant
  11. is it just the pictures or are the lower bouts a little angular?Pics make it look a little notchy.Love the shape.
  12. Wicked enthusiam but the mods are gonna get ya.Way too many pics .
  13. I have yet to find a 1/4 " bit that will take any kind of load unless you want to make 1/4" increments.Even aftrer that if you try and rout past 3/4 inch the bit will chatter and break. If routing a body I would use the biggest bit available.3/4" or larger.Cavities are different and should only be finished with a router after being roughed out with a forstner bit
  14. I prefer bone for workability.I can get oversize blanks for about $2 on ebay.Have tried corian and works good for large nuts like an LP but seems too brittle for the skinny little Strat nuts.Just cleared out our shop and the samples for another solid surface company called Acriflek were in the garbage so I grabbed them all.Nuts to match any funky paintjob.Seems more forgiving and less brittle than Corian.Still probably stick with bone
  15. That is some beautiful lumber. How thick is the maple cap?
  16. Another sucker takes the bait.Get used to spending almost every waking hour of free time working on or thinking about working on guitars. It starts harmlessly by rebuilding a guitar and leads to buying specialty tools and expensive lumber. You will probably use a spray can on this one and maybe the next but then it will be a compressor and an HVLP gun and filters and dyes and micro mesh.Welcome to the fold brother.Kiss your girlfriend goodbye and slap the bugger that gave you that guitar. You will soon be one of us.BWAHAAHAA
  17. Yes it was dyed black and sanded back. Both were water based(first time I used them). It came out a little darker than I expected but very happy with the result..I sanded through on the back but touching up was easy and very forgiving.Seems a lot easier to use than tinted lacquer .The only problem was the back(oak)turned a little bit green but as a happy accident looks even better. The edge grain of the maple cap almost looks like binding.I almost bound this body but am glad I didn't.Lotsa learning yet.
  18. Just some progress pics.Waiting on the cover for the neck pickup.Still have to wire everything up but am almost done..Walnut Tele is on it,s 6th coat and has been level sanded.
  19. 41 years old and if I shave off my beard still get asked for ID at the beer store.I f they do ask I just remove my hat and they say sorry old man.Battered body from being a carpenter for 23 years and being a reckless kid my entire life.Bad knees from motox racing and snowboarding and the rest of my body is bad from saying watch this or i bet I can.Slowing down now so that maybe that in retirement I will have enough left to crawl out of the golf cart to whack the ball.I have had a big old probably shouldn't have done that life
  20. Open the chuck all the way and remove the screw inside. Then tighten an allen key with the long end in the chuck.Whack the allen key with a hammer and the chuck will spin right off.
  21. Is this something that has just happened? Also have you had this guitar for a while.?I,m guessing it is the strings if it is a new problem or you have changed guages and could be the nut.No guitar loses intonation that badly for no good reason. If you don,t know how I would take it for a set up
  22. Hey there.Never heard of A&M.Is this your place?Love to hear more about what you have. The drive towards lovely Niagara is always welcomed. One of my best friends Jon was born and raised in Grimsby
  23. Always looking forward to meeting fellow builders.PM me if you are heading my way.I have been fortunate enough to have acces to a reasonable supply of wood;either recycled, found or happened upon. The only wood I have bought yet is the maple cap for my somewhat Thinline Tele.Pictures are under the Walnut Tele in the in progress forum.Exotic Woods in Burlington is a great place to hang out for a couple of hours. You can walk around without being bothered and have a good selection of back and sides for acoustics and some pretty cool lumber.
