  1. It might be possible with active electronics. For example, if you have a dummy coil that has one tenth the windings of your pickup, mix the noise that it produces with the pickup signal using a summing amplifier (a simple mixer) that has 10 times the gain on the dummy coil input to balance the pickup's noise. And since the dummy coil wouldn't be connected in series with your pickup coil (like a typical humbucker is) it wouldn't affect the pickup's signal (wouldn't lose any highs). The inconvenience is having an active circuit.
  2. Ideally, to be fully humbucking, both coils should be identical, but DiMarzio have some asymmetrically wound humbuckers like the FRED where the two coils have different resistances. And a dummy coil wouldn't need a magnet because its purpose is to pick up stray electromagnetic noise. The only purpose a magnet has is to have the string move through it to induce a current in the coil.
  3. Check your hardware store/renovation center. They might have some mirrored acrylic in the plexi-glass section.
  4. Actually, that sounds like a great idea! I don't know if it would have enough power to get the string vibrating to sustain the feedback but it would be worth a try.
  5. I have a feeling it isn't quite clear yet. When we talk about "filling the holes with dowels", we're not talking about filling the gaps between the neck and the body. We're talking about filling the wrongly placed screw holes and re-drilling them in the right place. 1. Find some dowels that are just slightly bigger diameter than the present screwholes in the neck. 2. Use a drill bit of the size of the dowel to enlarge the present holes to receive the dowels. 3. Glue the dowels into the newly enlarged holes leaving them stick out just slightly. 4. After the glue has dried, sand the dowels down level to the wood of the neck. 5. Drill the new holes at the right places. Disclaimer: Maybe Wes or some of the other experienced builders could confirm or correct the above procedure that I have nevertheless used successfully, or add any missing details.
  6. So in order to be able to quickly switch between "1.Full Trem Mode" and "3.Dive-Only Mode", the Deep-C would have to have thumbscrews.
  7. Am I mistaken or does the Deep-C allow you to switch between full-lock and dive-only? I thought the idea was to be able to instantly switch between dive-only and full-float. That way, you could have the stability of dive-only with the constant availability of diving, and you could unlock the free-floating only when required. I don't know about other guitarists, but that seems like the most practical option to me.
  8. I like his incredibly original style but I'm not extremely fond of his compositions. Most of his playing that I like is on other people's material. The first time I heard him was on a Soft Machine album called Bundles and it blew me away. I also like the stuff he did with Bill Bruford and his solos in the group U.K. which is the only band that I saw him play live with.
  9. I like it. It brings me back to the 70's when I was into progressive rock in the early days of Genesis, Pentangle, Van Der Graff Generator (though that was more my older brother's influence), and such. I can't really pin it down though since my memory of those years is a bit cloudy... if you know what I mean. P.S. Don't you just hate it when someone listens to your original music and says something like, "Pretty good, it sounds just like (insert band name here)."
  10. Now that's a band I'd love to see.
  11. Well I guess there's no accounting for taste. I applaud you for having the courage to share your musical preferences with us.
  12. The first half of the DiMeola concert that I saw was acoustic. The second half was electric. I really enjoyed the acoustic part but I felt that the electric half was a bit of a let down. I guess there's no accountng for taste.
  13. I regret having missed that "Meeting of the Spirits" tour. However I was fortunate enough to have seen them all individually. In fact, Paco played the second part of a three part concert at the Montreal jazz fest where the McLaughlin Trio was the closing act (Milton Nascimento opened the show). Needless to say, Paco was amazingly inspiring with his 7 musicians including a Flamenco dancer. I'm not a fan of Flamenco dancing but he was incredible and most of the audience certainly agreed.

You can as long as you measure continuity between the first and last strips. However, even this doesn't guarantee that the continuity will still be there several years from now. Using a single piece guarantees it.
  15. I guess that depends on what model you have but I know what you mean. The logo on my 10-year-old 540SLTD would get a bit scratched off every time I changed strings. I just ended up scraping the whole thing off... and unusually easily to say the least.
  16. You're allowed to your opinion but that's all it is... your OPINION. I have the CD and just listened to the tune. It's not out of tune. He used some kind of effect, maybe a ring modulator, probably to tribute Hendrix's imperfect "out-of-tune" style. I feel a lot of emotional intensity in that solo but that's just my opinion.
  17. That makes a lot more sense to me. I might buy something like that, but I would never buy one that totally locks the trem. In fact, my present trem is blocked for dive-only. That "accessory" would allow me to have it floating for the few instances that I desire it to be.
  18. It's impossible to answer who's the best, but it's possible to answer who's your favorite, which is what this thread is about, isn't it?
  19. I totally disagree but that is totally subjective anyway. BTW, I think DiMeola has more speed and less technique. Having followed both careers and having seen them both perform more than once, I would have to reverse the two names in everything you wrote about them. But then again it's all subjective and I would never dare trying to state that as fact. BTW, I was actually dozing off during the Electric half of one of DiMeola's concerts and thought there was something wrong with me until I looked around and saw several other people slouched low in their seats. That never happened at a McLaughlin concert.
  20. My favorite of all time is John McLaughlin.
  21. You can also use the 4052 and 4053 multiplexer/demultiplexer chips depending on how you want to route and switch your signals.
  22. An alkaline cell generates 1.5V. A 9V alkaline battery is actually made up of six 1.5V cells in series. A nickel cadmium (and similar rechargeable) cell stores 1.2V. So six of these in series gives you 7.2V. Break open the plastic casing of a 9V NiCad one day. You'll find six little cells tack-welded together.
  23. Great job! Truly divine. Will red brass tarnish over time?
  24. So the bottlenecking will not be an issue. Good choice because I heard of people having latency problems with the USB ones.
